[EA] Improving Framerate in Grounded 2 feat. Lossless Scaling
By Joy
Grounded 2's early access is currently in an unfortunate state of unoptimisation. The main causes mainly are the use of Lumen Software Ray Tracing in UE5 and the lack of effective upscaling and most of all: Lack of Optimisation of assets at this time.

This guide goes step by step explaining setting up Lossless Scaling for use with Grounded 2, allowing you to achieve high framerates while being able to enjoy the gorgeous scenery of Brookhollow Park

This Guide was written with 1440P in mind however settings and preferences can easily be adapted to suit 1080p and 4K, I will explain how in the guide.

1. What is Lossless Scaling
So what is Lossless Scaling?

Lossless Scaling is a £5 app on Steam that's soul purpose is upscaling lower resolutions in order to improve framerates while using various methods to preserve the quality of the image. The app offers its own inbuilt methods alongside various other techniques including AMD's FSR and Nvidia Image Scaling to name a couple.

One other recent addition is the Open Source Frame Generation which allows games and cards that don't support Frame Gen Technologies to utilize them, this is something we will be using in this guide for Grounded 2.

The App can be found on the Steam Store at the Following Link, it's around £5 or $7 at the time of publication (August 2025)

Below here is a more extended explanation of the Technology and how the app's Frame Gen works in comparison to the flagship techs from NVIDIA and AMD

2. Configuration for Grounded 2
So, how do we set this up for Grounded 2?
I'll keep the beginning concice so those who are looking for tested settings that work are able to quickly access them and continue to enjoy the game. For those looking for more detail, I'll explain down below why I went with specific options and how that translates into the game at 1440p.

My Choices: An Explanation

As a quick disclaimer, I'm still very new to Lossless Scaling so if these aren't the "absolute best", do forgive me, I am merely here to share what I've learned to help peeps enjoy games ^^

So, for a little bit more detail. In Lossless Scaling, I'm pairing LS1 Image Scaling with the latest LSFG 3.1 Frame Generation. The combination of the two inbuilt technologies in my experience have worked the best while providing a high quality output with minimal input lag. Of course with Frame Gen, there is always going to be a bit of input lag, but minimal is better than loads.

In my Frame Generation Settings, I've tailored it using the Fixed Mode rather than adaptive as ingame, I'm capping the framerate out at 165 which is the refresh rate of my monitor, marking that as my overall target that I want it to hit. This may not be perfect and may require playing around depending on your own Refresh Rate and system, I listed my own specifications in the Guide Description.

For the Flow Scale which is a slider that controls the trade off between Input Lag and Image Quality, I based my choice of 75% on my higher end GPU. When you hover over the option, the program will prompt you with some starting positions that you can pick from based on what kind of Graphics Card you are using.

I use WGC as my Capture Method as it's a lower latency capture specific to those running the latest version of Windows 11, so the choice there is based on your current operating system.

Lossless Scaling from what I read does also work on Linux but it'll be on a Distro by Distro basis and has also been tested on the Steam Deck which runs a customized built based on Arch.
3. In-Game Settings Setup
Windowed Mode is VITAL
Jumping into Grounded 2, we're going to need to make some adjustments to our ingame settings in order for Lossless Scaling to work with this game. The main thing being dropping the ingame resolution and also setting the game to Windowed or Windowed Fullscreen.

Lossless Scaling doesn't work with Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen modes so simply swap the game over to Windowed and let LS do the work scaling the game up to your native resolution, 2560x1440 in my case here.

4. Conclusion
That's it! Jump ingame, hit CTRL + SHIFT + S and play!

That's that from me! I hope this guide helps y'all out with improving the framerate in Grounded 2 while the devs work on improving the optimisation. It's a shame we are having to deal with this but given this is a new engine with new graphical technologies, I can understand where these issues came from, I'm optimistic Obsidian will get the game running better soon.

Hope this helps y'all out, any questions or ideas share them in the comments and if I find anything else out, I'll share them as edits to the guide. Happy Survivin!
