Introduction
While I am working on getting online functionality for the game, Steam Remote Play is a good way to play with others online. All you need is to have someone on your friends list and you can play together. You don't even need both players to own the game. The host is the only one who needs a copy of the game while the guest will have the game live stream to them. However, there are some steps required in order to get the game to detect the guest's controller as the game itself can't do it automatically.

These steps should help you set up for Remote Play if this your first time as well as use the new Refresh and Switch feature in Button Config.
How the game detects gamepads
When you boot up the game, the game detects if you have any controllers plugged in before the title screen. This data remains throughout the game, which is why you can unplug your gamepad anytime and it will still be detected when you plug it in again. This is important to know because you can't plug in another gamepad after the initial boot up. You will have to close the game and restart it to detect more gamepads. But the recent update has created an option to manually recheck gamepads.
Update to Button Config

In the Button Config menu, you will now notice new graphics in the upper left corner.

On the right side of the current player are four icons. When a gamepad is assigned upon boot up, each icon will light up along with a detection number. The detection number does not correlate to your position, it is code to the type of controller it detects. Underneath the current player are two new options: Refresh and Switch.

F5 - Refresh: When you want to check for further gamepads, press F5 and if it detects a new gamepad, it will light up the associated icon. You can also use this to refresh the slots by removing all gamepads and pressing F5. However, you must take note that gamepads are detected in a strict order. That means that if you plug in a new gamepad, the type of gamepad may dictate the player to a specific position. So if you plug in a gamepad with a detection number of 4 and another player has a gamepad with a detection number of 0, the gamepad assigned 0 may end up being player 1 regardless of when it was plugged in. That is why there is an option to switch these positions.

F6 - Switch: Pressing F6 will switch the player positions. A gamepad assigned to Player 1 will switch with Player 2 and vice versa. At this time, only player 1 and 2 can switch due to I only having two gamepads to work with.
Setting up Steam Remote and guest gamepad
If you have never used Steam Remote Play, follow these instructions. Remember, the host is the one who runs the game and the guest is the one who will stream it.

  1. As the host, run the game.
  2. Press Shift + Tab to open the Steam Overlay. It should look like the image above.
  3. Find the Remote Play option on the bottom and invite a guest from your friend list.
  4. Have the guest accept the invitation. Their screen will start streaming the game after a moment.
  5. Once the stream has started on the guest side, close the Steam Overlay (your guest won't be able to play with it on).

Once you got everything running, Steam makes it default to have the guest plug in a controller. If you want them to use keyboard, you'll have to manually give them access to the keyboard. This guide assumes the guest is using a gamepad, but the game will not detect the gamepad automatically. That is why you should go to the Button Config menu and press F5. The game should detect the guests controller. Press F6 if you want to switch positions to make either one P1 or P2.

And that's about it. That should get you started with Steam Remote Play until a proprietary online experience has been added to the game.
