The police of Russia is the successor to centuries-old law enforcement traditions, beginning with the initiatives of Peter the Great, who established the first police service in St. Petersburg in 1718. Anton Devier became the first General Police Chief, and the primary tasks of the police included maintaining public order, fire safety, and combating crime. In the 18th century, the police expanded their operations to Moscow and other cities, with a structure that included district offices and quarter supervisors.
n the 19th century, the police became a key element of the state system, subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Specialized units were created, such as the detective police for criminal investigations. This period also saw the establishment of gendarmerie units for political oversight.
During the Soviet period, the police were transformed into the militsiya, which operated from 1917 to 2011. However, as part of the modernization of the law enforcement system, the Federal Law "On Police" was adopted in 2011, restoring the historical name and strengthening its role in protecting citizens' rights, combating crime, and ensuring public safety. The modern Russian police force has approximately 900,000 employees and includes units such as patrol service, traffic police, and transport police.
Today, the Russian police continue to evolve, combining tradition with modern technology to effectively fulfill their duties.
