Best party setups?
These are the setups I think would work the best for certain playstyles. I haven't seen a few of the characters in action yet, so I'm not sure what their attacks are like (namely Arbor, Bean, and Morton) but if it turns out that I'm wrong about them I'll edit my recommendations.

Once you have your party locked in, don't worry if it turns out worse than you'd hoped - there's another chance to swap out who you have recruited once you get to Palchumville/Noville later and can access the Inn.

Full Aggro:
If you want to play full aggro (like me) then I find it works pretty well to go to Rudy to get the Lemon Pie Of The Undead and go to Grin to get the Stick With Extra Length, then recruit Phoney and Scroobert.
(If you didn't beat Phoney's quest, you can recruit Rudy or one of the characters I haven't tried out based on their attack descriptions.)

Phoney - Stick With Extra Length
Scroobert - Lemon Pie of the Undead
Self - Coin

You can also swap out anyone's item for A Cool Hat from Morton (but I'd keep Scroobert's item the same, having a free recharge for I'm A Staw at the start of combat is what makes him viable for full aggro).

Healing:
If you're more one for the healing playstyle, my recommendations are more for items than characters. You should definitely recruit Toot with either the Lemon Pie Of The Undead (from Rudy) or the Timmy Quick Figurine (from Bean) to get the most use out of his Cheers ability.
Using Phoney or Cauldron could be helpful (one random buff can be healing) but both are limited to RNG and their special attack cooldowns.

Toot - Lemon Pie of the Undead/Timmy Quick Figurine
Other useful items: Severed Tongue (Phoney), Glass of Water (given by Toot earlier), {Concoction} (Cauldron), Sarah's Running Shoes (France)

Challenge:
If you want more of a challenge, I'd recruit Dejo Bravisa (given Rudy's item to maximise the number of times you can try out their special attack) and Lloyd or Grin (Lloyd's challenge is typing based and Grin's challenge is timing based) or one of the characters I haven't tried out based on their attack descriptions.
You could head to Toot first to gather his Flask Of Unlimited Apple Juice if you'd want an extra reason/reward to go for perfect blocks in combat.

Dejo Bravisa - Lemon Pie of the Undead
Lloyd? Grin? - Flask of Unlimited Apple Juice

Thanks for reading, let me know if there's better recommendations to be made for party setups. (Especially with the random items you get along the way - I haven't checked out many of their applications very much)
Oh, and let me know if I've miswritten any of the character stats. Wouldn't want to have those wrong
