Skill Overview

Surge
Exclusive to Normal Mode, Surge unlocks the attack with the highest damage output in the kit.
  • Deals no damage
  • Takes roughly 0.25 seconds to activate.
  • Immobilized during activation. Dash disabled during activation.
  • Requires 100 MP to activate.
  • Upon activation, drains 20 MP/s until MP hits 0 (Lasts 5 seconds after activation)
  • While active, disables the usage of Charge and Heavy Attack (trying to Heavy Attack does Light Attack, instead)

In general, it is best to use Surge only when it will grant at least half its total use. This varies by exact fight, but if Surge is popped right as a boss goes intangible, the time spent stuck in Surge unable to Charge won't be turned into a second Surge.

Notable Exceptions to this rule:
- Denial: Downtime phases tend to last 15 seconds or more, so there is enough time to pop Surge and get it all back (depending on the path taken when resolving Realization).
- Bargaining: Any damage done to the main boss is essentially double damage. It is better to put damage on the boss before it splits than it is to hold Surge until both adds are grouped.
- Depression: There is a pixel perfect spot to stand outside + intercardinal to hit Surge Light Attacks, even when telegraphs seemingly put You out of Light Attack range.
- Grief: If Surge is active when phasing (the end of Phase 1 Cutscene), Surge will immediately end and MP set to 100 at the beginning of Phase 2. There are also two attacks in Phase 1 with more than 20 seconds of downtime, so Surge should be spent if possible.

Light Attack (Surge)
During Surge, Light Attack's damage is increased by 50% and attack speed by 70%. However, movement while attacking is disabled during Surge.
  • 75 damage
  • Roughly 6.8 attacks per second (~510 DPS)
  • Does not consume nor generate MP
  • Immobilizes player while attacking, but Dash can be used at any time.
  • Only usable during Surge.

If either attack button is held from the beginning of Surge, 34 Light Attacks will be delivered, for a total of 2550 damage over 5.25 seconds including Surge activation (~485 DPS)

Heavy Attack
  • 400 damage
  • Generates 20 MP per target hit. (100 MP in 7.5 seconds)
  • roughly 0.67 attacks per second (~267 DPS)
  • One full second of startup.
  • Heavy, ramping slow during startup.
  • Immobilizes the player upon activation.
  • Can dash at any time, including immediately after hitting.
Heavy Attack > Dash is useful for squeezing extra damage while in an enemy's telegraph. Poor timing can either result in missing the attack (Dashing too early) or dying (Dashing too late).
Heavy Attack can be initiated while walking in from out of range, or right before a boss reappears.

Heavy Attacks are the highest DPS MP generators. Additionally, they are the fastest option to fill the MP bar. This makes chaining Heavy Attacks into Surge the focus of boss optimization.
Any time spent standing still should be spent charging a Heavy Attack.

Heavy Attacks are longer range than Light Attacks both in and out of Surge. Use the arrow indicators shown when aiming attacks to find max melee range for Light and Heavy attacks. If you are sure to enter Surge immediately upon gaining the MP, then stay in range for Light Attacks.

Light Attack
Use when Heavy Attack's limited movement, even coupled with dash, would result in death.
  • 50 damage
  • Generates 3 MP per target hit. (100 MP in ~8.33 seconds)
  • Roughly 4 attacks per second (~200 DPS)
  • Does not affect movement speed; can be canceled into Dash.

It is not a substantial damage loss to use Light Attacks except when it loses part of or a complete usage of Surge. Sometimes, the only way to hit the boss before it leaves is with one or two light attacks.
It is better to use a Light Attack than it is to miss a Heavy Attack or to interrupt one by dashing!

Charge
  • Deals no damage
  • Generates 10 MP/s (100 MP in 10 seconds)
  • Immobilizes while active; prevents Dash while active.
Use this while forced far away from the boss or while the boss is off-screen. Using Charge during forced downtime usually grants an entire extra usage of Surge, a substantial damage increase).
