IN VAIN Scenario Walkthrough

A complete walkthrough on the IN VAIN scenario I made for Keen's fieldwork scientific bunker competition. This will show you how to complete the scenario as well as reveal all the secrets

This guide completely spoils the Scenario; it is recommended only for those who are stuck or want to check for secrets they may have missed.

Spawn
There's nothing to interact with here besides the elevator further forward; make sure to take a look at the text beside the door.
The platform to the left is for show and can not be reached.

Secrets
  • There is a door at the bottom of the tower that you can jump down to; this is an alternative path to the elevator entry.
Logistics
After going down the entry elevator, there will be a room to your left, and going into this room will activate the first medical room for respawns. There is also a small amount of loot in the cargo containers. The next section is down the hallway, where you find the platform lift. If you fall below the lift, there is no way up; press backspace to respawn in logistics.

Secrets
  • Log 1 can be found on the dead body next to the medical room
  • The red spotlight periodically looks at you, and on rare occasions, turns on
Cargo
Once down the platform lift, you will need to find a way past the gate.
To do this, you will first need to retrieve the components from the cargo containers and use them to repair the seat of the vehicle. After that, use the vehicle to move the cargo crate in the corner of the room out of the way and interact with the reveal button.


Secrets
  • Next to the button, there is a dead body with Log 2 on it
Cargo Entry
This is the main cargo room, the large cargo containers either have nothing or ores and nothing of use.
The small cargo crates have components, rockets and a rocket launcher.

Use the rocker launcher to break the barrier and take the tunnel. Some parts of the tunnel are too small to go through regularly, and you will need to crouch.


Secrets
  • Log 3 can be found next to the stack of barrels by the gate.
Experimental Entry
After making it out of the tunnel, there will be an airlock with a button in it; interacting with the button will lead to the next area.


Secrets
  • The tunnel splits in two, one goes to the main area, and the other goes to the balcony above. There are small crates with an MR-30 elite rifle
Experimental
Once entering, there will be an exposition and a message to build the lore, and you will see a room on your right that has a medical room and crates with weapons.
There is a garage with a defence drone in it, and it should only take one rocket to destroy.
There are two trucks in the garage, one that can be driven out and one that needs to be repaired first, but has a gun; materials to repair the armed truck are found in the small crates before the experimental room.

At the end of the hallway, there is a one-way airlock to the next section. Interact with the button to continue.

Secrets
  • Near the medical room, you can find Log 4 that explains why the station is at a slope and further lore.
  • In room O2EB, you can find Evaluation 23 that explains how and why VAIN came to be
Main
Welcome to Main, this connects experiment, power and command. To make it to the next section, you need to get past the command door, but it is locked due to the main power being down.
There is also a medical room by the floodlights for refills.
If you brought a truck, then you will be blocked by the hangar doors. The button to open the doors is in the control tower to the left of the hangar doors.

Once past the hangar doors, there are cargo crates with ammo and components in them, and some of the sealed ones can be opened using your grinder.
On the opposite side of the room, you will find the airlock to power.

Secrets
  • In the green sealed cargo container, there is a dead body with a survivor's notes
  • Log 5 can be found on the dead engineers by the Hangar doors.

  • The refinery leads up to doors that open to a balcony with a spare truck that can be used for spare parts.
Ice Mine
To turn the reactor on, you first need to turn the coolant system on. In the ice caves, there is an armed drone that takes 2 - 4 rockets to disable.

To turn the coolant system on, you need to interact with the button on top of the ice ramp to the right of entry.


Secrets
  • Log 6 can be found under the ice ramp.
Bridge
The bridge leads to the reactor room, there is a turret on the other side of the bridge that needs to be taken out befor you corss, to cross you will need to place some armour blocks to repair the bridge and if you fall there is a ladder on the at the base of the bridge to get back up.
Reactor room
Once in the reactor room, you will be greeted by an interior turret. Once destroyed, go to the left and up the balcony and press the button found to unlock the reactor doors and go into the reactor and turn it on. Once on, the command gate in Main will open.

  • There is a room in the barrel stack on the balcony
Command
This is just a connection point for the Caves and Data. You'll notice you can't enter Data; instead, you will have to go into the caves to open Data.
There are also cargo crates with weapons inside them by the medical bay

  • There is a dead body by the medical bay with Log 7
Caves Entry
When entering, there will be a turret at the back of the tunnel.
After you'll see a corner where the path is blocked by hangar doors, to open to doors, there's a button in the room to the right of the doors. Below the button, there are weapon lockers with armaments inside.

Past the doors, there's an elevator that leads to the caves.
Caves
Once down the elevator, you'll see a room to the right, which has a survival kit that doesn't work all the time, so check to see if it's on. There is also a button in the room that opens the doors across the bridge.
To the left of the bridge there is a turret that needs to be shot. Below the turret is a ladder if you fall off the bridge, and there's a door behind the turret.

Once in the main cave, you will be confronted by a turret down to the left.

You'll have to work your way down to the button at the bottom of the cave and interact with it, but be careful, the green river will damage you. After this, you can go back up to the Data storage entry.

Data (Boss fight)
Welcome to Data entry, this is the prop room before the boss battle. Make sure to top up on health and grab some weapons and ammo, but not all of them. If you bring all the ammo into the fight and die, there will be none when you respawn, and death is a very likely outcome.
Getting close to the gate will automatically open it. Now is a good time to tell you to shoot everything red; the boss fight will only progress if the red blocks have been damaged enough.
In room 1, you'll see an interior turret. Once this is disabled, the walls on either side of you will drop, revealing another 2 interior turrets that also need to be disabled. Once all 3 turrets are disabled, the gate at the back of the room will open and allow you to progress.

You will find a hallway, and around the corner is an artillery turret, this is to stop vehicles, and characters can walk right past it, this turret does not need to be destroyed.
Behind the turret is a hole that leads to the final area of the boss fight

Once down, you have only a few seconds to act. There is a rocket turret that will turn to shoot you; shoot it first. Once the rocket turret is down, the wall to the right will drop, and a gatling turret will start to shoot at you, make sure to stay in cover and shoot it back. Once the gatling gun is down the wall to the right will drop behind this wall are some gyroscops you need to shoot, There is no immediate threat; this is to give you some breathing room. Once the gyroscopes are destroyed, the wall at the back will drop, revealing 2 assault cannon turrets, the one on the left will take one rocket to kill, and the one on the right will take 1 shot. Once both turrets are down, the final wall revealing VAIN will drop and shooting VAIN in the face will complete the scenario.
