VIDEO GUIDE

An animated and comfortably subtitled video guide containing all the information that the chapters below (except for "NOTES") contain as well.
I. SETUP
First and foremost, purchase and download Blood: Fresh Supply.

Once that's done, download BuildLauncher[github.com].
It is a light-weight and super handy launcher for Build games with its own source port & mod manager. The simplest way to go about it, really.

In its Ports menu, download NotBlood with a single click.

Then, in the Blood panel, click on the Downloads tab and filter for "Mods". Look around and see if any of these raise your interests, most of them are quality of life and make the game a better experience.

If you intend to use SmoothBlood, make sure in the Mods tab that only one of its variants are active.

With all this done, launch Blood with NotBlood in the Campaigns tab.
II. CONFIG
If you do not wish to set these up manually, you can download my pre-set up config files here[www.lucasgold.hu].

NotBlood offers a variety of customization options and quality of life settings.

When you first launch NotBlood, click on the NotBlood default settings option.

[Options ➡ Game Setup ➡ Auto Aim: Hitscan Only]
I recommend keeping hitscan only auto aim on for 3 reasons:
1. Auto aim does not diminish skill as it is circumstantial (yet not too specific)
2. It allows the fast-paced combat approaches to feel way smoother and better
3. Having projectiles be affected by it can cause frustration

[Options ➡ Display Setup ➡ Crosshair: ON (Auto Aim)]
There is a handy crosshair setting for auto aim as well.

[Options ➡ Game Setup ➡ Fast Weapon Switch]
[Options ➡ Game Setup ➡ Autosave Trigger: Keys + New Level]
I also recommend the Fast Weapon Switch option for a more fluid weapon selection, and letting the game save with every key pickup and new level entry.

[Options ➡ Mutators]
NotBlood has plenty of mutators to customize the game.
I encourage you to experiment with these,
however I want to highlight a few that I would recommend.

[Replace Akimbo With 4X Damage: ON] + [Weapon Behavior: NotBlood]
Both options work well in many cases, however
the Quad Damage from Quake rules in my book.

[Random Cultist TNT: ON]
For extra surprises.

[Hitscan Projectiles: FAST]
Turning hitscan attacks into projectiles
gives way to rewarding masterful movement.

[Gore Behavior: Extra Blood]
Speaks for itself. Makes blood stay longer,
and also spawns more guts and gibs.

Here is the full list of mutator settings that I recommend.
Experiment, observe, and find what works for you the best.

I also recommend a set of key bindings that allow for a smooth experience
in movement, weapon selection and pacing.

This might seem cryptic at first glance, but it is a game changer.
III. PLAYSTYLES
[New Game ➡ Episodes ➡ Difficulty]

This guide relies on the Extra Crispy difficulty.

However, I encourage you to take a peek
at the custom difficulty options.

Blood’s combat revolves around 2 approaches:
TACTICAL and CHAOTIC.
Both playstyles should be used as together they give advantages in any situation.

TIPS FOR TACTICAL

Being TACTICAL means to take it slow, observe, use cover, and attack with caution.

It is crucial if the opposition has an advantage over you, or when you don’t know a map well enough just yet.

For a start, TNT and its variants can be tossed around corners to clear paths and surprise your foes.

You can place proxy mines, too, which detonate near enemies and can also be shot.

You can use Beast Vision, too, which lets you see enemies nearby.

The Cloak of Invisibility speaks for itself. Pretty handy.

TIPS FOR CHAOTIC

Being CHAOTIC means mobility, dexterity, recklessness and rushing into encounters.

It requires quick thinking and in-depth understanding of your weapons, foes, and surroundings.

Keep hearts in mind. The enemies drop them frequently, and they are good refreshments.

Also, the many Power Ups can aid you well, especially when their powers are combined.

Mastering the balance between TACTICAL and CHAOTIC is key to succeed.

To get the most out of them, however, you ought to know your guns.
IV. ARSENAL
Your arsenal and your understanding of them are another one of the most important and fun aspects of Blood.

Each weapon, item, and power up is different but familiar enough so that they work exceptionally well together.

Going through each weapon, I would like to give some tips and show how you can combine them effectively. Variety is the spice of life – and death – after all.

Switching between weapons fast can also be useful.
Holstering accelerates the process more, so holster
before switching weapons if you want it to be even faster.

Holstering also cancels certain animations, thus allowing some tricks not possible without it.

Pitchfork

The pitchfork is your starting weapon in Blood.

Alone, it is weak. You can, however, charge it up with your alternative attack.

During Quad Damage, you can charge up an explosive fireball with you alt. attack as well.

Flare Gun

The Flare Gun shoots flares that burn enemies over time.

DON’T SPAM IT like a pistol! Usually, 2-4 flares can burn regular foes to death.

You can either wait the burn time out or shoot 1-2 flares and combine
the Flare Gun with other weaponry to accelerate your foes’ demise.

Flares sometimes don't work, depending on
where and from how high / at what angle you shoot them from.

The Flare Gun’s alt. fire mode is also useful against
groups
or for blowing a fatal shot to a few unfortunate bastards.

Shotgun

The Shotgun has 2 fire modes: 1 shell per shot or 2 shells per shot.

The closer you are to your enemies, the better it is, and for that, I recommend using both barrelsunless you intend to stun your enemies, for which single shells should work.

During Quad Damage, the Shotgun becomes an Auto Shotgun.

You can also do this normally by quickly holstering itand taking it out again in between shots. Groovy.

Tommy Gun

The Tommy Gun can fire in a semi-straight line or in a wider range.

It is most useful for stunning cultists, as they cannot
shoot back
while they’re taking damage from the bullets.

Combining the Tommy Gun with the Shotgun is super handy and very often fatal.

During Quad Damage, it peels skin and flesh.
Even groovier.

TNT & variants

As mentioned before, TNT is useful around corners.

It is important to learn how to toss them effectively.
Observe and experiment until you get the hang of it.

TNT also explodes in your hand.

Distancing and movement are also important
when it comes to tossing TNT effectively.

Spray Can

The Spray Can, similarly to flares, takes time to work well.

Its alt. attack is especially useful for larger crowds.
Even more so when you combine it with explosives.

Napalm Launcher

The Napalm Launcher speaks for itself.

A powerful explosives launcher that also burns its victims to crisp.

Its alt. attack is devastating but gulps gasoline greedily.

Using it during Quad Damage might just be the grooviest.

Tesla Cannon

The Tesla Cannon is a rapid-fire energy weapon.
It delivers plentiful damage and can stun certain foes.

Its alt. attack releases a powerful, wide-spread charge. Truly shocking.

It is particularly useful against bosses and hellhounds.

Life Leech

The Life Leech is a magical staff that reeks of evil.

Effective against crowds and is an iconic weapon.

You can also turn it into a defensive turret with its alt. attack.

Voodoo Doll

And finally, the Voodoo Doll is a funny little prank on your enemies.
Looking at them, you can stab the Voodoo Doll to hurt your foes in the funny areas.
If you are not looking at anyone, however, it is a masochist’s dream toy.
Its alt. attack can also wipe out crowds with ease, but it uses all of the doll at once.

Blood’s arsenal gives way to a combat sandbox
– learning them and using them well is a lot of fun.

Shoot while only standing around, however, you’ll soon realize
that you need to keep on the move if you want to stay alive.
V. MOVEMENT
Movement in Blood is simple yet unique and has a feeling about it unlike anything else.

Getting good at it grants you an advantage over both your environment and the enemies.
Get a habit of crouching, jumping, and moving fast if needed.

While crouching, certain enemies have a harder time hitting you.
Try aligning the enemy to be in front of each other, too, so that they can't shoot you.

Crouching can also be used to dive under certain enemies and get behind them.

Jumping around is also important both in firefights and exploration in general.

It makes you harder to hit.
Diagonal movement is also preferable given the situation.

Circle around them well enough, especially around cultists,
and they’ll have a hard time hitting you even once.

You can also stomp on enemies and if they have little health,
you’ll stomp them to death rather quick.

Observe well enough, and you’ll find shortcuts,
sometimes entire level skip tricks.

The Jump Boots are your most valuable friend.
You can turn them ON and OFF anytime, so save their power.

You can also perform a TNT jump if you’re dirty like that.
It can be useful if you have no boots on you.

Also, know that you can spam the Use key (E) to get the Hand off yourself.
... you knew that, right?
VI. SAVE & EXPERIMENT!
Blood can be a difficult game.

That said, with the tips I gave you, it is only a matter of practice to get good.

Saving often some might call cheap, but I’ve found it to be
one of the best ways to learn quickly and find optimal solutions.

Remember the custom difficulty and the mutators as well,
and experiment with them to find the right balance and ideal circumstances.

In BuildLauncher, you can also find many custom maps and episodes,
which are a lot of fun and are made by numerous talented creative people.

If you can, also try out multiplayer as well,
as it gives a whole new dimension to the game.

NOTES
The soundfont used in the video is the ColomboGMGS2 SoundFont.
I recommend it as it is a very high quality soundfont.
You can get it here[musical-artifacts.com].

I also recommend VirtualMIDISynth as it lets you customize
your MIDI experience and is a simple but powerful tool.
You can get it here[coolsoft.altervista.org].

Note that the multiplayer footage in Chapter VI. was captured in Blood: Fresh Supply
- that is because I do not have any multiplayer footage in NotBlood just yet.

NotBlood however also has some multiplayer enhancements, such as
improved spawning location, spawn protection, colored names in chat,
multi kill alerts etc.

A few exra tips:
  • If you time it just right, you can shoot cultists' TNT, exploding them right in their faces.
  • Try not to get caught in closing doors, cabinets, and really tight gaps - they often kill you without mercy.
  • If the key bindings are too unfamiliar territory, you can also use a Weapon Wheel (key '5' in my config) to switch between weapons.
  • Also in my config, I have HUD messages disabled as there are messages every time you save and holster your weapon. Certain maps do use messages to tell stories (e.g.: Death Wish), so think about turning Messages back on or use the Console to read messages you're missing out on.
  • The Voodoo Doll's and Life Leech's alt. attack decimate the Stone Gargoyle. - @danin900 on YouTube
  • Fanatics (Tommy Gun wielding cultists) only ever flinch to the Shotgun and never to the Tommy Gun's alt. attack. - @danin900 on YouTube

If you haven't yet, I recommend checking out the video guide
- I intended it to be a cinematic and entertaining experience
beyond its also intended educational purpose.

@p_viridis In either NotBlood and RAZE flares should be much better than the original game - from my experience flares stick best in NotBlood except for a few circumstances like I mention at 10:57 in the video, but if you prefer RAZE, it should also be fine. :)

Regarding the projectile behavior option, many of my flares don't stick to the enemies on original, but is there any difference between the other options?
I know that with NotBlood option I still have issues with flares not hitting enemies that are behind bars from a distance. (E1M2 Shooting flares from staircase at the occultists within the ticket booth.)
Haven't experimented much with the Raze option yet.
Thanks

Thank you for the feedback! :)

And yes, I did encounter that before as well. I believe it has to do with saving, if you save mid-combat the health of every alive enemy resets and sometimes it might be bugged a bit, making it either seem that the enemy is invincible, or maybe they actually end up that way?

Maybe one should open a GitHub issue ticket about this.

amazing guide thanks a lot

but is anyone encountering an issue where stone gargoyles outside of the boss fight have an absolute obscene amount of health? there isnt even enough ammo in some of the levels to kill even one of them
