How To Unlock The Camera Tilt & Zoom Level
By Rheyan
The default camera in Len's Island is quite limited - it looks down on Len and prevents you from seeing very far in front of you. In this guide I'll show you how to install a mod that unlocks the camera giving you the freedom to tilt and zoom to your hearts content so that you can actually SEE this beautiful world!

Introduction & Video
Len's Island 1.0 is now released but the default camera that it comes with is extremely restrictive, giving an overhead view that does not allow you to see around you or very far ahead.

In this guide I'll show you how to install a mod that not only unlocks the camera allowing you to tilt freely and finally SEE this beautiful world, but also allows you to fully configure the three zoom levels.

If you prefer to watch rather than read, see the video below:

Mod Overview
The camera is unlocked via a mod found on Nexus Mods. Len's Island doesn't officially come with any modding support, however the game is built with the Unity Engine, and this is what allows it to be modded; it's also what makes it just slightly more complex than normal mods.

You're going to need to install two things - the mod itself, and a modding framework which the mod hooks into. Thankfully, there's no actual "installation" process here, all you need to do is download and unzip some files into your game directory.

Below is the link to the mod:

The BepInEx Framework
What is BepInEx?

The mod has one dependency - the BepInEx framework. This is what allows games built on the Unity Engine to be modded. It's been around since 2022, has several thousand GitHib stars and dozens of contributors.

Downloading the zip

You can download the latest release directly from GitHub[github.com], and there are versions for Linux, Mac & Windows. As a Steam user, you want to download the win_x64 version:

Installation

There's actually nothing to 'install' as such... just download the file into the Len's Island game directory which is inside your steam folder. Depending on where you installed Steam, the directory is likely to be something like this:

C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Len's Island

Unzip the files into the root of the Len's Island game directory and your files list should look something like this:

If you see the BepInEx directory in there, you're good to go.
Install the Mod
With BepInEx installed you can now install the mod file itself. Just click "Manual Download" from the following link:

https://www.nexusmods.com/lensisland/mods/1?tab=files

This file needs to go inside the BepInEx folder, NOT the root of the game directory!

  • The plugins folder contains a file called "BetterCameraControllerPlugin.dll"
  • The config folder contains a file called "com.TNutz.lensIsland.bettercamcontroller.cfg"

With those two files in place, run Len's Island. This will initialise everything for the first time and then you can configure things to your liking.
Configuration (Optional)
The mod comes with a configuration file that allows you to tweak things further. The config file should be found in (depending on your Steam installation) the following directory:

C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Len's Island\BepInEx

There are two things that can be configured - the zoom levels, and the camera tilt. The file itself contains comments that describe every setting better than I can really, so read those :-)

The tilt is where the magic happens! By default, the game doesn't let you tilt the camera upwards very much so you're always looking down at the ground and not in front of you. The game default is around -7.5, and the mod expands this to -30 but you can tweak it further.

Secondly, the game comes with three zoom modes. The default zoom and then a close and far camera. The mod allows you tweak the values at these three zoom levels. Just play around with the values, reload the game and see what works best for you.

Known Issues
For me, on version 1.0.1 of the game, the mod will just stop working after a time. I'll just find that I am no longer able to tilt freely. I don't know why it happens and I can't pinpoint what triggers it. Thankfully, a reload of the game fixes it. Hopefully the dev will continue working on the mod and fix it :-)

I just got back into my house and when I opened the chest, this is what happened:

The format is too large.

Thank you very much. I still have a slight hitch when I try to rotate the camera upwards, but the game is still enjoyable.
Hello from France.

I just tried this mod on version 1.0.3 and it did NOT work, at all.
I am not sure if BepInEx is not working, or the mod itself.

Won't work for me for some reason :( everything is copied where it's supposed to be but when I load the game the camera doesn't change.

Yeah please do let us know if it works on Steamdeck! and yeah I think the first commenter must have been confused!

I appreciate your guide here. I haven't tried the mod yet since I a on steamdeck and so far my experience with BepinEx and modding has been very fidgety. If/when I try I'll provide feedback so other deck users can see it.

I don't understand this other guy implying the devs ripped off a mod here. Apparently he's never actually played the game.

It's NOT in the base game. The devs have designed it as top-down, and for a very long time it wasn't even possible to orbit the camera in any way so the game definitely looks weird in places because the world was just never designed to be seen from these angles.
Phytonanos 23 Jun @ 12:22am
What are you talking about? When did they add tilt and zoom to the base game to this degree?

Wild that this became a feature the game has now... Did you get any credit for inspiring it? Or maybe proving that it was needed by providing a mod for the community and then getting recognition from the developer?
I see people steal ideas all too much and to see this game suddenly have this feature after the community created said mod, reeks of leech.
