DELTARUNE - jevil guide!!
By mj but halloweiner
WHATS UP GAMERS! this guide was originally supposed to be for EVERY secret boss within deltarune but i got a bit too lazy and mainly wrote out a guide for jevil and decided i'll just make the guides one-by-one. ANYWAYS this guide should be able to help you beat jevil, both weird and normal route :)

hello there deltaruners!! if you are currently in need of aid for the secret bosses of this game, i am here to help! i've never made a guide before, but i've decided today i will try :,)

some credentials i have of beating jevil (and just this game in general) are my hours in the game NOT ONLY ON PC (because as of writing this its at 30 hours LOL) -- but also on the nintendo switch! i'm also a huge enthusiast of this game, been here since before its first chapter released, and have replayed the game MANY times!

what to expect in this guide is how to get to jevil, what items you'll need, what moves occur in the fight and the best method to dodge them, etc.

let me remind you of something before you get into these fights...

DON'T GIVE UP!!!

i know that some of these attacks can be difficult, but in my opinion the best way to beat them is to manipulate yourself into thinking the fights easy. thats how i trained myself!! i guess!? i don't really know. all i need to say is encourage yourself to keep going! that youre awesome! that you've got this!!

another thing i'll say -- if jevils is really pissing you off, you can just beat it later and then once returning to your save file in a different chapter, you should be able to get the item from the fight when you go left in the castle town (i think. i always beat the bosses when i can... sorry....)

with all of that aside, it is time to finally get into the official guide! but before i do....

HUGE SPOILER WARNING UP AHEAD!
HOW TO GET TO HIM
i feel like a lot of people call jevil harder than he actually is. the best way to put it is that at first glance, jevils attacks seem nearly impossible to dodge, but you've really gotta study them, ya know? (again, this is coming from someone whose beat him on the nintendo switch and pc when they were like - 10, and now 7 years later has beat him again on pc)

HOW TO GET TO JEVIL

getting to jevil is pretty easy, as you don't have to do much except for explore.

before fighting king, you'll have to find 3 broken key pieces scattered around.

THE FIRST KEY

the first key (broken key A) can be located at seams shop by talking to him and asking seam about jevil. seam will then give you the next location of where the next key is located, yet says it in a riddle for some reason????

THE SECOND KEY

broken key b, the second key, can be found in the scissor dancers area in the forest. when you walk around this area, you'll notice that theres a chest, but theres no visible way to get to it. to get to it, you have to access a secret path (oooo) which is over in the lower left corner in the middle of the very lowest square. before getting to the key, you'll fight 3 rabbicks so watch out!

THE FINAL KEY

the final key, broken key c, can be found past one of the box puzzles. one you get past that gate, go straight up and solve the card symbol-puzzle-thing (i don't know what to call it LOL). the solution can be found in the card castle, shown in the order of the shaped doors on the main floors, but if you want the solution right here and now (which i assume you do...) here you go: diamond, heart, club, spade

HOW TO FIX THE KEY

once you've gathered all the keys, head over to the bake sale and speak to mallice and ask him to fix items. he'll automatically fix the key, and now you can head back over to jevil and unlock the door!
ITEMS YOU SHOULD HAVE ON YOU
a couple years ago, reddit user Im-A-Faun-You-Dork created a chart of the best items you can equip for chapter 1. you can see the full post here , but i'll still talk about the items in this post if you're too lazy to follow the link.

HEALING ITEMS

the best healing items for this fight are:
  • the top cake, which heals 80hp to the whole team. you can get it by taking a slice of topchef's cake and giving it to mallice to repair, then returning the cake to topchef.
  • 2 revived mints, one coming from the scissor dancers room and the other coming from the floor below the hip shop in the card castle. (personally, i managed to beat him with just one revive mint and left the slot of the other one for ralseis manual LOL)
  • 8 darkburgers which you can buy from seams seap for d$70
  • and last but not least, a clubs sandwhich. you can find this in the card castle on the second floor.

BEST ARMOUR FOR EACH CHARACTER

each following setup should give each character in your party 5DF

KRIS: iron shackle, which can be found in ralsei and kris' prisoner cell in the card castle, and an amber card which can be bought at seams seap for d$100

SUSIE:
PACIFIST: dice brace, which can be found at the puzzle before you fight clover, and an amber card
GENOCIDE: iron shackles, give the dice brace to kris instead, and an amber card. using this will give you an attack of 177 with the brave ax instead of the usual 166 when using rude buster.

RALSEI: white ribbon, which can be found in the maze of death area when exploring, and an amber card.

BEST WEAPON FOR EACH CHARACTER

KRIS: spookysword, can be bought in seams seap for d$200

SUSIE: brave ax, can be bought in the hip shop for d$150

RALSEI: there are two weapons that can be the best for him depending on your route...
PACIFIST: dainty scard, which can be found in the hip shop for d$200
GENOCIDE: ragger, which can be found in the room to the top left of the area with the four "bullet spinners". this gives ralsei +2ATK.

STRATEGY
PACIFIST

in order to spare jevil, you have to tire him out. tiring him out takes a moment, and is a bit hard depending on whether or not you are able to keep your team alive. there are two ways to tire him out, hypnosis, which requires the whole party to be alive and 50%tp, and pirouette, which only requires kris to be alive and 20%tp.

while it seems like pirouette would be the best option, pirouette only tires jevil out by 0.5, whereas hypnosis tires him out by 1, which would allow you to complete the fight in 9 turns. not only that, but depending on the turn, pirouette can cause actions to occur depending on what turn your on, which can either impact you positively or negatively. heres the full list of what occurs on each turn when pirouette is used (thank you to the deltarune wiki jevil page[deltarune.fandom.com] for this information):

Something happened! [Unused]
It was just foley! [Turn 1, nothing happens]
JEVIL felt at ease! JEVIL's defense dropped! [Turn 2, lowers Jevil's defense by 4 unless already below -16]
Awkward! Upcoming attack will hurt rapidly! [Turn 3, 60% fewer invincibility frames for this turn]
Tranquil! The dance defended the party! [Turn 4, decreases Jevil's Attack by 30% for this turn]
What! It's nothing but a useless bird! [Turn 5, nothing happens]
It felt comforting! [Turn 6, 25-55 HP heal to a random party member]
Everyone's HP got jumbled up! [Turn 7]
JEVIL's upcoming move got powered up! [Turn 8, increases Jevil's Attack by 25% for this turn]
A perfect 10! [Turn 9, 36-50 HP heal to all party members]

i'm pretty sure that if you haven't beaten jevil by turn 9, then this all repeats.
(yes i copied and pasted it straight from there i was lazy to type it all out)

moving back over to talking about strategy, the best thing for you to do is to use hypnosis whenever you can, and to heal your team if they take damage. i would say to keep your team above 70-75% of their health, or just as high as you can. if you ever feel as though the next attack will be too hard for you, then i'd say don't heal/revive anyone yet and keep track of what turn your on so you can use pirouette instead (unless kris is dead, at that point just defend).

defeating jevil through pacifist will allow you to get the jevilstail, an armor with stats of +2ATK, +2DF, and +2MAGIC (idk the abbreviation for magic oops.)

GENOCIDE

while i actually haven't completed the genocide route, i would say really keep susie alive considering shes the strongest in the party. there isn't much i have to say about the genocide route besides keep attacking and keep using susies rude buster as much as you can.

HEALING STRATEGY

when you should use each item is what really counts, in my opinion. for my fight with jevil, i didn't actually follow the best equipment guide so my inventory was full of rouxlsrouxs, the spincake, and the clubs sandwhich everytime i fought jevil since i didn't go back to seam for the dark burgers. i would say to only use the clubs sandwhich and the cake for when you really need it, for example if the whole team is below about 70-75%, but is about 40-45%, use the club sandwhich, and if the team as a whole is dangerously low, use the cake.
i feel as though the biggest problem i had when i first got stuck on jevil back when i was a kid was how i was so scared to heal my team since i didn't want to run out of healing items (i was traumatized by the sans boss fight as a child LOL), but don't forget that ralsei has the ability to heal. use this if someone is below that 70-75%, but don't use it CONSTANTLY. don't forget that you still need to use 50% of your tp for either rude buster or hypnosis (depending on your route)
ATTACKS
NOW TO SPEAK MORE SPECIFICALLY ON HIS ATTACKS!

if you want to mentally prepare yourself, memorize jevils dialogue, as its connected to whatever attack he'll preform next. i think that the only time that this will change is after phase 3 if you haven't hit phase 4 yet or just haven't hit the next phase in general? i'm not too sure.... sorry :,) ANYWAYS considering i'm talking about phases lets get into them!! (except i'm copying from the wiki [deltarune.fandom.com] again cause i'm too lazy to describe them myself.)

Phase 1: Initial phase
Phase 2: Jevil's Tiredness must be at least 2 or his HP must be 2800 or lower (80%).
Phase 3: Jevil's Tiredness must be at least 4 or his HP must be 2100 or lower (60%).
Phase 4: Jevil's Tiredness must be at least 6 or his HP must be 1400 or lower (40%).
Phase 5: (Automatically entered after Phase 4's final attack)

so, lets talk about the attacks in each phase now.

PHASE ONE

TURN 1

in this attack, jevil will teleport around the attack-box-thing, throwing 5 tiny spade bullets that fan out depending on his direction/location.

the best way to avoid being hit?

really, just don't get hit. the middle spade is the main one that targets you, so you'll have to move every time jevil sends out more spades, making sure you aren't caught inbetween any crossing spades.

TURN 2

this time, 10 bigger spade bullets pop up around the attack box and begin to move one after the other in a spiral pattern, moving towards the middle in either clockwise or counter-clockwise rotations.

a small tip to know which way it'll move is to pay attention to the spades as the first two will light up, indicating which way the spiral will move and which spade will move first, allowing you to prepare yourself. the best way to not get hit? dodge either to the right or left (depends on rotation) and then circle the spiral, keeping distance from it (you should be moving the opposite from the rotation of the spiral). remember to be careful at the last spade as it'll go in a straight line and could throw you off/cause unwanted damage.

TURN 3

jevil will basically bomb you with hearts (LOL), they fall where the attack-box is located and explode at the same level of the heart, forming a square of 4 hearts that rotate both clockwise and counter-clockwise. this attack damages the whole party, so this is an attack to really be careful on.

the best way to avoid getting hit in this attack is to just move up and down slowly and to avoid moving into the center of the square as much as possible (THIS DOESN'T MEAN TO AVOID IT COMPLETELY! if a heart is blocking your way up and more hearts are on their way, use the middle to get away from those hearts and get out of it as quick as possible.)

TURN 4

four knifes move in and out of the center of the attack box and rotate either clockwise or counter-clockwise. pretty simple i guess?
i HATED this attack when fighting him for a moment since i felt like it was too hard until i realized the easiest thing to do to avoid getting hit is to just move in a circle and slightly move with the direction of rotation. again, simple? idk.

PHASE 2

it shouldn't be too hard to get here, as long as you managed to use hypnosis twice, pirouette four times, or jevils hp is lower than 80%.

TURN 1

horses fly in rows from the left to the right, kind of like a 3d cylinder (thanks for the description wiki), and bob up and down according to a pattern, the pattern changing slightly over time.

the biggest part to avoid in these horses is their body, as thats what you'll take damage to. the best way to avoid getting hit is to not hit the bodies and move from row to row. TAKE THE SMALL HITBOX FOR GRANTED -- USE THAT EXTRA MOVING SPACE THE HEAD GIVES YOU.

TURN 2

wow! its more bombs..! thanks...!

anyways, instead of hearts, this time its clubs, the formation being similar to the spades attack. think of this as the spade bullet 2.0, and hopefully this attack is just as easy for you (or, if the spade bullet is hard, hopefully this attack is just as easy for you (or, if the spade bullet is hard, hopefully this is easier?)

again, just try not to get caught in the path of any crossing clubs.

TURN 3

this is basically a sped up version of one of rudinns attacks. this one is fairly easy, the goal is to just avoid the diamonds that fly upward into the attack-box.

keep the soul at the top of the attack-box to give yourself time to react, leaving a little wiggle room above you in case you can't move right or left to dodge upcoming diamonds. pay attention to below and next to you.
TURN 4

basically P1T2, just a bit longer, and both you and the attack are faster.

PHASE 3

oh boy basically half way there! awesome!!

TURN 1

carasoul again! but this time there are ducks oh my glob!! ihatethisattacksomuch

best way to avoid getting hit on this one is to stay close to the bottom and move up whenever you gotta.

TURN 2

more bombs! wowie!!! these ones carry spades!! and shoot out 10 of them in a circle!

AVOID GETTING CAUGHT INBETWEEN ANY CROSSING SPADESSSSSSSSS

TURNN 3

clubs show up outside of the attack-box and shoot 3 individual 3-way spread bursts of bullets aiming at the soul (the wiki is my saving grace of describing these when i can't can you tell)

this attack is basically a sped up version of one of clovers attacks. best way to not get hit? try to get through the bullet rows before the spread apart and look all wonky (idk how to describe it just look at the vid i linked further down)

TURN 4

knifes again!!! wow jevil so clev- WHAT IS THAT WHY IS THERE ANOTHER KNIFE-

this is another attack i HATEDDDD it made such an easy attack so hard. basically the same as the 4 knifes attack but this time a big red knife appears outside of the attack-box, alternating which side and level its on (theres only top and bottom). the big knife can only hit you 3 times despite showing up 4 times.

avoiding this is hell, and idk how to describe it, but once you see the huge knife, before it moves across the box, wait until the smaller knifes are spread out and cross to the other side. make sure to keep moving in that circular motion.

PHASE 4

check it out bro! you're almost there!!!

TURN 1

jevil will teleport around the attack-box like in the very first attack in phase one BUT its more rapid, and each time he shoots one diamond at you.

avoid. crossing. diamonds.

TURN 2

you know all the other bombs before? yeah well now theyre thrown into one singular attack HAH. this time, we get a new bomb of a diamond bomb that fires 3 diamond bullets towards you, each bullet moving slower than the last. in the text, this attack is called the CHAOS BOMB (and its prepared FOR YOU awe look at you so special)

hearts don't show up as much, but you want to be extra careful around those and the diamond bombs since they target wherever the soul is at.

TURN 3

jevil finally slows down a little bit, and we get a repeat of the knock-off rudinns attack that is a bit more slow. congrats! you're almost done!!!

TURN 4

attack-box becomes the whole screen, and giant knifes start falling down from the top, damaging you upon touch. once they touch the ground, they create a [block? pillar? idk] of white light that damage you if you get into their hit box (which is pretty small.)
nearing the end of the attack, you'll notice a pattern of axes moving like this:

knife.............................................knife
.....knife..................................knife
............knife.....................knife

........................knife

...............knife..............knife
.......knife............................knife
knife.........................................knife

........HUGE KNIFEEEEE
CONGRATS!!
HEY! WOW! LOOK AT YOU, SUCH A BIG SHOT! YOU DID IT!

if you need a visual aid on any of these attacks, heres a no hit i found on youtube that helped me study his attacks and might help you too :)

KEEP IN MIND

please don't doubt yourself! the more you retry at fighting him, the better you'll get at memorizing his attacks. try your best not to give up, and make sure to use whatever works best for you. don't follow my guide WORD FOR WORD ACTION FOR ACTION. its called a guide for a reason, not a step-by-step process.

anyways -- i'll work on a guide for spamton, spamton neo, and gerson in the near future, so keep an eye out for that ;)

good luck on your journey fellow lightners, i believe in you, and this guide is always here for you when you need it
