there must be something more to it. I was never eaten by worm and when I tried this on purpose way after the endgame no animation triggered, just the respawn.

Can confirm you have to do the ENTIRE quest chain up until building your own Sandbike and crossing the desert for this to scene to trigger, shortcutting the Sandbike does not work.
