Merchant 64 - Masked Thieves spottings
By Silver Bunny
During your playthrough of Merchant 64, you will find the Awake mask upgrade, which helps you not get robbed when sleeping on the streets. You will also learn in Cashewberg that there are thieves wearing these masks, roaming to steal those sleeping outside. But did you know you can actually spot them? These are the ones I found!

Introduction - The Awake Mask and Masked Thieves
Mechant 64 is a slow-paced, chill little N64-esque title. I quite like it! It's pretty simple, and can get a bit repetitive, but the atmosphere and charm of it all makes it worth it! But you're not here for a tiny review, are you?

While going through my playthrough of the game, I froze in shock when I spotted strange masked individuals, outside of the play area, wearing the "Awake Mask": An actual upgrade you can get in CashewBerg, which reduces the amount of money and items stolen from you if you rest outdoors. It's quite fitting that in that very same town, there are some NPCs talking about some "masked weirdos" that steal from you if you rest in a bench:

Interestingly enough, these individuals don't show up until you acquire said upgrade. From that point onwards, you'll be able to find them lurking in every single town! Here are the ones I found...
AcornVille
AcornVille is the very first town you visit, a sweet little rural location to get you started. Despite this, this tiny little village seems to house a huge amount of Masked Thieves, with no less than three! Here are their respective locations:

On the far right of the village, beyond the fence. You will only be able to spot this fella as long as you don't get too close to the small fenced garden, since otherwise, the camera will zoom in:

On the far left of the village, behind the green roofed house. A bit harder to spot, the next possible location is all the way to the left, behind the green house, between all the trees:

On the back end of the village, the very last Masked Thief is hidden. Finally, the last thief can be found at the furthest point from the entrance, next to the Inn.
BeechTown
Heading into our next village, we have BeechTown, a sweet little town with a really really nice vibe! You can tell it's a more consumeristic place, with taller, less rural buildings; and the introduction of the second tier of items: Stuff. Here we will find the next wave of thieves:

To the left just as you enter BeechTown. The first Masked freak we may spot is right as we enter the village, on the left side from it. They're hidden between a house and a tree.

On the furthest right spot behind the Inn. This one is kind of cheeky, since it basically requires you to hug the rightest spot in town. Here we can spot the other possible location for the thieves, next to some rocks behind the Inn.

All the way to the back, on the right side if the town. This one may be the creepiest, as they're all the way on the back, deep within the fog and forest...
CashewBerg
We finally reach our final destination: CashewBerg. Now this town sure feels like some sort of capital or big city! Despite its size and more expensive catalogue of items, the number of thieves hasn't increased. Here are the last three burglars:

On the left side, behind the big building inside a stand. The thieves in this town are quite hidden compared to the rest, very far away from the playable area. This one can be seen on the left side of the town, behind a big building inside a distant stand.

On the furthest spot from the entrance, between the Inn and the yellow roofed house. A quite distant spot, as you can even see the fog kicking in. If you look at a small stand between and behind the Inn and the house to the right, you may find this thief.

On the right side of the town, behind a big building inside a stand. As if it were mirrored, this thief can be spotted just like the one on the left: Behind a big building inside a stand (this one has a cloth roof!).
SPOILERS - Is there any correlation between them and the endings?
The short answer, is a simple: No. Not a single one of the endings brings them up. The closest relations between them and an ending you may find is with Ending C, where you set up a mask shop:

So the conclusion is pretty simple: They're a cool, kind of creepy easter egg; and these sorts of thing sure bring life into a game!!
Closure - Thanks for reading!!

I really really hope you enjoyed it, as it took me two entire playthroughs that lead to another discovery... another guide may be on the way!! But for now...
