Medieval 2: Teutonic Unit and Tactics Guide
By A Gamer
Welcome to my guide for The Britannia campaign! This guide assumes you have read my Medieval 2 guide or you are already familiar with the Medieval 2 campaign. The Medieval 2 guide is also available on Steam & GameFaqs! Most unit entries for existing units will describe how the unit is different from the Medieval 2 version. Please consult that guide for further details on that unit. Some of the below text regarding tactics is copy pasted from my Medieval 2 guide as it is just as relevant in the expansions!

Note that mercs in this game seem to be tied to each faction, for example you will never find Cumans as anyone but Lithuania. At least i think that's how it works. Mercs will be added to this guide at some point in the future after more testing.

Version Info
1.0 7th of December 2024: Loads of minor corrections, added morale and other missing stuff and corrected a few missing unit descriptions and fixed the faction rosters. First version uploaded to Gamefaqs! Note that mercs are quite complicated in this game and will be coming in an update.

Spearmen
Men stabbing each other with spears: Entertaining gamers since 2001.

Armoured Sergeants
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 17 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 640
Factions: HRE

Armoured Sergeants do well for holding off tough cavalry and for acting as standard line troops to hold enemies. Their armour is light however; if you should fight them, hammer them with missiles.

Dismounted Light Lancers
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 13 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 390 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Mongols

Dismounted Light Lancers are strong spearmen and should be destroyed with a mix of horse archers and crossbowmen as they are strong in melee and will put a dent in any unit, even swordsmen or axemen. Their light armour is their handicap. They are the only unit of spearmen in this campaign that are Disciplined, so they will likely die rather than rout.

Dismounted Tartar Lancers
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 12 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 390 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

Tartar Lancers are identical to Mongol Light Lancers and will come in very handy for Lithuania to counter powerful Teutonic cavalry. Their excellent attack and morale makes them much better than Estonian Rebels.

Estonian Rebels
Attack: 8 Charge: 3 Defence: 14 Armour: 3 Morale: 5 Cost: 350 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

Estonian Rebels are solid spearmen that will be Lithuania's lifeline in the early campaign. They are one of the few starting troops they have that can hold a line worth a damn! They have slightly better armour than Dismounted Tartar Lancers, but they have a much weaker attack and about half the morale. Tatar lances require an upgraded castle and time to recruit however, both of which are in short supply with the TO breathing down your neck! Once you can recruit Tartars they are strictly better besides their slightly lower armour. They are very important to Lithuania to kill off the dreaded Teutonic cavalry which is one of their main powers. Use them to protect your archers and crossbowmen.

Levy Spearmen
Attack: 7 Charge: 3 Defence: 11 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 450 Upkeep: 125
Factions: England

Levy Spearmen are weak spearmen only used by England when they send armies to dismantle Lithuania. They aren’t anything special at all, although they are better than Spear Militia

Order Spearmen
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 20 Armour: 6 Morale: 9 Cost: 730 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Teutons

Order Spearmen are extremely powerful spearmen with a strong attack and very high defence and amour for spearmen. These spears will make a horrible mess of any cavalry they catch and their very high defence makes them great to hold any enemy while you flank or shoot them. These troops are a must have for most battles as the Order to counter Lithuanian cavalry.

If you are Lithuania this should be one of the first units you target with your archers or preferably, crossbowmen. Use horse archers and shoot them down. Flank them whenever possible but don’t expect them to rout easily with their high morale.

Sergeant Spearmen
Attack: 9 Charge: 4 Defence: 13 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 400 Upkeep: 155
Factions: HRE

Sergeant Spearmen are a weaker, unarmoured version of Armoured Sergeants. They are weaker in all ways and very vulnerable to missiles.

Spearmen
Attack: 9 Charge: 4 Defence: 15 Armour: 2 Morale: 5 Cost: 430 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Novgorod, Poland

Spearmen despite their totally generic name are good spearmen with good attack and better than average defence. They do a good job vs. most enemies, but their armour is less than most, so try to not let them shot up. Lithanua should have quite an easy time with these spearmen as their low armour is just begging for a hail of missiles.

Spear Militia
Attack: 6 Charge: 2 Defence: 9 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 280 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Novgorod, Denmark, Lithuania HRE

Spear Militia are about the same as they have always been in Medieval 2. In this campaign however they are a bit too weak to stand up to the multitude of heavy cav badasses and are best relegated to garrison duty. At the very start of the campaign when money is tight these men have a place in your line but phase them out as soon as possible.

Lithuania has little choice but to use this unit at the start of the campaign. All but one of their starting settlements are cities and this is one of the only units they have than can hold a line for any length of time. Keep your general nearby and make sure they are not flanked or they will rout easily.

Town Militia
Attack: 6 Charge: 2 Defence: 6 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 160 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Novgorod HRE, Lithuania

Town Militia are far weaker than they are in any other campaign and very inferior to Spear Militia. Their defence is pretty woeful, but they at least only cost just a hair more than Peasants to recruit and are somewhat more competent. Use them as garrisons along with Peasants and keep them away from the battlefield if possible. They are just too weak to stand up to just about any enemy.

Pikemen
Long sticks vs cavalry archers? Sign me up!

Pikemen are only available to the Order and they aren’t very useful. Lithuania’s main strength is in its various missile units and slow moving, lightly armoured pikemen with no shields are about the worst possible counter to that. You should ignore pikemen and use Order Spearmen instead for your anti-cavalry needs.

Burgher Pikemen
Attack: 8 Charge: 5 Defence: 8 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 550 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Teutons

Burgher Pikemen are the only pikemen in the Teutonic campaign besides mercenaries and they are pretty average, with low attack and defence, but they at least have armour unlike the majority of pikemen in Medieval 2. Their morale is also excellent. Pikemen are of limited use and you should use Order Spearmen rather than waste florins on these men.
Swordsmen
Swordsmen
Swords: so stylish they go with any outfit.

Swordsmen are much the same in the Teutonic campaign as other Medieval 2 campaigns. They often have good armour and excel against lightly armoured enemies, especially spearmen and light to medium armoured opponents. They are dismantled badly by axemen and cavalry charges will kill a lot of them.

Dismounted Ritterbruder
Attack: 14 Charge: 3 Defence: 20 Armour: 7 Morale: 11 Cost: 690 Upkeep: 225
Factions: Teutons

Ritterbruder are the best swordsmen in the game by a large margin and pack a very, very high attack for a one handed sword unit and very high defence. They also have excellent stamina, are Impetuous and are highly trained They cause fear in enemy infantry, so they will quickly rout many units with the fear and casualties alone.

Ritterbruder are almost unroutable; only if they are down to 1/10 of their numbers and their general is dead will they rout and you can count on them hewing their way though most enemies. Just watch out for the multitude of axemen in this campaign, as axemen will have a much easier time killing these men.

You really want to focus on wiping out Ritterbruder quickly if you are their enemy. Shoot them with crossbows, horse archers and javelin cavalry and use lots of AP axemen. If they rout, send cavalry after them to make sure they don't rally and to kill routers. Execute prisoners after battle to make sure they don’t come at you again. If you’re using them keep them well protected by silencing enemy archers and sending in cheaper units first vs axemen so your elites aren’t focused on.

Gotland Footmen
Attack: 15 Charge: 9 Defence: 13 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 520 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Denmark

Gotland Footmen are very tough two handed swordsmen with all round good stats and as they pierce amour and have very high morale they should carve their way though most enemies. If you are facing these men whittle them down with crossbows or gunpowder as much as possible.

Order Militia
Attack: 7 Charge: 2 Defence: 8 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 310 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Teutons

Order Militia are weak swordsmen that should only be used to fight spearmen and work as fodder units. They make good, cheap filler for a Teutonic army and have decent enough morale to hold for a while. They totally lack armour, so armour upgrades are much appreciated.

As Lithuania these men are an excellent target for your archers; they die quickly with their lack of armour and they can chew through your spearmen quickly. They are untrained.

Sword Brethren
Attack: 11 Charge: 3 Defence: 15 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 510 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Teutons

Sword Brethren are much better than Order Militia and should do a good job vs. any standard infantry or spearmen. They do well against axemen, as their light armour means they don’t lose much from their AP attack. They are Disciplined and have excellent morale for such a basic unit. They will hold for a long time against just about anything. Use these men as your main filler for Order armies later in a campaign.

For Lithuania, their armour is still insufficient for stopping arrows and they are another good target for your archers as they will really mess your troops up in melee.
Axemen
Axemen
Axing me a question? Norway!

Berdiche Axemen
Attack: 16 Charge: 9 Defence: 12 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 410 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Novgorod

Berdiche Axemen pack a big attack, but their low armour is a serious handicap and this unit will often take as many casualties as it dishes out. Berdiche are quite cheap and match up pretty well with Sword Brethren, so they work decently as your basic infantry of the line to fill your armies with cheap, capable troops. Just keep them far away from missile fire, as their light armour and lack of shields will get them killed very quickly. They are useful as flankers: as their charge bonus is utterly devastating for infantry and they will easily kill many with their charge.

Dismounted Bajorija
Attack: 9 Charge: 3 Defence: 17 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 580
Factions: Lithuania

Bajorija are tough high-morale axemen with an average attack and powerful defence; they are better at surviving than actually hurting enemies.

They are best used against well armoured enemies as their low attack and poor charge make them rather inferior to most swordsmen vs lightly armoured foes.

They come in very useful indeed for the mostly lightly armoured Lithuanians. Most of the early game will be centred around getting a decent army of these and dismounted lancers together to kick the Order out of your lands, as they can fight the Order toe to toe with some support They are Disciplined.

Dismounted Boyar Sons
Attack: 9 Charge: 3 Defence: 15 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 540 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Novgorod

Boyar Sons are another great axe unit and you should use these instead of Berdiche Axemen when you can, as they have a much easier time surviving due to their shields. Boyars will cleave though the same enemies with little difficulty that Berdiche would take a lot of causalities to destroy. You should target more heavily armoured foes to put their AP axes to work and leave lighter enemies for other infantry.

Dismounted Druzhina
Attack: 9 Charge: 3 Defence: 15 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 540 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Novgorod

Druzhina are just like Boyar Sons.

Dismounted Halbbruder
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 12 Armour: 6 Morale: 9 Cost: 630 Upkeep: 225 Morale: 9
Factions: Teutons

Halbbruder are the only unit of one handed polearms in the Medieval 2 series, although they have a shield rating of zero, meaning their shield is actually just a decoration and thus they are very vulnerable to missiles.

Halbbruder use fast animations which are much different to the other Medieval 2 style halberds that tend to get countered and die a lot. They are much more effective at killing than normal polearms and they also pierce armour. These men should make a mess of just about any enemy unit. Just watch out for crossbowmen. They have excellent morale and are disciplined.

Dismounted Huscarls
Attack: 9 Charge: 3 Defence: 15 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 540 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Denmark, Norway

Dismounted Huscarls are yet another version of Boyar Sons and serve as the infantry of the line for Denmark. Huscarls will make up the majority of your army as Denmark and their sharp axes and good morale should ensure a large force of them will carry the day. They are cheap enough that it’s easy to simply overwhelm enemies in a vast ocean of AP axe blades. Because they are your mainline soldiers getting them armour upgrades is a good idea.

Followers of Perkunas
Attack: 13 Charge: 7 Defence: 7 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 350 Upkeep: 90
Factions: Lithuania

The Followers of Perkunas use two handed war scythes that act like axes and wear no armour. They scare enemy infantry and are disciplined. They can’t have their amour upgraded at all, so this unit will always be very weak defensively. The Followers are best used as terror dealers instead of standard melee troops. By just parking them near enemies already in melee you can intimidate them into fleeing much sooner. They can also work decently against spearmen and weaker units but their lack of armour gets them killed easily. They make excellent flankers however as their high attack will kill enemies fast and their non-existent armour matters a lot less when they aren’t focused on. They only have average morale, which is sort of strange for a unit like this.

Norse Axemen
Attack: 16 Charge: 9 Defence: 14 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 440 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Denmark

Norse Axemen are pretty much just like Berdiche Axemen; tolerable as line infantry but much better replaced with Dismounted Huscarls. They can beat tough units, but they will take high casualties at the same time.

Sami Axemen
Attack: 14 Charge: 8 Defence: 13 Armour: 5 Morale: 5 Cost: 320 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Denmark, Norway

Sami Axemen are a slightly weaker version of Norse Axemen and should be used (or not) in the same way. They have a low mental state.

Samogitian Axemen
Attack: 16 Charge: 9 Defence: 14 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 440 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

Samogitian Axemen are yet another unit of average two handed axemen that are totally eclipsed by the superior one handed axemen of their factions. These men are quite useful early on to take down spearmen and in sieges, but replace them with Dismounted Bajorija when you can.

Sudovian Tribesmen
Attack: 5 Charge: 1 Defence: 8 Armour: 2 Morale: 3 Cost: 310 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

Sudovian Tribesmen are incredibly weak axemen useful only as garrisons and fodder. They have a horrible attack, next to no armour, a useless charge and low morale. At the very start of the campaign when all you really have is weak spearmen and archers these men can hold and kill a few, but phase them out as soon as possible. They have a low mental state that Spear Militia do not share so they are actually less stable than militia! A setback or two and they rout. If you must use them try to have the militia take the hits and flank with these men so their morale does not drop too quickly.

Viking Raiders
Attack: 7 Charge: 2 Defence: 11 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 450 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Denmark, Norway

Viking Raiders are useful axemen. They are cheap, have reasonable stats and you can recruit them in great numbers easily as they only need basic buildings. Early on as Denmark a horde of Viking Raiders with a core of Huscarles is a very effective fighting force. Once you are rich enough you can phase out Viking Raiders in favour of more Huscarles, although they remain quite effective with their AP axes and good morale. They begin with no armour at all, so getting them some is a very good idea. They are untrained.

Woodsmen
Attack: 12 Charge: 7 Defence: 6 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 210 Upkeep: 90
Factions: Novgorod, Poland

Woodsmen are pretty useless axemen, as they have horrible defence and will be cut down very quickly in melee. Their attack is low for two handed axemen as well. They are superior to Peasants and just as cheap in upkeep so they are useful as garrisons, but keep them off the battlefield. Armour upgrades are useful to give them a chance of surviving a hit.
Polearms & Archers
Polearms
“No of course not Throltig! Of course we aren’t crossbow fodder”!

Giltine’s Chosen
Attack: 19 Charge: 7 Defence: 24 Armour: 6 Morale: 11 Cost: 620 Upkeep: 115
Factions: Lithuania

Giltine’s Chosen have the highest stats of any unit in the Medieval Total War series, with an incredible attack and astronomical defence. They scare infantry. They are Impetuous and are highly trained Unfortunately, because they are two handed polearms they suffer a bit from bugs. Weirdly, they actually have a shield bonus, despite not having shields, so they are more than tough to kill in melee. The Chosen have very high morale and will usually die to a man rather than rout.

Their super powerful AP attack and heavy amour makes them extremely effective against spearmen and swordsmen as the enemy have a difficult time damaging them since they can’t get though the Chosen’s defence, while the Chosen can slaughter their enemies by cutting though their armour like paper. Scaring enemies is also very useful indeed as enemies will flee much more quickly. They are a steal for their price!

Obudshaer
Attack: 10 Charge: 6 Defence: 14 Armour: 6 Morale: 9 Cost: 830 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Poland

Obudshaer are overpriced. They are really of limited use as their lousy attack for a two hander and the buggy polearms combine to make them little more than heavily armoured fodder. They are REALLLY overpriced, they cost more than the Chosen above and are worse units by far in every way.

Sword Staff Militia
Attack: 8 Charge: 5 Defence: 12 Armour: 5 Morale: 5 Cost: 610 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Denmark

Sword Staff Militia aren’t anything amazing what with their low attack rating, but they are well armoured and pierce armour, so they can hold enemies for a while and survive, thanks to their heavy armour. They are very expensive however and for their price you’re better off with Huscarls.

Archers
Sharp flying things: a good argument against conversion.

A lot of archers in the Teutonic campaign have shields so they are more resilient in melee than you might imagine.

Archer Militia
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 5 Charge: 1 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 200 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Novgorod

Archer Militia are bog standard archers and should just be used as garrisons as Novgorod has tons of archers that are better than this. Only if you have nothing else should you use these troops on the battlefield. They are untrained.

Baltic Archers
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 7 Charge: 1 Defence: 7 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 320 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

Baltic Archers are better than Peasant Archers and they will come in handy for whittling down the Teutons before they reach melee. They have shields, but they are terrible in melee and are best kept far away from it. If you can however you are much better off recruiting Lithuania’s superior crossbows due to the Order’s many heavily armoured units. Baltic Archers are useful for silencing opposing archers, but won’t do too much vs knights. They have a low mental state and are untrained so watch them as they can rout easily.

Dismounted Dvor
Attack: 9 Missile attack: 11 Charge: 3 Defence: 15 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 750 Upkeep: 225
Factions: Novgorod

Dismounted Dvor are ridiculously multiskilled archers. They have an immense missile attack that lets them shred anything lightly armoured. They have a great attack rating for an archer and are well armoured for an archer. They even have an AP axe for a melee weapon as well as a shield, so anything too heavily armoured for their bows can be cut open like a can opener. These troops should be your main line as much as possible as Novgorod, as they are truly do-anything versatile troops. Just watch out for cavalry charges, as Dvor are very expensive.

Dismounted Heavy Archers
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 9 Charge: 4 Defence: 12 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 650 Upkeep 150
Factions: Mongols

Heavy Archers are among the toughest archers around and they will shred just about any unit that doesn’t reach melee with them. They are Disciplined and highly trained. Dismounted Heavy Archers are tough enough to fight off weaker cavalry like Scouts in melee, so use heavy cavalry to wipe them out as quickly as possible. They use an AP mace in melee so they are more of a threat close up than you might expect.

Mongol Foot Archers
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 7 Charge: 1 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 300 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Mongols

Foot Archers are much weaker than other Mongol units and one cavalry charge should shred them easily.

Mongol Infantry
Attack: 9 Missile attack: 9 Charge: 2 Defence: 12 Armour: 2 Morale: 5 Cost: 540 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Mongols

Mongol Infantry are tough units that are equally good at cutting units up in melee as they are at shooting them. A cavalry charge can still destroy these units quickly as they have very little armour.

Norse Archers
Attack: 9 Missile attack: 7 Charge: 2 Defence: 12 Armour: 2 Morale: 5 Cost: 440 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Denmark, Norway

Norse Archers have average aim, but they have much better melee ability than equivalent archers available early on, such as Baltic Archers and they also have shields. Fell free to use these archers for flank attacks.

Peasant Archers
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 5 Charge: 1 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 200 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Novgorod, Poland, Teutons, Lithuania, HRE, Norway

Peasant Archers are the same as they have always been in Medieval 2: that weak horde of archers you use to take out the enemies’ early campaign spearmen before they reach your spearmen, so you can more easily butcher them. They still serve this purpose, but they will very rapidly become outdated with the vast number of much better archers in the Teutonic campagin. Use them as cheap garrisons. They are untrained.

Polish Archers
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 5 Charge: 1 Defence: 9 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 420 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Poland

Poland’s Archers are just like Peasant Archers, except they have large shields, giving them an advantage over their peasant brethren. They are some of the weakest archers in the campaign. They are untrained.

Prussian Archers
Attack: 5 Missile attack: 7 Charge: 2 Defence: 7 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 310 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Teutons

Prussian Archers are competent archers for the Order and help them greatly against Lithuania’s many powerful ranged troops. Use them to pick off the many strong crossbowmen Lithuania will send against your slow infantry. They have shields and are reasonable in melee against weaker spearmen.
Crossbowmen & Horse Archers
Crossbowmen
Sharp and faster flying things: an even better argument against conversion!

Crossbowmen
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 9 Charge: 1 Defence: 4 Armour: 3 Morale: 3 Cost: 360 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Norway

These men are your run of the mill Xbows and should be kept far away from melee, as almost their entire defence stat is due to their tiny amount of armour.

Crossbow Militia
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 9 Charge: 1 Defence: 3 Armour: 2 Morale: 3 Cost: 340 Upkeep: 100
Factions: Novgorod

These men are just like plain crossbowmen, except with slightly less armour and lack of training. Use them in the same way. They are untrained.

Latvian Crossbowmen
Attack: 5 Missile attack 11 Charge: 3 Defence: 11 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 510 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

These Xbows have a strong missile attack and passable melee stats. These troops are important to help whittle down the powerful Teutons before they make it to melee. Their low armour makes them quite vulnerable to the Teutonic Prussian Archers, so keep them out of ranged duels if you can and focus on taking down heavy knights before they reach allied troops. They have a shield and excellent morale, which aids them in melee greatly.

Livonian Auxiliaries
Attack: 5 Missile attack: 14 Charge: 2 Defence: 12 Armour: 2 Morale: 5 Cost: 500 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Teutons

These Xbows have the best missile attack for a crossbow and will shred any enemy. They provide important ranged support for the slow Teutonic Knight army and you should use plenty of them as a large number of these men can destroy enemies before they can even make it to melee, thanks to their powerful missile attack. They are Disciplined.

Peasant Crossbowmen
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 9 Charge: 1 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 290 Upkeep: 100
Factions: HRE

These crossbows have average stats and are very weak in melee. They provide an easy way for the HRE to counter the legions of heavy infantry Denmark will send at them. They are untrained.

Pavise Crossbowmen
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 12 Charge: 1 Defence: 12 Armour: 3 Morale: 3 Cost: 460 Upkeep: 125
Factions: HRE

These crossbows have the same large pavise shield that the Medieval 2 version has. They are also quite a bit better at shooting compared to the peasant version. They are an excellent unit of Xbows and the second best in the campaign. Their morale is only militia level so keep them out of melee.

Horse Archers
Those lovely hats won’t protect them from any foot archer’s fearsome gaze.

Cossack Cavalry
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 8 Charge: 3 Defence: 10 Armour: 0 Morale: 9 Cost: 730 Upkeep: 110
Factions: Novgorod

Cossacks are very good shooters and will cut down any enemy quickly. Despite their excellent morale they have a low mental state for whatever reason. They are untrained.

Dvor Cavalry
Attack: 9 Missile attack: 10 Charge: 3 Defence: 14 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 990 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Novgorod

Dvor Cavalry are very skilled horse archers and will absolutely demolish slow enemies. They also work as good light cavalry. Novgorod should have little trouble with the Order with enough of these guys. They have the same excellent morale as Cossacks and are trained rather than untrained.

Dzukijan Horsemen
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 6 Charge: 2 Defence: 9 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 660 Upkeep: 175
Factions: Lithuania

This unit will be Lithuania’s lifeline early in the game. None of your starting troops can really stand up to the Teutons in melee for too long, so you’ll be using this unit plenty to skirmish and crush the knights at range.

Lithuania has stronger crossbowmen but the difference is of course that these men can keep away from enemies with their horses and shoot them in the back until their ammo is empty. When the Teutons have been sufficiently weakened by missiles Lithuanian infantry can move in to finish them off.

These archers have merely average aim, so try to flank enemies and shoot them in the back to maximise causalities. Make tons of these guys and bring them to every battle. They aren’t good in a melee and you are better off trying to keep them intact so they can gain experience to improve their aim. Armour upgrades are very important with this unit.

Kazaks
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 6 Charge: 1 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 420 Upkeep: 110
Factions: Novgorod

Kazaks are bog standard horse archers with a weak missile attack and awful melee ability. Only use these if you can’t recruit Dvor or Boyar Sons.

Mongol Heavy Archers
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 8 Charge: 2 Defence: 8 Armour: 3 Morale: 5 Cost: 710 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Mongol

Despite being called heavy archers, these men are easy to kill with arrow fire as they only have light armour and horses are a great target for missiles. Use crossbows for best effect. They use AP maces in melee and are disciplined and highly trained. This means they can function better as light cavalry than their stats might indicate.

Mongol Horse Archers
Attack: 5 Missile attack: 8 Charge: 3 Defence: 5 Armour: 0 Morale: 9 Cost: 630
Factions: Mongols

These horse archers are even easier to kill with arrow fire, even if they are skilled shooters, as they lack armour. They are also much weaker in melee than heavy archers, although they do for some reason have nearly twice the morale. They lack AP maces, they are not Disciplined and they are merely trained, rather than highly trained.

Mounted Crossbowmen
Attack: 5 Missile attack: 5 Charge: 1 Defence: 5 Armour: 1 Morale: 3 Cost: 480 Upkeep: 130
Factions: Teutons, HRE, Norway

Mounted Crossbows have lousy stats and there really isn’t a whole lot of reason to use them. The Teutons have no need of this unit as they have superior foot crossbows and more than enough heavy infantry to protect them. The other factions that get them won’t really be fighting any factions with heavy infantry too often. Even if they are, both the HRE and Norway have excellent AP heavy infantry that will be more efficient at killing heavy infantry than this unit will be. They can be used to fight horse archers, but the crossbowman’s low missile attack, slow rate of fire and lack of armour means they can’t stand up to any unit of them alone.

Strzelcy
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 7 Charge: 3 Defence: 13 Armour: 2 Cost: 850
Factions: Poland

Strzelcy are the only other unit of mounted crossbowmen in this campaign. They are better in every way than the generic unit. They are useful light cavalry as well, as they have good melee stats and use a AP axe.
Javelin Cavalry & Gunpowder
Javelin Cavalry
The original Heavy Rain.

Javelin cavalry see a lot of use in the Teutonic campaign. There are a lot of well armoured, axe wielding infantry that need to be thinned down. Lithuania especially relies on this unit in the early game, as they need to cut down the Teutonic Order’s heavy infantry before it can reach melee. Swift horsemen with javelins are a perfect way to weaken the Order before the melee.

Boyar Sons
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 9 Charge: 2 Defence: 12 Armour: 3 Morale: 5 Cost: 740 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Novgorod

Boyar Sons are very useful jav cavalry, as they have some armour and an AP axe as a secondary weapon, so after they have thrown their missiles you can charge in for more anti-armour combat. This unit should be in every Novgorod army.

Cavalry Militia
Attack: 5 Missile attack: 7 Charge: 1 Defence: 4 Armour: 2 Morale: 3 Cost: 470 Upkeep: 110
Factions: Lithuania

Cavalry Militia are decent jav cavalry and do a good job at range, but they are virtually useless in melee with horrible stats and a non existent charge bonus. Use them to shower infantry with javelins, but keep them far away from melee, except for chasing routers. They are untrained.

Polish Nobles
Attack: 9 Missile attack: 11 Charge: 3 Defence: 14 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Defence: 880 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Poland

Polish Nobles are the toughest jav cavalry. They will put a serious hole in any unit as they have the best missile attack in this class and they are very useful against the Teutons, as it gives Poland a highly mobile, AP armed unit to kill off the heavily armoured enemies. They can double as strong light cavalry. They have a low mental state for some reason.

Gunpowder
Because guns are just more FUN than bows!

Arquebusiers
Attack: 3 Missile attack: 14 Charge: 1 Defence: 1 Armour: 0 Morale: 3 Cost: 470 Upkeep: 125 (Novgorod, Poland, Denmark, HRE)
Attack: 5 Missile attack: 16 Charge: 2 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 5 Cost: 530 Upkeep: 125 (Lithuania)

Arquebusiers are exactly the same as they have always been in Kingdoms and should be kept far away from melee as they are completely useless in it. They still have glitches when under archer fire. Lithuanian Arquebusiers are a bit tougher and better shooters, but still are no use in melee.

Lithuania loves these units as they are just perfect for blasting the many, many heavily armoured units out for their blood. Note that Lithuania must convert to Christianity to train this unit. Lithuania’s version is a little better in melee and has one of the highest missile attack stats of any unit in this campaign.

Cossack Musketeers
Attack: 10 Missile attack: 17 Charge: 3 Defence: 5 Armour: 0 Morale: 11 Cost: 800 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Novgorod

Cossack Musketeers are much stronger than Arquebusiers and have a very long range and powerful stats. They are even somewhat decent in melee, although their lack of armour sabotages them. These units still have the gunpowder glitches from Medieval 2, so keep them out of ranged fire and watch them work their magic. They have top tier morale, but are untrained.

Hand Gunners
Attack: 9 Missile attack: 13 Charge: 2 Defence: 7 Armour: 5 Morale: 5 Cost: 630 Upkeep: 150
Factions: Poland, Teutons, Denmark, HRE

Hand Gunners aren’t much use at range because of their very low accuracy, although they still work well for lowering morale. They have heavy armour and work well as flankers and auxiliary melee troops. Their defence is not up to a long melee, so only use them as flankers or for shooting into melee to lower enemy morale. Fire one volley and then charge them into melee and they should rout the enemy soon after.

Reiters
Attack: 7 Missile attack: 16 Charge: 5 Defence: 10 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 900 Upkeep: 185
Factions: HRE

Reiters are gunpowder cavalry and they are extremely powerful gunpowder units and their combination of mobility and devastating firepower lets them absolutely crush enemies and take no causalities. They are best used to pepper slow infantry with their fire, relentlessly skirmishing backwards and shooting until they are crushed. They are also good to run past archers at close range; their movement ensuring they don’t get shot too much, while the close range gunfire will wreck the archer’s morale, often causing lesser archers to rout. They are well armoured and can work as light cavalry, but you really want to keep these rare, hard to train troops out of melee.
Light Cavalry & Mounted Knights
Light Cavalry

The polo tournament got a bit violent.

Calvary Militia
Attack: 3 Charge: 3 Defence: 10 Armour: 2 Morale: 3 Cost: 340 Upkeep: 110
Factions: Novgorod

Cavalry Militia are very weak light cavalry and are suitable only for chasing down archers and artillery. They will drop very quickly in any protracted melee so be careful with them. They are untrained.

Druzhina
Attack: 7 Charge: 5 Defence: 14 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 750 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Novgorod

Druzhina are tough light cavalry and pack good stats, despite their light armour. They will excel at any sort of light cavalry task. They wield AP axes.

Huscarls
Attack: 9 Charge: 3 Defence: 14 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 750 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Denmark, Norway

Huscarls are another unit of tough axe packing light cavalry that do a good job vs just about any unit. Their AP axes give amkle a solid unit for taking on heavy cavalry as they will inflict great damage. Despite their ight armour they have good defence and should hold up well, although they will still lose to elite heavy cavalry.

Hussars
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 14 Armour: 3 Morale: 11 Cost: 820 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Poland

Hussars are the toughest light cavalry in the game with a powerful knight level attack and the same defence as other tough light cavalry. They will do a very good job of chasing down archers and flanking and they have top tier morale, so they will do their duty. Just take care of them, as they are very expensive. Just because they have the best stats doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best however as they lack AP axes, which makes them less versatile.

Knechten
Attack: 7 Charge: 5 Defence: 8 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 540 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Teutons

These light cavalry are weak and should only be used to support the often slow moving Teutonic army by cutting down archers and crossbowmen shooting them. They aren’t much use in a serious melee. Their morale is excellent however, so even if they can’t win a melee they will hold for a long time and thus are good for suicidal tasks, like destroying artillery.

Mongol Light Lancers
Attack: 8 Charge: 5 Defence: 11 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 580 Upkeep: 110
Factions: Mongols

Light Lancers are pretty average light cavalry. These units are some of the weakest among the Mongols and will die quickly to focused archer fire or decent infantry. They are Disciplined.

Mounted Sergeants
Attack: 5 Charge: 4 Defence: 12 Armour 2 Morale: 5 Cost: 460 Upkeep: 130
Factions: HRE

Mounted Sergeants are bog standard light cavalry with crappy attack but good defence for this class. They should be used only for chasing archers and artillery.

Scouts
Attack: 3 Charge: 3 Defence: 10 Armour: 2 Morale: 3 Cost: 400 Upkeep: 110
Factions: Denmark

Scouts are the same as Cavalry Militia, but they have AP axes as secondary weapons. Of course their terrible attack rating makes them nigh on useless in melee, but hey it’s there and makes them a little better at cutting down archers and artillery crews quickly! They are quite overpriced, so only use them if you need them. They are, unsurprisingly, untrained.

Svenner
Attack: 7 Charge: 5 Defence: 7 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 670 Upkeep: 225
Factions: Denmark

Svenner are a stronger version of Scouts and come in handy for cutting down crossbowmen shooting your Huscarl horde. They have very low defence, try to ensure they aren’t caught in a protracted melee if you want them to survive. They are also extremely expensive, particularly their upkeep, so, like Scouts, only use these guys if needed. They do not have AP axes, which a major drawback.

Tartar Lancers
Attack: 6 Charge: 4 Defence: 10 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 Cost: 420 Upkeep: 125
Factions: Lithuania

Tartar Lancers are weak light cavalry and, despite being called lancers, they have a very low charge for cavalry and you’ll have to charge from the back to inflict any serious casualties. Their light armour and average melee stats don’t help. Use these men as melee support by charging flanks and for chasing archers, and upgrade to something better ASAP. They are tolerable vs other cavalry, as their lances give them a +8 bonus, which offsets their poor attack. Keep them away from infantry.

Mounted Knights
This seems fair!

Chivalric Knights
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 16 Armour: 6 Morale: 11 Cost: 870 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Lithuania

These knights give Lithuania a strong, heavily armoured unit perfect for hunting down tough archers and slamming into vulnerable swordsmen like Sword Brethren. You’re better off with axe wielding cavalry for straight melee with other heavy cavalry however. Note that Lithuania must convert to Christianity to train this unit. They are Impetuous.

Christ Knights
Attack: 8 Charge: 5 Defence: 17 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 820 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Teutons

These knights have good defence, but their attack is surprisingly low for a knight. This unit is useful for generic heavy cavalry tasks, but don’t expect them to hold their own in melee with most other heavy cavalry. They are Disciplined, but have inferior morale to Lithuania’s knights.

Feudal Knights
Attack: 8 Charge: 5 Defence: 13 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 720 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Denmark, HRE, Norway, England

Feudal Knights are just like Mailed Knights and are quite a bit weaker than other knights. Use any other knights before these guys. They cost a lot for how average they are. They are Impetuous.

Gothic Knights
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 13 Armour: 8 Morale: 11 Cost: 930 Upkeep: 240
Factions: HRE

While Gothic Knights have the heaviest amour in the game their defence is somewhat wanting for such a heavily armoured unit, as they lack a shield. The lack of a shield gets them killed quickly in melee and by crossbows, despite their awesome armour. It is best to just charge and only stay in melee with weaker enemies. The dismounted version is much better. They have a low mental state. This unit is hugely overpriced, maybe the most obscenely priced unit in this campaign. 240 upkeep a turn for such an average unit is ridiculous, AP maces or not when the dismounted unit is so much better.

Imperial Knights
Attack: 8 Charge: 7 Defence: 16 Armour: 6 Morale: 9 Cost: 820 Upkeep: 185
Factions: HRE

Imperial Knights are tough and have AP maces rather than swords. This makes them very powerful vs. any heavy cavalry and they can cut though the strongest cavalry with relative ease. They are much better than Gothic Knights for less money. They have a low mental state.
Mounted Knights cont
Mailed Knights
Attack: 8 Charge: 5 Defence: 13 Armour: 3 Morale: 9 Cost: 670 Upkeep: 185
Factions: HRE

Mailed Knights are a good deal weaker than most others and only have light armour. Their good attack and high morale makes them useful for light cavalry tasks, but they will fall quickly to any other knights or powerful heavy cavalry. Avoid recruiting them unless truly needed or they will bankrupt you early on in a campaign.

Polish Knights
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 17 Armour: 6 Morale: 11 Cost: 920 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Poland

Polish Knights are almost exactly like Chivalric Knights and should be used in the same way. They are Impetuous.

Ritterbruder
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 20 Armour: 7 Morale: 11 Cost: 970 Upkeep: 240
Factions: Teutons

Ritterbruder are the strongest knights in the campaign easily and will last for a long time in most melee with their very heavy armour and extreme defence. They will tear enemies to shreds with their strong attack and should carry just about all units before them, beside spearmen and hordes of axemen. If you see this unit you want to shoot it down first with as many missiles as possible and then bog it down with as many spearmen as possible with axemen in support. They frighten infantry, so keep your general close by the infantry engaging them. The Teutons have a hard time replacing this unit, so killing it quickly is important to weakening them overall.
Heavy Cavalry & Foot Knights
Heavy Cavalry
Maces: the ultimate argument against militant god botherers

Bajorija
Attack: 8 Charge: 7 Defence: 15 Armour: 5 Cost: 800
Factions: Lithuania

Bajorija have a weaker attack than most heavy cavalry, but they compensate by having an AP axe rather than a sword. This helps them slice their way through the deadly Teutonic heavy cavalry and they still pack a good charge and defence. These are useful cavalry.

Dievas’ Guard
Attack: 10 Charge: 5 Defence: 15 Armour: 4 Morale: 11 Cost: 830 Upkeep: 155
Factions: Lithuania

Dievas’ Guard are strong mace cavalry that have more attack but less armour than Bajorija. They are Disciplined and highly trained, with excellent morale. They will serve well against any heavy cavalry. They can stand up to Teutonic heavy cavalry well with their AP attack. They actually use maces in melee rather than the War Forks listed in the unit description, but they work the same way in game. With this unit a Pagan Lithuania can more than handle anything the Order can throw at them on four legs, just as the Old Gods intended.

Halbbruder
Attack: 8 Charge: 7 Defence: 18 Armour: 6 Morale: 9 Cost: 810 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Teutons

Halbbruder have a low attack and the highest defence among the non-knight cavalry. They do not pierce armour unlike their dismounted version, but still serve as capable cavalry for the Teutons, although they will get murdered by the aforementioned AP Lithuanian cavalry. They are Disciplined and highly trained.

Norse War Clerics
Attack: 9 Charge: 3 Defence: 17 Armour:6 Morale: 9 Cost: 820 Upkeep: 185
Factions: Denmark

Norse War Clerics have great all round stats and their lower attack is because they pack a AP mace, which is just perfect for smashing Huscarls and Teutonic heavy cavalry. This is a great unit and perfect support for your infantry heavy army.

Polish Guard
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 17 Armour: 6 Morale: 11 Cost: 920 Upkeep: 240
Factions: Poland

Polish Guard are powerful heavy cavalry with a great attack and very high defence. They have excellent morale, but they oddly have a low mental state so their morale drops quickly.

Polish Retainers
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 15 Armour: 4 Morale: 11 Cost: 820 Upkeep: 130
Factions: Poland

Polish Retainers are identical to Polish Guard, except with less armour. Use them in the same way. They also have a low mental state.

Foot Knights
Do the Wave!

Dismounted Chivalric Knights
Attack: 11 Charge: 3 Defence: 15 Armour: 6 Morale: 9 Cost: 510 Upkeep: 225
Factions: Lithuania

Chivalric Knights let Lithuania fight the Teutons at their own game, once they grow a town large enough, which is easier said than done. While they have powerful stats and heavy armour you’re better off with Lithuania’s armour piercing axemen most of the time. Note that Lithuania must convert to access this unit.

Dismounted Feudal Knights
Attack: 11 Charge: 3 Defence: 17 Armour: 5 Morale: 9 Cost: 540 Upkeep: 225
Factions: HRE, Norway, Denmark, England

The bog standard Feudal Knights return again! Foot Knights tend to have a lot of problems in Teutonic, because of the huge number of armour piercing units, both ranged and melee. They will still pack a punch vs. anything, but you should be more careful with them.

Dismounted Gothic Knights
Attack: 15 Charge: 8 Defence: 16 Armour: 8 Morale: 9 Cost: 590 Upkeep: 225
Factions: HRE

Gothic Knights are very strong two handed swordsmen. They are AP and are the most heavily armoured infantry in the game. Anything other than axemen and cavalry charges will have a more than tough time taking these men down and you can rely on them to chew though just about anything. Just watch out for crossbows; with no shields your Gothic Knights will die quickly. Lithuania absolutely needs to use crossbows and javelins to take down this unit, as they have little hope in melee.

Dismounted Imperial Knights
Attack: 7 Charge: 3 Defence: 17 Armour: 6 Morale: 5 Cost: 460 Upkeep: 225
Factions: HRE

Imperial Knights have a lower attack than other knights, but this is because they have an AP mace rather than a sword. This lets them cleave their way through heavy infantry and foot knights quickly and you should make good use of these knights. Their morale is merely average, so be careful with them. Lithuania should, as always take as many of them down from range as possible using their javelins.
General & Artillery
General
The ingenious tactic of dressing as a captain aided the general in avoiding too much attention.

Bodyguard
Attack: 11 Charge: 5 Defence: 16 Armour: 6 Cost: 950
Factions: Mongols

The Mongol bodyguard is one of the weaker bodyguards, but they still have a great attack and high defence and should be hacked down with a horde of spearmen ASAP.

General’s Bodyguard
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 18 Armour: 7 Cost: 1010 (Novgorod)
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 17 Armour: 7 Cost: 960 (Teutons, Poland)
Attack: 10 Charge: 5 Defence: 17 Armour: 5 Cost: 960 (Lithuania)
Attack: 11 Charge: 7 Defence: 16 Armour: 5 Morale: 11 Cost: 960 Upkeep: 250 (HRE, Norway, Poland)

As always General’s Bodyguards are powerful units. There are later versions of all these units but the differences are very minor, such as 1 or 2 more armour.

Tsar’s Guard
Attack: 10 Charge: 5 Defence: 18 Armour: 6 Morale: 11 Cost: 920 Upkeep: 240
Factions: Novgorod

Tsar’s Guard is basically just like other Bodyguards.

Artillery
Cannons: Great for keeping Jehovah's Witnesses away from your door.

All Artillery crews share the same stats: Attack: 7 Charge: 3 Armour: 2 Morale: 9 and are disciplined and highly trained.

All artillery in Teutonic is exactly the same as other expansions, consult the sections in the guide to the base game for advice on how to use them.

Peasants and Others
Peasants and Others
Preaching peace? I’ve got your peace RIGHT HERE!

Clergymen
Attack: 12 Charge: 6 Defence: 5 Armour: 0 Morale: 9 Cost: 120 Upkeep: 20
Factions: Teutons

Clergymen are a unique unit. There are 40 men in the unit on large unit sizes. They inspire nearby troops. This means that any troops near them will have better morale and fight for quite a bit longer without routing if you station your Clergymen close by. Use these men to keep your line fighting, especially when using low morale troops like Order Militia or when they are fighting fear inducing enemies. Clergymen should be kept out of direct combat, while they have high morale and a strong attack, their tiny numbers and low defence ensure they will be killed quickly. It is pretty fun watching them bash heretics with large, golden crucifixes however! They are Impetuous.

Peasants
Attack: 2 Charge: 1 Defence: 2 Armour: 0 Morale: 1 Cost: 90 Upkeep: 90 (Mongols)
Attack: 3 Charge: 1 Defence: 3 Armour: 0 Morale: 1 Cost: 110 Upkeep: 90(All others)

Peasants are just the same as most units of peasants in the Total War series. They work as well as they ever have for fodder, more bodies for melee and generally just being killed for amusement. Note that Poland, Novgorod and Lithuanian Peasants have a normal mental state, rather than the low one all other Peasants get. Hard lives make men braver!
