Karma System
By Rokian
This is a short guide explaining the karma system based on the information given out by the developers. It's unfortunately a really poorly explained mechanic so a lot of players struggle to fully understand how the system works. I'm aiming to shed some light on the details.

DISCLAIMER: This entire guide is made based off of what developers have said in the official discord server. Things may change or be inaccurate but I've done my best to compile as much information as I can surrounding the system.

Karma System
When you start the game, you begin with 1,000 karma points, the maximum. If you lose anamnecytes by killing someone, you lose that amount of karma points x10. So if you killed someone and lost 5, you lost 50 karma. If you kill someone as cortex and lose 10, you've just lost 100.

UPDATE/EDIT: Supposedly the karma levels to lose access to the pipe/screwdriver is 850 and the requirement to gain the free to kill status is 750. Can't confirm these personally but they SHOULD be accurate!

If you don't lose anamnecytes for killing someone your karma will remain unaffected. This would include killing a limited player, someone who pushed you or hit you, killing someone during a darkness event or killing nearly anyone as Scum, and so on.

To gain the karma back, you just need to earn anamnecytes, though there is a catch. You will earn one karma per anamnecyte earned, meaning it's a 10:1 ratio of loss to earnings. If you've lowered your karma EXTREMELY low, you'll have an incredibly hard time boosting it back up. Thankfully, it doesn't transfer between servers and should reset when the server rots.

Unfortunately, there is no way to check your exact karma number while playing, but it can still absolutely affect your gameplay, primarily by restricting what fates you can play and what items you can receive for free from some areas. You will lose access to the Sanitar, Limitator, Controller, and Liquidator fates as your karma continues to drop, in that order (Can't confirm the order of losing access personally, relying on word of mouth for that...). You will also lose access to the free pipe from Metalworks or the free screwdriver at Wartime Factory if your karma drops too low. If your karma continues to drop you'll eventually be considered a "free kill", meaning you can be killed by other players with no anamnecyte or karma loss as well.

Finally, that should be all the information on the karma system! I personally am not a big fan of the system in it's current state, but I wanted to share all the information we've been provided thus far as it's a really obtuse mechanic that's never mentioned nor explained and only crops up when a player has already dug themselves too deep.

Can we talk about the fact that you can go negative in anamnecyte for getting goaded into commending someone, become a slave because said random goes on a spree, now that person (who already doesn't give a shit) can body block the boulder path for slaves and continue to troll with zero penalties but affects literally everyone else trying to get positive again. I'm fairly new to this game, but this sort of in-house punishment system usually always gets abused by people.

still dont know if commending ammy loss counts towards karma, considering it doesnt let you go negative when commending

@Robzilla We'll just have to wait and see how the devs plan to punish stealing. If it works, then things will be fixed. If not, we'll have to tell them until they fix it.

The system is garbage. You lose less Karma watching people work and stealing their shit than you do punishing thieves. Then the thieves get more free shit because they have high karma despite being the worst people playing the game.

Dang seriously? I haven't had any restrictions placed on myself because of the system but if you've managed to drop 60+ anamnecytes with no restrictions maybe I've just been getting bad info on the karma thresholds. I'll see if I can look into it more...

it's a fine system I've committed a few warcrimes in some servers against thieves mostly and have never had -karma low enough to where I couldn't play the game normally. Worst thing I ever did was gun down 4 proles as a limitator while waiting to buy an apartment cuz they were all waiting to take it as well. After I did this and got the apartment i had a prole and cortex waiting at my door and they rushed in as soon as i opened I gunned both of them down and was like -15 anamnacytes at this point from 50. Still had no problem playing the game normally so you have to literally be trolling and murdering way too many innocent people if the karma is effecting you.

For killing a thief, karma is removed, it has become more difficult to play, people steal items, but you cannot do anything about it without harming yourself.

There was a bug on a server where you are locked out of fates until you died and it then considered your karma for real.
I like the system. I’d like it to also affect your luck and prices on the darknet. It keeps people in line on the objective of the game. Kill the rot or glory be to the rot.

beautiful article, love fucking over the cops and making them lose amnecytes, now I know how hard it affects their karma. Cops need to be a taught a lesson, sanitars especially, aggravating them and forcing them to kill me when im a sliver of hp gives me a crazy dopamine rush that doesnt compare to playing another other role. fuck the cortex.

Yeah, I'd say the main change that'd be a net positive for the game would just be making it a *little* bit less of a slog to increase your karma again, as a 10 to 1 ratio of losing to gaining is PAINFUL.
