First I want to acknowledge the effort of fellow user Serj, who first made the guide about the same issue, in Russian.

For better visibility and to provide more clear instructions with pictures, I have decided to publish my own version of the guide because I still see people asking about the solution.

Steps

1. Opening the Steam console

Copypaste and open the link:

steam://open/console

to create a new tab on your steam client and access the console.

2. Downloading the unproblematic previous version of the game

Now copypaste the following line on console to start the download:

download_depot 2741360 2741361 6363425040246467019

The screencap below shows the full messages from Steam starting and finishing the download.

3. Overwriting the files

Head to the directory Steam told you, and you'll see the game files.

Now all you need to do is simply to overwrite everything to your Valiant Hearts Coming Home installation. The problem will be fixed, and you'll be allowed to progress.

Amazing, fix still works.

Shame on Ubisoft for not fixing such a common game breaking bug.

It took me awhile to play this after buying it, but I would have barely got past the first few levels of a game I paid for without your fix, so thank you.

@Gunter Basci Copy them all and paste the files in game's install...? Replace everything with what you just downloaded in steps above.

@tAvUk HoPLAtAn 3131 That makes no sense as my method reverts every game file back to that moment when the bug wasn't in the game. If this doesn't work for you now, no way the game allowed you to progress past that chapter back then. Try reinitiating the download and overwrite the files again. Perhaps the files you got were corrupted. It happens sometimes on Steam.

but when i was playing the game there was no achievements so when i entered it the game gave me those badges

@tAvUk HoPLAtAn 3131 I just reverted my game to the broken build, reapplied the files, and ran through the problematic chapter and it still worked for me just fine. Did you properly overwrite everything? If it didn't work for you how did you earn the Frogman achievement?
