Introduction
What’s scarier than a haunted mansion? Scarier than losing your mind to madness?
It’s looking down in a VR game… and realizing you have no hands.

And to make it worse? You’re playing as a painter! No hands, no art — no art, no snacks. It’s a crisis!

But don’t panic just yet. Before you go knocking on the Ancient One’s door begging for dark magic to grow phantom limbs, take a deep breath. This guide will walk you through how to fix the Layers of Fear VR invisible hands bug without resorting to necromancy, blood pacts, or sacrificing your controller to the hardware gods.

Note:
This fix is for Meta Quest 3 headset + Touch Plus controllers, playing the game through Virtual Desktop. In theory, it should also work with Steam Link, Quest 2, and Quest 3S.
As for other headsets? I don't know. If you try it on your headset and it works, feel free to drop a comment and let the other lovely players know!

If this guide helped, smash that thumbs-up before you wander off, yeah?
Get Those Hands Back
Step 1: Open SteamVR Overlay
After entering the game, press the menu button on the left controller to open the SteamVR overlay.
Then, click "Controller Bindings".

Step 2: Set Custom Binding
Change Active Controller Binding to "Custom". Then, select "Edit This Binding".

Step 3: Enable Controller Emulation
Click "Options" in the upper-right corner.
Turn on Compatibility Mode and set it to Index Controller.

Finally, adjust the compatibility settings as shown in the screenshot.

Step 4: Restart the Game and Enjoy Your Hands
The settings will save automatically, so you can simply exit the configuration menu.
Note: The changes won’t take effect immediately — you need to close the game and restart it once for them to apply.

Hallelujah! You’ve got hands now. Look down and admire your glorious hands.
Who needs a girlfriend when you’ve got your own hands back, right?
I’m Too Lazy / Dumb to Read / Do Any of the Above
No worries — I saw this coming.

I’ve uploaded a ready-to-use controller binding template straight to the Workshop. All you need to do is open steamVR overlay -> Change controller binding to "Custom" -> select "CHOOSE ANOTHER" -> find this shared binding and activate it (see screenshot below). You still need to restart the game for it to take effect.
