Running OBSE through Steam (With Steam Overlay)
By Dequanacus
A simple guide to enabling your Steam Overlay while running Oblivion Remastered Script Extender ("OBSE") without needing to add and run OBSE as a separate "Non-Steam Game"

What This Guide is For
Like other Bethesda games, many mods will only work if you have a script extender installed, in this case, Oblivion Remastered Script Extender or "OBSE"

However, for OBSE to run properly, it must be launched directly which, in most instances, prevents the Steam Overlay (screenshots, recording, FPS counter, in game friend chat etc) from enabling.

One alternative solution to this problem is to add the script extender to your Steam Library as a separate "Non-Steam Game" and to run it that way. While this will enable the Steam Overlay, it will also treat what you're launching as an entirely separate game, saving your screenshots to a different folder and so on.

As I'm sure this largely arbitrary distinction is unacceptable for many people (including myself), I have outlined below how you can run OBSE on Steam, with your Steam Overlay and without needing to add OBSE as a separate "game".
The Fix
Assuming you have already installed Oblivion Remastered and OBSE:

Right Click on Oblivion Remastered in Your Steam Library and select "Properties"
In the 'General' tab, paste the following into Launch Options:
"X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Remastered\OblivionRemastered\Binaries\Win64\obse64_loader.exe" -- %command%

with "X" being the drive Steam is located on ("C:", "D:" etc) and what is within the quotations being the path on your computer to the OBSE executable.

If you do not enter it as above, with the path to your OBSE launcher in quotations followed by -- and %command%, it will either not run OBSE or OBSE will return an error. For reference, the box in which you are pasting the above into looks like this:

PROTIP: If your Steam folder and/or OBSE launcher is located somewhere different than above, you can immediately copy and paste its location into your launch options by going to the OBSE launcher in your files, right clicking it and clicking "Copy as Path" Once you've done that, simply return to the launch options and hit your paste key for the entire address to immediately be entered.

Conclusion
If done properly, your game will now launch from Steam with OBSE enabled and you should have no issues opening your Steam Overlay, taking screenshots and so on.

I wasn't implying you shouldn't use it, just wondering if maybe the problem wasn't OBSE. I can't really troubleshoot your problem on my end but I can confirm that the fix above still works with the current version of Oblivion assuming no other problems.
If your Steam Overlay really still isn't appearing, it must be a different issue.

And you're certain OBSE is the culprit? Have you tried running the game with mods but without OBSE?

Can confirm the fix is still working with the most recent version of Oblivion Remastered and OBSE (as well as Reshade running).
You're launching the game through Steam, right? Not a mod manager? And OBSE itself is launching properly?

@RetroRaccoon542 I am still able to run OBSE with the Overlay as of July 12, 2025. Can you specify exactly what issue you're having?

Doesn't work anymore
