Introduction
Guide thumbnail by Pear.

There are several mod guides here already, but they're a bit outdated and point to mods that have since been outdone by others. I wanted to rectify that.

Half of the mods listed here are focused on replicating the original 2005 experience, both in visuals and in gameplay. The other half is focused on fixing what are nearly-unanimously considered flaws in the vanilla game, whether you're a new RE4 player or not. Nothing that changes the vanilla experience in extreme ways like Relentless Enemies, Dodge Roll/Sprint, Berserker, etc. All this is just ironing out the kinks and polishing the game into being the best it can be. These mods might even be enough to make you consider this a replacement for the original.
Essentials (Before anything else)
The following mods are important and essential for other mods to work. Install these before anything else to ensure compatibility.

Fluffy Mod Manager by FluffyQuack

Important mod manager for installing and uninstalling mods without manual file replacement and without having to worry about backups.

REFramework by praydog
.png]
REFramework is, as the name implies, a framework for mods. Most mods, especially modern ones, are made with it in mind and require it to work. Most of them will recommend downloading the latest nightly release, but do NOT do this. The latest stable build is already newer than almost any other mod on this list and as of writing, has far less issues.

Ultimate Trainer by Raz0r and Dante
.png]
This is NOT installed as a mod, but rather as a plugin for REframework. Basically, this acts as a debug menu and save editor. Some of its features don't work right, but some are still useful, especially for testing mods.

_ScriptCore by SilverEzredes
Required for a number of mods that use scripting. This is a core mod that you'll want to install first before anything else.

Skip Intro Movies by Ev3rgr33n
Skips over all the splash screens and company crap at the start so it goes straight to the title screen. Great for testing mods out quickly.

No RE Engine Intro by SADUSER5547
The above mod unfortunately doesn't cover the RE Engine logo, so this one takes care of that.

2005 Restoration (Gameplay)

The year is 2005. You just got home from seeing Revenge of the Sith. You load up MCR on your iPod and start playing Resident Evil 4 on your PS2.

Original Start Inventory by Alkimical
.png]
By default, Leon no longer has a laser sight. This ends up making the village fight a royal pain in the ass (especially on higher difficulties), and it doesn't even make sense in the story; why would a highly trained government agent tasked with rescuing the president's daughter be carrying no extra ammo and no accessories? It also highlights how irritating and inconsistent the focus mechanic is when you don't have a laser sight, which gives a terrible first impression of the game's combat.

This gives Leon his starting inventory at the start of the original game, which includes the laser sight, 20 extra bullets, and first-aid spray. This also frees up 10 spinels to spend elsewhere and more versatility for your first purchase (after all, you'd never not buy the laser sight first otherwise). There are also options for adding the shotgun & 15 shells at the start (based on the original Easy difficulty) and giving yourself infinite knife durability as well (not recommended). Recommended with the SG-09 Laser Sight (Model only) mod.

Kick Open Doors by alphaZomega
.png]
Don't you miss kicking open doors like a badass? This mod adds that back in, and it even does damage to enemies on the other side. It also comes with an option to allow you to do a melee kick at any time, but that's not recommended.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Broken Butterfly and RPG Treasure by LeonTheKennedy
.png].png]
Replaces two treasure chests in chapter 9 with these two weapons, letting you get them for free like in the original.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

iFrames by MrGrimaldus
In the original, you had iFrames when performing certain actions like melee attacks, climbing ladders, or vaulting over fences. In the remake, you don't, which can lead to a lot of unfair situations where you get blindsided when locked in an animation. This adds them back in with options for how long they last, making combat a bit less frustrating. It has two options: Limited and Full. Full adds iframes for knife takedowns, which is nice, but unfortunately it gives normal knife swings iframes as well, so I'd recommend only using Limited, which is the default.

Classic Gameplay by alteredbeast
In the remake, whether or not an enemy stops or staggers from a headshot/legshot is based on RNG rather than every time like the original. This mod restores the original consistent stagger. Headshots always stagger, legshots stagger more often (but not always), and bodyshots will usually at least interrupt an enemy's animation. Tougher elite enemies are still resistant to stagger, so the game isn't exactly a cakewalk, but personally I feel it messes with the balance too much. Check out Improved Weapon Balance for an alternative solution.

2005 Restoration (Cosmetic/Characters)
Leon Classic Style Outfit/Hair/Face/Eye Color by Rqsp
.png].png]
These mods bring back Leon's classic look with a face that more resembles the original, plus his original hair, eye color, outfit, jacket, and holster. Note that the hair may or may not work with hair strands on.

Ashley Classic Style Eye Color/Hair by flopity flips and UltraGamera
.png].png]
Classic Eye Color restores Ashley's original golden eye color, and they even become red when she gets infected. Classic Style Hair is her original 2005 do, but you'll need to turn off hair strands for it to work.

Ashley Skirt Fix + Jacketless Deluxe by NEGAARMAX and Pupa Purr
.png].png]
Skirt Fix gives Ashley's skirt proper physics, a new model, and new textures. Also comes with a TON of variants, all of which are sadly separate downloads. You'll want the base "Bare Legs" version for Jacketless Deluxe, an add-on that changes her outfit to resemble her 2005 look, with a thick brown belt and recolored scarf.

Ashley Romantic Crop Top by TrieuPham
.png]
Unfortunately, there's no mod for bringing back the Pop Star outfit from the original (beyond a model import), but you can get the next best thing by giving her Romantic outfit a crop top. You can even use Classic Style Hair with it.

Ada Wong Red Dress Reimagined by Konrad Majewski and EvilLord
.png].png]
This mod is a beautiful take on Ada's original dress with proper physics, and it alters her hair as well. This replaces the default outfit.

Assignment Ada Costume Remake by Lemi21 and Pupa Purr
.png]
.png]
A modern version of Ada's spy outfit. To keep it and the dress, I recommend replacing the in-game dress outfit with this. For the full classic look, turn elbow pads off. The second link is an add-on that recolors it to be closer to the original.

Hide Weapons by MurakumoKyo and Flashback
.png].png]
For a more classic look (and to get a better look at costume replacements) you can hide weapons on Leon and Ada's backs. You can also hide grenades if you want, though the original showed grenades.

Classic Luis Vest/Hair/Beard by linkthehylian and TrieuPham
.png]
.png]
The first mod pastes Luis's unlockable Vest outfit over the default, allowing you to use it in your first playthrough. It won't be necessary anymore once you unlock it for real. The second mod brings back his classic hair and beard. I actually like Luis's modern hair, but the beard makes him look too sleazy, so this is an overall improvement.

Skirt for Hunnigan by TrieuPham
.png]
Though she was never more than a head in OG, this restores her skirt from RE6.

Albert Wesker & Ada Wong Voice Replacement by ProMontréal, Destructo, and Mr. Voicebox
The voice acting in the original RE4 is iconic, and while I respect the remake's switch to a more realistic and cinematic feel, the new cast leaves a lot to be desired, with performances that don't fit the characters as well as they should. Ada and Wesker in particular were done SO dirty that a few modders and amateur voice actors took it upon themselves to completely redub them to sound closer to the originals, and IMO they sound much better. This in no way condones hate comments against the game's cast.

OG Shooting Range and Targets by Glitch
.png].png]
Don't care for the pirate theme in the new shooting range? Bring back the old one! This isn't just a reskin, it's a completely new environment. Even the merchant is there. Multiple options for target skins as well.

SG-09 with laser (model only) by Alkimical
.png]
This adds the laser sight to the base SG-09 model, allowing it to appear in cutscenes. Useful if using Original Start Inventory.

Red Herb Fix by MadMax
.png]
The "red" herbs in the game look more pink than red. This fixes that. You'll want the NoYellowPaint compatibility patch as well.

Classic Pesetas Sounds by DaNZ8
When "Original Music & SFX" is active, you get most of the original item sounds, but the memorable pesetas sound is left out. This mod fixes that by replacing the normal sound.

2023 Improvements (Gameplay)
Improved Weapon Balance by Andrew Creekmore
.png]
Some would argue that the consistent stagger of the original makes the game too easy/predictable/boring, and that the real issue with RE4make is the weapons being hideously underpowered and unbalanced at higher difficulties. For those people, Improved Balance is an extensive rework of weapons to fix that and make stagger more likely at the same time. It adds laser sight support for the Blacktail as well. The Full version comes with some nerfs, while the Lite version only includes buffs (I personally prefer the latter). It also has several optional add-ons, allowing you to tailor the difficulty to your specific needs.

Restored Hidden Path by MaxMaxLiS
.png]
This is interesting. So, you know that area in chapter 1 where enemies throw axes at you from a bridge and one of them jumps down from a ledge you can't get to? Turns out that's part of a fully functional alternate path leading to the lakeside settlement that was apparently cut from the game. This makes it explorable, with a few barrels thrown in.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Restored Cabin Door by 9t3ndo
.png]
The cabin is now accessible at chapter 1 with a few barrels to loot. An optional addon adds a free TMP guarded by a chainsaw sister, which gives it more substance, though it kinda spoils their grand debut later in the game.

Extras Unrestricted by WuhanBiohazard
.png]
By default, you can only change out costumes and swap to the original music on the main menu, meaning you can only do it between autosaves at best. This mod removes that restriction and allows you to change them whenever you want. (It's REALLY strange that this isn't in the vanilla game. It was obviously planned, too, since there are voicelines the characters make when switching outfits.)

Gacha Overhaul by KalivosGG
The gacha mechanics for winning charms from shooting galleries are, to put it bluntly, stupid as hell. It's very confusing and annoying how it works, especially since you can get duplicates. This overhauls the system completely by streamlining it so you'll never receive duplicates and once you get all charms, you'll earn other rewards instead.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Enhanced Manual Flashlight by SilverEzredes
By default, the flashlight turns on automatically in specific areas, but some areas are so dark you'll want one anyway. This lets you use it wherever with the push of a button (Z by default on keyboard). There are other mods that do this, but this is the only one that works with a controller. By default, it also has a mechanic where your battery drains and recharges over time, and flickers when low, which is pretty cool and can add a bit of horror, though I prefer to leave it off.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Holster On Command by SilverEzredes
Allows you to holster your gun manually (H by default on keyboard). It's a minor thing, but I like to holster when searching for items or solving puzzles. Incompatible with Kick Open Doors (causes crashes).
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Additional Save Slots by praydog
By default, the game only allows 20 save slots. This is very unnecessary and gets in the way if you like replaying specific sections of the game. This mod allows 100 saves.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Auto Save on Pro by chenstack
By default, the game doesn't let you auto save on professional. This is slightly frustrating for a casual run, and for an S+ run it's infuriating, as you can't reset the area when things go south, and the timer only resets when loading a save from the main menu, not the pause menu. Fix one (or both) with this mod.

Remove Photo Mode Distance Limitation by rt134
This removes distance restrictions in photo mode, allowing you to position the camera at any desired distance from the player. The original mod by NSACloud2 (which other mod guides will point you to) broke with the Separate Ways update, but this one works.
Download from Nexus[www.nexusmods.com]

Unlimited Photo Mode Distance With High Camera Move Speed by Null993
Same as above, but with higher camera move speed. Only use one or the other.

2023 Improvements (Cosmetic)
No Ugly Yellow Paint Everywhere by BonusJZ
.png].png]
My favorite mod. By default, the game marks barrels, windows, and other interactive objects with obnoxious yellow or white paint, which you can't turn off. It's insulting, both to your intelligence and the game's art style. This mod removes it and allows you to replace it with a much more sensible cult insignia on the boxes/barrels and blood splatter on ladders and floors. You can also replace the yellow paint with blood, or have nothing at all, but the former doesn't look good IMO and the latter makes them too difficult to notice.

If you intend to use this with Improved Crafting, you'll need to install this and/or Red Herb Fix first to prevent visual bugs.

Less Shiny Hair Leon - Luis by Solid Bohng
.png]
With hair strands off, Leon's hair looks clumpy, greasy, and gross. This helps alleviate that. There's also an option to do the same for Luis...though it makes sense for him to have greasy hair.

OG RE4 Beta Ashley Outfit by Glitch
.png].png]
Ashley's default outfit is nice, but I'm more partial to her RE3.5 beta design. This uses textures from the popular HD Project mod for the original, and comes with a lot of customization options as well.

Ashley - Casual Outfit - The Cure Shirt + Black/Emo Hair by Velkaer, Snipzu, and shinszin
.png].png]
The in-game Casual outfit is hideous. I imagine some old fogie at Capcom saying "How do you do, fellow kids?" and coming up with that stupid-looking Harley Quinn ripoff. You want a PROPER 2004 punk rocking goth girl? Check this out. Black sleeves, black lace tights, actual band shirt, unf. That's how you do it. Doesn't come with the black hair by default, so the second link is the black hair used in the thumbnail. Alternatively, the third link has much prettier emo hair with purple highlights, but you'll have to turn on hair strands for it.

Show Weapons by MurakumoKyo & Flashback
.png]

By default, only Leon and Ada's default outfits display weapons on their backs. This mod allows them to display on every alt they have. Note that this is incompatible with mods that replace said alts, such as Assignment Ada Remake and Leon Classic Style Jacket.

SG-09 to Sentinel 9 by BlooCobalt
.png]
If you prefer using the Sentinel 9 over the SG-09 and wish Leon would use it in cutscenes instead, fear not! This mod reskins the SG-09 so it will always appear as your weapon of choice. Comes with an optional laser sight as well.

Flashbang Fixed - RE2R Texture by ErnestJugend and NEGAARMAX

The default flash grenade model is kinda ugly, with an ugly font as well. This one looks cooler, more realistic, and more consistent with RE2R.
