How to play as Firelight

What's the Firelight?
In Midnight Race Club: Supercharged (the bonus content) the 4th available car option is a yellow sports car called Firelight. However, selecting it causes the game to crash. In this guide I'll show you how to mod the game to be able to use the Firelight in a race.
So, why does this happen?
We can figure this out through the r3dlog.txt file. This is a file the game creates every time it opens and logs basically everything the game does, from loading menu screens, models, textures, generating textures when it can't find specific ones and even recording your car's position and speed in a race.

You'll find r3dlog.txt in the game's local folder, (your drive):\(your steam folder)\steamapps\common\Big Rigs Over the Road Racing\Bonus. When you click it, scroll all the way down and you'll find the key element to Firelight's problem:

r3dFile: Can't open Data\Cars\MR\MR.mat MatLib: can't open Data\Cars\MR\MR.mat

The game tries to find MR.mat, the file in charge of setting values to the car's textures, and it can't, so the game crashes.
Let's fix it!
In order to solve this, we have to get the game's assets. Most of the assets the game calls are in a file called Carz.res, which can also be found in the same folder as r3dlog.txt. Find it, copy it elsewhere, rename the copy's extension to .zip, and unzip it like any other zip file.

Unzipping Carz.res, you'll find what is basically an earlier version of MRC:S, and a full Data folder where there used to be three folders (Fonts, Images and Menu). Follow the path seen in r3dlog.txt, and you'll find the car's .mat file, MR_.mat. The reason why the game can't find it is because of the underscore at the end of the name. The game tries to find MR.mat, without an underscore, and since it's not an exact match, the game crashes.

Rename MR_.mat to MR.mat, and boot the game. You'll be able to use the Firelight!

However, you'll probably notice the weird purple tint on the window. And it's not just on the window, the wheels are gonna be iridescent too. This is the game generating its own textures as placeholders for textures it can't find. While the car is perfectly functional, you can fix this if you care about getting the true Firelight experience.
Fixing the textures
Going back to r3dlog.txt, by scrolling through you'll find the following messages:

r3dFile: Can't open Data\Cars\MR\rim_stock.bmp r3dTexture: Texture [64x64] created Material: Material Rims loaded, ID: 238 r3dFile: Can't open Data\Cars\MR\rim_stock.bmp r3dTexture: Texture [64x64] created Material: Material wheeldisk loaded, ID: 239 r3dFile: Can't open Data\Cars\MR\tread01.bmp r3dTexture: Texture [64x64] created Material: Material treads loaded, ID: 240

The game tries to find rim_stock.bmp and tread01.bmp, but it can't, so it generates placeholder textures. You'll find that these textures are nowhere to be found in the MR folder, but the ZZ (Tornado) folder has them. Copy them into MR, and run the game again. This time, everything will load perfectly!

Unfortunately I don't know how to make this work on the Steam executable. Maybe the developers could re-add the Firelight in an update! For now, enjoy the Firelight.
