Intro
This guide isn't going to give you all the answers. I want you all to experience the game as spoiler free as possible. But sometimes you get stuck and need a little nudge in the right direction.

I don't like using bugs or exploits, so I won't be listing them here. This guide is a work in progress.
I prefer to confirm stuff for myself if I can, this way I can also provide screen shots.

Controls

For PC:
Up: W
Down: S
Left: A
Right: D
Dash: Left Shift (I recommend turning on "Always Dash" in the options)
Accept: E / Left Click
Cancel: X / Right Click
Inventory: Esc

Fullscreen: F4
Reload: F5
Screenshot: F12

You can also navigate with a mouse or touch controls. If you are using a Steamdeck the default controls work as a mouse but you can go into controller settings > edit layout > action sets > click on the gear icon for default > add always on command > add command > touch the system tab at the top > select "Touch Screen Native Support". This will fully enable touch screen support for the game removing the mouse cursor from the screen.

A few noticeable quirks about the controls.
The cancel button doesn't always cancel specifically when making a choice and will just go through with the default choice as though once you've started the process you can't back out. For instance if you are selecting a second ingredient when cooking a meal, if you right click/press x it wont cancel it will instead respond as though you selected the option "nothing". Something similar happens when asking a roommate to join or leave the party. So be prepared to when making food at the oven.

When using touch screen or mouse controls you have to wait until Sam moves in position in front of what you want to interact with and click it again to be able to interact with certain things like the video the game console, the oven, etc.. This is such an issue that when a friend of mine played he didn't know you could play video games initially because he was only using the mouse and I had to tell him to walk in front of it and press E on the keyboard. This is only an issue for touch and mouse controls and is especially bad with the touch controls.

Sometimes the game remembers your input before the text completes resulting in making a decision in a conversation without meaning to. When talking to someone take your time and wait until the text has finished.
Stats
Some of these are pretty self explanatory

HP: Health points
STM : Stamina
Ammo: Ammo for currently equipped ranged weapon
Attack: Damage with melee weapons
Defense: Melee Defense
Ballistics: Damage with ranged weapons
Bull.Defense: Bullet Defense
Agility: Initiative and Evasion
Luck: Critical hit chance, Loot drop chance and Chance to be inflicted by a status effect.
Hidden Stats/Mechanics

Here are some hidden features that I've seen but can only speculate on.

Calm/Anxiety: If your Calm stat drops too low you get anxiety. When you have anxiety it's speculated that you gain less EXP. This is not confirmed.
You can calm yourself by showering and playing Video Games in the living room or on your Laptop.

Morale: No one is currently sure how low morale effects game play. Playing Video Games and sharing food with roommates can restore Morale. (note that not all video games or social interactions restore Morale.)

Social/Loneliness: I'm not sure but there are speculations that you can become lonely without social interactions. I don't know how this would effect game play. You can gain Social+ from Social Media on your Laptop and eating with Roommates

Hunger: The game lets you know when you're getting hungry. I'm not sure how often it is, and I don't know what happens if you refuse to eat.
Filling: Determines how much of your hunger meter is filled when eating? This is a very hard one to track. I'm not even sure if it works like you think it would or not.

Hygiene:
BadBreath: We're not sure what bad breath currently does. Probably lowers a stat? Might effect haggle prices? You can remove the Bad breath effect by Brushing your teeth or using Gum.
+8 Hygiene with Toothpaste
+1 Hygiene without
+? Gum

Smelly: When you are Smelly it lowers a stat. It's not confirmed which one but it's speculated that it's Agility or Luck. Also might effect haggle prices? You can remove the smelly effect by Showering.
With Soap the shower provides Calm +10, Hygiene +60 and Morale +4.
Without the shower provides Calm +?, Hygiene +? and Morale +?.

When you shower Sam reflects on various things you have done or played.
This is usually a video game and/or a side quest/event.
When a quest or event is mentioned in the shower it may act as a sort of hint system.
When a video game is mentioned while showering the game is letting you know you still have a skill to gain from playing it.

Critical Hit: Just so everyone is aware, critical hits are at 1.8x Damage. Not sure if a critical hit ignores defense or not.

Evasion: Is definitely a stat but not much information is known about it. Based on Agility and Luck?

Laptop:
  • Check the news. (This is never helpful, even for lore.)
  • Check social media. +Social -Calm (Some lore)
  • Play games. +Calm (I don't do this much)
I hope the laptop has a better use at some point. So far it's disappointing.

Plant:
The game will mention the Plant in your room from time to time. You can water it and talk to it. If anyone knows what this accomplishes let me know.

If you water if enough when you talk to it Sam will ask if you want to move the plant closer to the window for light. It starts resembling a flay trap. Ominous.
Save!
Always save!
Be smart about when you are saving your game. Make sure you have done all the things you want to do and are fully prepared to leave your apartment when you save. Craft the items you want and make sure you're fully equipped. Shower, brush your teeth, or make some food THEN save. Trust me this saves a lot of time.

15 days
The game has a Day/Night cycle and keeps time via Military Time[militarytimechart.com].

The game claims that you simply have to wait for 15 days for this all to blow over. I'm not sure it's that simple. You can check the calendar in your room at anytime to check how many days are left.

Things to consider:

  • It seems fairly straight forward, the only requirement seems to be that you have to sleep at night if you are in your apartment.
  • Some events take a certain amount of days. For instance it takes a day or so for the colony of roaches to start communicating with you.
  • Some events may be triggered by on certain days, the janitors location depends on what day you find him. Joel's apartment doesn't open for a day or two.
  • I would assume something special happens at night, but who knows.
Tips and tricks.
Here Ill be listing some tips and some quirks of the game.

There are multiple endings, that being said...

YOU CAN SOFT LOCK YOURSELF OUT OF ENDINGS. This game lets you play it however you want, that includes letting you kill yourself by hugging a monster that can't help but attack everything around it. (he really looked like he needed a hug...)

If you get stuck try taking a shower and talking to Sybil. You may get the hints you need.

Weapon Specials (this includes reloading)
Most weapons have their own Specials associated with them. Most notably "Reload" is a ranged weapon "Special" but note that you have to have ammo or the option will not appear. Here is an example of trying to reload with no ammo:

I'll be listing all the weapons later and this will be flushed out more with more examples.

Answering your door statistically is more beneficial than not opening it. If you're nice other people will be nice too.

If your party get infected. Use Disinfectant to cure the Infection before it transforms into Disease

Don't judge others based on how they look.

Don't use pennies on vending machines. They're better used in the basement.

Don't sell weapons or gear. You'll need them. You don't really need the money anyways.

Use the throwing cutlery and plates as much as you need to in the beginning. They're not good later on and take up space. (Not that you have an inventory limit they just clutter things up.)

The game is far easier with a full party.

The Special Nitro Boost is awesome, learned from Madwheels 97.

Try to multiplayer any games you play if you can to maximize EXP gains.

Dan's Special Bless is also awesome.

Duct Tape repairs weapons and it's fairly cheap at Eugene's.

Don't forget to make sandwiches and eat them. This also applies to snack and drink items. Don't forget you have them. That being said, bread was sort of hard to get a hold of. Keep that in mind.

Don't give Rafta's love letter to Nestor unless you've saved first.

Isn't it strange that you would have to send a party member home to gain a new one?

Acid Flasks🧪 are OP AF. HAVING BOSS PROBLEMS? NOTHING THAT 3 OR 4 ACID FLASKS CAN'T HANDLE!! 🫠
Video Games and Skills
Playing games gives you Exp, Calm, and passes time. Depending on the game, it can give you positive or negative morale. When you play the same game enough times Sam gains a skill. Below is a list of the games recorded so far, I will update with locations and other info later. Any help is appreciated.

Playing Video Games is a great way to pass time in game and passing time is a good way to get visitors. Playing a game that Sam is interested in seems to pass 2 hours of time. This goes down to 1 hour or even 30 minutes of time passed when Sam gets bored, depending on the game.

Playing games with roommates.
Some Videos Games (maybe all games) can be played with roommates. So long as you have a roommate present when you play the game it will trigger the interaction. Playing games with roommates gives the roommate EXP. I'm not sure if this is always true, as sometimes the roommate will express disliking or being disturbed by a game. For example Xaria hated it when I played Octocook, and Dan throws a controller when playing Madwheels 97. Or like with The crossword game, I don't think EVERYONE is getting EXP for helping find a solution.
Some of the Interactions are recorded in this wiki[look-outside.fandom.com].

Side note about the multiplayer notes. When I was making this guide I had 6 roommates. (Dan, Leigh, Monty, Rat Baby Thing (Bart), Sophie, and Xaria.) So some of the multiplayer notes are marked unknown because I didn't have the roommates for those games.

Slime Cannibal: Blood Renaissance
A game that Dan claims he is making?
Knock Knock! You have a visitor!
Always answer the door! Well, almost always.
Visitors are a randomly generated encounters, some are listed them below.
To get visitors you have to pass time in your apartment. A good way to get visitors is to play games since you get EXP and eventually a "Special". (sometimes i may refer to them as a skill)

Trader Visitors:
Curio Trader - Has Jewelry and Accessory items that you can't find anywhere else.
Food Trader - Food items.
General Trader - All sorts of basic stuff.
Gun Trader - Has really powerful guns for a lot of money.
Medical Trader - Healing items and Crafting items.
Scrap Scavenger - Takes scrap. (Trader and possible roommate.)
Sports Gear Trader - Weapons and Armor. Has really good Head Gear.
Video Game Trader - This guy is rare. He may only appear on certain days?

Roommate Visitors:
Dan the creep
Ernest the bum
Montgomery & Xaria the Punk and Goth
Hellen the psychopath
Morton the Scrap Trader
Sophie the lost child

More info in the Roommates section.

Other Visitor Events:
Nothing: Always open the door if this happens, there will be a random item on the ground. (Energy Drink, Batteries, Simple Key, Machete)
I'm pretty sure this is your next door neighbor in apartment 31, seems like a nice guy. Before the incident that lead to him becoming the Stargazer he was helping Jasper and his group.

Pizza Guy: Will sell you different pizzas for different prices. All of them are great deals.
Cheese Pizza $4
Fresh Pizza (mine was pineapple pizza) $12
Rotting Pizza $6
You can tip him $1 - $6 or not. I'm not sure if this serves any purpose. But I suspect if you give him a good tip he has a higher chance of coming back. This could potentially be a bad thing if you're trying for other visitor interactions.

Stressed-out man: Needs medical help! Sometimes when you open the door the man will be a monster. I've seen two different guys both asked for a medical item relating to their injury. Each injury has 2 different items that can be used to satisfy the mans paranoia. The man will always give you $120 regardless of the item you give him. If your choices are Meds or an Antidote, choose the cheaper option. I'm not sure if giving the more expensive item serves any purpose.
  • William was bit and needs Meds or an Antidote.
  • There was another guy that only needed Disinfectant but I'm sure Medicell or Tonic would have worked too.

Hostile Visitors:

Dan - Sometimes he's hostile
Scrap scavenger "Morton" - Sometimes he's hostile
Stressed-out - man can sometimes appear as a monster when you open the door.
Harriot, Sophie's Mother - If you don't help Sophie

No one can say why they become hostile or if it's permanent or just a one off. I'll notate their justifications if there are any.

Food Items and oven recipes:
The amount of HP and STM you get from meals depends on the meal and if you're splitting it with roommates and possibly how many roommates. Around day 10 I was splitting meals with 6 roommates, my party members and I were only getting 15 Hp from the meals at this point. (this is why I didn't include HP and STM amounts to the crafted foods below)

Rotting food just means that it's not as effective and it loses the STM restore bonus. Eating rotting food (in my experience) does not harm the player. Eat it if you need to restore some HP.

Roommates (Party Members)
As far as I know, you don't strictly need to have any roommates to play the game. But it does make it much easier. The trade off is that when you make food, you are now splitting the food with your roommates. So the more roommates the more food you need and the more food you need to cook at one time to make an impact on HP or STM. This isn't very noticeable as long as you're raiding fridges, but you may need to buy food occasionally.

When you make a meal and split it with your roommates there is a chance it will trigger a social event. This can range from Monty belching loudly after the meal to Leigh teaching Sophie how to properly stab something. Some events can give you morale, I've heard there are a couple bad events. There are a lot of them and it would take a lot of time and effort to record them all.

Also something to consider, there are only 4 roommates that you are guaranteed to recruit Joel, Leigh, Papaineu and Baby Rat Thing. The rest are random.

Here's a list of roommates that knock on your door:

Dan:
Knocks on your door. Creepy guy that likes games, let him hang out. When Dan Knocks on the door there is a chance he will become hostile depending on Days passed or RNG. (no one is sure atm)

Ernest:
Knocks on your door. A bum begging for food, reluctant to come inside your apartment. Feed him 3 times and you will be able to recruit him to your party.

Hellen:
Knocks on your door. If you have the baby rat in your apartment there will be a scene when interacting with the rat where she will exchange her hockey mask for a kids drawing so that the rat isn't as scared of her. (has looked outside)

Montgomery & Xaria:
Knocks on your door. They need a place to crash, don't be weird about it.

**Morton the Scrap Trader:
Knocks on your door. If you give him enough scrap he can be recruited to your party. He has a chance of being hostile, you may have to recruit him before this happens. It may be possible to ignore his hostile encounter to later have a non-hostile encounter. (I'm pretty sure he's looked outside.)

Sophie:
Her mother Harriet knocks on your door looking for her daughter with a sling shot, be nice to her. Later Sophie will knock on your door asking to you to help her find her Harriet. If you reunite Sophie with her mother, she will leave your party and you'll be given Strong medication items in return.(**I have not found Harriet yet)

Roommates recruited through other means:

**Colony of Roaches:
Throughout the game you will run into roaches. You'll see them run into you and Sam will stop for a second. You will start getting notifications like "You feel something on your neck" or "Something is moving in your bag". When this happens it means you are infested with roaches and will find them in your inventory. When they are selected you can kill them, release them or do nothing. They will leave your inventory when you enter your apartment. You'll see them scurrying about, you can grab them and have the option to pet the roach. After petting them for a couple days you'll see a roach carrying a little note. Another day or so later a roach will give you a note asking to leave out food. No one is sure if roaches have anything to do with hygiene at the moment.

Joel:
Give him the Teddy bear during combat through the item screen, and hug him. Talk to him again and tell him, "You can't stay here" and he will either join your party or go to your apartment. You may have to defeat his mother before he comes with you. To recruit him you have to be truthful and tell him you're his neighbor.

Leigh:
If you beat the Grinning creature on Floor 2 instead of running from it,
it then appears in Apartment 23 (unlabeled, no door) as Leigh the merchant. You can recruit Leigh by talking to her. There are reports that on Easy mode Leigh bugs out after defeating her and the door to her apartment stays closed. (Leigh has looked outside. Leigh really creeps me out.)

Papaineu:
He is hanging out in the janitors closet on the Ground Floor. Nice guy, very serious about his job. Some people say you can find him in the Mens Restroom on days 1-4, allowing you to get him without needing to get the janitors key. It may just be random, we're not sure.

Phillippe:
Joins you in the mold area in the basement. Just look at this guy! Isn't he adorable!

Rat Baby Thing aka "Bart":
Can be found on Floor 1 (Hallway 1 Section 3). Even if you choose to keep it Sam will abandon it. It follows you and makes it's way into your inventory. Once Room 13 has been dealt with, return to your apartment and the Rat Baby Thing will leave your inventory and become your pet. If you interact with it enough you can recruit it as a party member. How could you hate a face like that? He's just a little guy! Da'www

Non combatant roommates:

Tame Landmine aka "Betty":
I got this little cutie this from the Landlords Apartment. Betty just likes roaming around in my bedroom like a Roomba. She stays in your inventory as a "Tame Landmine" that you can you use during battle: "Betty adorably chirps and beeps in your hands. She deals 150 blast damage to one random enemy." If you use Betty... I'm judging you.

**Shadow:
This guy will pop up occasionally and will slowly follow you. If you leave the room and come back It's gone.
The first time you talk to him he wants food.
The second time he just acts creepy.
And the third time he gave me a still warm tongue.
4th time he gives you a Rose
At some point you will find him in your bedroom.
He will try somethings and tell him not to and to respect your space. (i'm paraphrasing)
Discs
So there are Discs that have planet names on them, and the number of moons the planet has is the value of the disc. You find this out from a poster in room 35? Some doors require a combination of discs to open. Doesn't seem too complicated if you're taking notes.

Moons per Planet

Mercury = 0
Venus = 0
Earth = 1
Mars = 2
Pluto = 5
Sun = 13
Neptune = 16
Uranus = 28
Jupiter = 95
Saturn = 146

And then there's
Negative = -10

The void disc is used to make the negative disc.

Floor 1 Maze
The maze isn't all that complicated. It's a set mapped out area, but you can keep going in the same direction over and over mostly. I've noticed going north or south at certain hallway sections will jump you around other sections of other hallways. Like at the Elevator, if you go down you end up back up at Hallway 1 section 2 where the meat door is. But the door sequence doesn't seem to change from hallway to hallway, the sections seem to always be in order horizontally.

Note, all of my instructions are going left and down from the stairwell. So hallway 2 is the first one down, hallway 3 the second. If I say Hallway 2 section 2, Starting from the stairwell it would be down one to Hallway 2, left twice to Section 2.

When you get to Floor 1 for the first time it will be through Rafta's pipe room, be careful not to run into...

Rat King
By the way, a Rat King wanders the halls of Floor 1 and drops the Rusty Crown once defeated. The Rusty Crown allows you to talk to rats, or it at least makes them friendly. (I think they could talk anyways) This is important because I believe (I beat him first so i don't know) that without the crown you may have to fight all the rats? Or maybe they just don't talk to you? Gotta play through a second time.

Hallway 1 (You start here at the stairwell)
Stairwell (always at the far right end of Hallway 1)
Section 1 (Going Left)
Apartment 13 (Feed me Seymour!)
Meat Door Apartment
Section 2
Empty Hallway
Section 3
"Jasper's Letter" Room (leads to Hallway 2 Section 2)
Rat Infested Apartment (with Rat Baby Thing)
Section 4
Elevator (It's always at the far left end of Hallway 1)
This hallway can't loop because of the elevator and stairwell.

Hallway 2 (Down 1 from stairwell.)
Section 1 (Going Left)
Painters Apartment (the door with the grate outside it)
Aurelius' Room (it's pretty small for an apartment)
Section 2
Rafta the Pipe lady (This room leads to Lyles Apartment 21)
"Jasper's Letter" Room (Leads to Hallway 1 Section 3)
This hallway now loops.

Hallway 3 (Down 2 from staiwell)
Section 1 (Going left)
Apartment 11 (needs the Earth disc?)
Overgrowth Apartment (You get the video game "Frogit about It" here)
Section 2
Hall of locked doors. Third door from the right on the top has a 👁️ Simple Key.
This hallway now loops.

North/South hallway door. (Out of the two, this is the only one that opens)
Rat infested Apartment (It's south from the stairwell. You can't miss it.)
Apartment 34 the Frozen Apartment

There are Ice blocks blocking your path and the apartment has 3 Ice Melt Salt each Ice Melt Salt has 4 uses. You can find another Ice Melt Salt in the Janitors Closest on the ground Floor just right of the Bus, and another behind a Meat door in the basement to the left of the friendly group. All together giving you 20 Ice Melt Salts uses.

Boss:
Molotov's and Acid Flasks🧪 are highly effective (about 3-4 will take it down), if you can use them. This guy will use an ice attack that will freeze your your whole party for a lot of damage. If you are struggling with this boss you can buy the Sapphire Ring from the Curio Trader and there is armor with cold protection at Eugene's shop.
Which Fred is the real Fred?
First try exploring the entire apartment and talk to all of the Fred's.

Here is a hint: The room right of the first room is the easel room where the painting was painted. Notice how when you defeat a Fred it turns back into a painting in the easel room, count the frames in the easel room. There is one more Fred than there are frames.

The painting:
What color paint is on the floor of the easel room? The painting case is dropped when you FACE the right Fred.

Fred that bites dialog recorded in this wiki[look-outside.fandom.com].
Endings
There is a scoring system. I didn't expect that at all.

Got the "No Going Back" ending

These are just notes for later.
Questions to the community (spoilers)

Everyone is saying that the Tranquilizer for Fred that hurts people doesn't exist and this makes me sad. Poor Fred that hurts people, he seems like a nice guy if it wasn't for the... you know.

I could have sworn I got an item called Antibiotics. But if i did it may have been the only one. I may just have misread it and it was just an antidote. Can anyone confirm the Antibiotic item?

Rafta's Love Letter is for Nestor on the Ground Floor in the mens restroom? What does this do? That's wild. I'm totally doing that haha

After killing some shadow monsters named "?" I obtained a Black Ooze, you can give to one of your party members...
I fed it to Sam, I didn't notice anything. Maybe you have to eat more? Maybe some days have to go by? 🤷‍♂️
**Update You can craft with the Black Ooze? Interesting.

I noticed when looting I get items that have a treasure box icon to the left of the description. Can we sell these items? Do the items like "Teddy Bear or Army Figure" have this icon? If not we should be able to freely sell these items. I've been hording them. I ask because some of the "treasure" items sell for only $1 insinuating that you should hold onto it. Like this one:

Doing testing for this one soon. It's bothering me.

Which manuscript is the right one? Not the clean one and not the crumpled one, you have to add the note from the desk.**

Guinea pig
it's for an ending, I haven't looked it up yet

Now that I've beat the game, I'll be spoiling more of the game for myself.

Thanks for the guide. Just got back into this one and I think I have the roommate mechanics worked out. I let the two jointed bros leave my party accidentally because they are gone now. I miss clicked the button , didn’t think it was that easy to let go of them. Sofie joined. Janitors closet is locked but I’m working on that secret.

Pluto is officially a planet.
FairyHunterSlab 21 Apr @ 9:03am
I don't think mines respawn, but if you trigger one and outrun it, you can go to where it re-burrows and disarm it.

Any idea if the mines respawn? I can't find anymore and I really want betty

Incredible guide, thank you so much! Sophie knocked on my door before her mother, I think they're both random

Joel can be recruited if you say you are a friend. He doesn't like doctors. My guess is that 'friend' and 'neighbor' work, but 'doctor' and 'stranger' do not.

Thank you for making this! I got the duet ritual because I messed up on the manuscript and the VHS. Note, don't change the camera feed.

I'd like to fill in a few small gaps-- Upon first getting the black sludge, I attempted to consume it as Sam and I was immediately reduced to 0 HP. It didn't end the game or anything, I just got KO'd. A medkit fixed me up. Furthermore, you can play Jumplad with Joel, and you can notice Joel won't care about the wizard-torture game.

I did wanna ask, I got a stun baton from Mutt's, and even though I had six batteries, I couldn't put a single one into the baton after it ran out of charge. Does anyone know how to recharge it? Thank you in advance!

How do you craft with the black ooze? I have it but it's not showing up in the crafting menu. Is there anything I can use it for other than just taking a party member to near-death?
Trusty 13 Apr @ 6:40am
Is there a way to deal with room 13 without losing something on the way?
