Steam Workshop Part 3 - Flags and Voices
By Mostly Hairless µC ⛳
From version 1.20 it's possible to add custom flag images and voice sets to Super Video Golf. This guide covers how to use the included Workshop tools to import and upload your own. It's recommended to read Part 1 first, if you haven't already.

Introduction
In the third part of the Workshop guide we'll look at how to import images for flags, and audio to be used in voice sets. It's recommended to read at least the first Workshop guide, which you can find here, before continuing, to familiarise yourself with the Workshop tools in general.
Importing Flag Images
Importing images for use as pin flags follows the same principles as other asset imports, however it is slightly simplified due to the fact that the only media you need to prepare is a suitable image.

When creating an image for use as a pin flag you can use any image editing software you like. Images will look best with a 4:3 aspect ratio and can be any resolution, but will be auto-sized to fit the flag on import.

When you save your image from your image editor you should use png as the file format.

Once you have familiarised yourself with the Workshop tools (read the first part of this series here, if you haven't already) open the Workshop tools window, and select the Flag tab.

The basic process is as follows:
  1. Import the image you wish to use by clicking Import and browsing for the image file.
  2. Export the image to the Workshop directory and give it a name, using the Export button
  3. OR Open an existing image which was Exported using the first two steps.
  4. Optionally select Preview Number to display the number on the flag. This is for preview only, it doesn't affect the exported item, as this property can be set in the Options menu of Super Video Golf.
  5. Select Dark if you want to preview the number with black ink, else leave it unselected to preview with white.
  6. Publish the flag to the Steam Workshop.

The last point is required if you wish to preview the flag in-game. If you're not ready to share the image yet, make sure to set the Workshop visibility property to *Private*. You can switch the visibility to public or private at any time once the item is published, by viewing the item's Workshop page in Steam.

Creating a Voice set
Preparing Your Media
Voice sets are used in-game to allow a player's profile to express themselves vocally when reacting to a shot. The Steam Workshop supports creating voice sets of up to nine unique audio clips, each of which not exceeding 2.5 seconds in length.

Audio clips need to be saved in the standard *.wav format, with 2 audio channels and ideally 44.1Khz or 48Khz sample rate. To create such files you can use free software like Audacity[www.fosshub.com], but any audio editing software will do. It's also recommended to normalize the volume level[manual.audacityteam.org] to approximately -3.4dB. This prevents the audio being too loud and potentially from being too quiet.

TIP:
If you're looking to recreate the '16 bit' lo-fi effect which the Super Video Golf voices use, try running your voice clips through a bitcrusher effect. I used Tone Booster's Time Machine - the preset for which you can see here:

Voice sets can have up to 9 audio clips, but only require one at minimum. However, as these clips are played in reaction to the game in hand, the more variation in voices there are the more likely it'll fit with the game. The following unique events in-game can trigger voice clips:

  • Bunker - The ball landed in a bunker
  • Fairway - The ball landed on the fairway
  • Green - The ball landed on the green
  • Celebrate - The player scored a Hole in One, or won a match, skins or NTP+ hole
  • Hook - The player hooked the ball
  • Rough - The ball landed in the rough
  • Scrub - The ball landed in the trees
  • Slice - The player sliced the ball
  • Water - The ball landed in the water

Once your media is prepared you can import it into the game by opening the Workshop tools, and clicking the Voice tab.

Importing Your Media

First choose an audio slot to which to assign a clip and click Load(1). By default the first file you open will be assigned to all of the slots. You can continue to add more audio clips by clicking on each of the Load buttons for each slot to which you wish to assign audio. Pressing Play(2) on any of the slots will preview the audio file through the default playback device on your computer.

Once you have assigned all of your audio clips give the voice set a name by filling out the Name box, and click Save(3) to save the set to your computer. Once the voice set is saved you can open it again at any time by loading the Workshop tools and clicking Open(4) which will allow you to browse existing voice sets that you have previously saved.

If you wish to create multiple voice sets you can use the New button after saving the current set to reset the Workshop tools window, and create a new set.

Finally, as with other mods, you must publish your voice set to the Steam Workshop(5) if you wish to hear the voice set in-game. Remember to set it to *Private* if you do not want to publicly share the voice set just yet.

You can open any previously saved voice sets, load new audio clips, save and then re-publish them again at any time if you want to edit the voice selection. When you're ready to share your voice set either with friends or publicly, head on over to the Workshop page for your item and use the Change visibility button on the right hand side.
