This guide details when each mastery and mastery set is first available and researchable. There is a separate section for masteries not available until the very end of the game, and help on masteries that are hard to find.
This guide will help you know whether you can get a particular mastery, but not exactly where you find them (except for the aforementioned rare masteries).

Introduction
Have you ever wondered whether you need to keep progressing through the story before you can get the mastery required for a set or researching a class mastery? Sometimes you can find it by just searching through the troublemaker list, but only if you have enough information on them. And it's not a mastery that has to be obtained by raising a beast. And it's from a person who is, in fact, in the troublemaker list.

If you're not looking for the exact place where a mastery can be obtained, but rather just whether you could have unlocked it, this first part of the guide is for you.

This will hopefully also make it more clear when you can start using each mastery set, so you don't have to cross reference a bunch of different lists to figure out whether you can put Second Wind on Albus during your solo run yet.

I consider a mastery obtainable in a given chapter if it's obtainable before starting the first story mission of the next chapter. So if a violent mission is unlocked after completing the eighth story mission in chapter five, all masteries in it are considered available in chapter five.

Now these masteries are not always intuitively obtainable in that chapter. Sometimes you need to beat up Leton in Ramjist Plaza, raise a frog you don't actually want when you could wait for a chapter instead, or fight a specific team in joint training. Or equip Cheerful Move to Martial Artist Irene so you can trigger a bunch of Finales chapters before you can actually use the mastery you unlock.

And not every mastery can be researched in the chapter it's unlocked, no matter what you do! Magic Duplication is only researchable in chapter 3 when you can finally obtain Trace On, regardless of whether or not Sion has spent any time as a Battle Mage. These masteries are denoted by a strikethrough. At the end of each chapter, those masteries that can now conceivably be researched are listed. (I only consider a mastery researchable if you can research it without any specific masteries in your inventory. I haven't looked into it, but it's plausable that you could obtain the middle mastery from an enemy without having the mastery that it needs, in which case you'd be able to research the top mastery as many times as you have the middle masteries. You won't find that information here.)

Finally, I have determined which masteries are "rare" by my own esoteric methods. I have included a list of these masteries and their locations at the end of the guide. You should hopefully be able to encounter the other masteries without any more help.

Masteries first appearing in Chapter I
Chapter 1 contains a lot more masteries than it should because of Ramjist Plaza, where you can fight Ray, Leton, Irene, Bianca, and/or Alisa if you want to. I debated ignoring that—as beating, for example, Alisa before reaching Chapter 2 is fairly unrealistic—but it is technically possible.
Instead of either completely excluding it or giving no information on where they can be otherwise obtained, masteries where which are otherwise not found in Chapter I are in italics. sets in italics in later chapters require a mastery obtained here. They are later included where they would otherwise first be obtained followed by (R).
If a mastery would be unresearchable without beating up your friends in Ramjist Plaza, it will be followed by (Z).
