Benign Anomalies of the Zone
By Yail Bloor
The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone is host to wide variety of anomalies, not all of which are harmful. There are many cases of benign anomalies; that is, anomalous formations that are, by all appearances, harmless to stalkers. Consider this article a guided tour of these benign anomalies as they have been discovered and mapped across the zone.

Lesser Zone
Fault
• You've all seen the fault. You wouldn't be here if you hadn't passed through the gaping hole in the perimeter wall, rent asunder and frozen in space by a bright blue beam of light. If you think the fault is impressive, just wait 'till you see what the zone has in store for you, rookie.

Garbage
Glow
• West of Hlynka, in Garbage, there is a bridge. North of that bridge, there is a glow. That's it. A strange, disembodied green glow that emits from several spots on the ground. Moving on.

Mosaic Tendrils
• This anomaly is found on the east-facing wall of the Factory in southern Garbage. Tiles peel from the wall, reaching and twisting like tendrils, drifting this way and that as they ride whatever unseen zephyrs that guide their tranquil, hypnotic movements.
Cement Factory
Safe Island
• Located west of Slag Heap, a collection of safes lies abandoned on a small patch of land surrounded by a moat. Things seem peaceful here; the zone is quiet, and fragments of paper drift about on invisible eddies, lending a blissful, enchanted air to the island. It really feels like a safe space. Until you're jumped by a group of bandits. There are no safe spaces in the zone, rookie. Get your head out of your ass.

WiFi
• Spanning the road south of the Intercom Tower in Cement Factory, three sets of utility poles hover in the air, broken off at the base and floating weightless in space. Though no power source can be seen, random arcs of electricity confirm the lines are indeed live. Vulture says you can charge your PDA if you stand next to it. Vulture is also known to loot the bodies of gullible rookie stalkers who fall for bad advice, so grain of salt.

Wild Island
Suspended Debris
• This anomaly can be found at the Pontoon Depot on Wild Island. This random assortment of refuse hangs suspended in the air, apparently unrelated to a nearby poltergeist haunt. Touching an object will break the spell and cause it to fall to the ground, so don't ruin it for the next guy, rookie.

Floating Trees
• Located in the south-westernmost part of Wild Island, a cluster of three trees, ripped from the very ground, float several feet above the ground. What's really strange is that the trees seem to be still alive. If you're quiet, and you pay attention, you can almost sense whatever anomalous energy sustains them.

Zaton
Paint Chips
• Just north of Izumrudne in Zaton region, an example of the paint chip anomalies can be found at an old bus stop. Flecks of paint, calved from the concrete wall, drift, twist and twirl into a colorful, cohesive pattern, riding on the ebb and flow of a gentle current. It's really quite mesmerizing. Just last week we lost a rookie who had decided watching it was more important than his life. Bloodsucker. It happens.

Floating Trees
• Just like their Wild Island counterparts, another set of three trees can be found floating above their root holes north-east of the Sand Mine in Zaton. Sparser and more spindly to match the local flora, but otherwise the same.

Locust Swarm
• There is an extensive marshland in the northernmost reaches of Zaton that serves as home turf to a buzzing black cloud of giant locusts, roving incessantly above the fetid waters. You might be wondering, what's so anomalous about a swarm of insects? Yeah, Smartass pondered that very same question. We don't talk about what happened to Smartass.

Phantom Bushes
• Just south of Lviv in Zaton, three phantom bushes sit placidly by the shore. An unseen anomalous force has amassed a collection of leaves that float in the air, suspended in the rough shape of the bushes they seem to be mimicking. Passing through scatters the leaves momentarily, but they regroup without much in the way of complaining.
Swamps
Whomping Willow
• The whomping willow is located on a small hummock in the north-east area of the Swamps. The vehicle resting in rusty repose between its gnarly branches should be taken as a warning to all who might run afoul of this tree's temper. The occupants have never been found, but probably made great fertiliser.

Waterspout
• Roaming across the surface of the swamps east of the Fishing Hamlet, a small waterspout drifts back forth, sucking up the occasional fish or frog and tossing harmlessly back into the water. It's been doing that for years. Damn thing never seems to stop; like the Energizer Bunny, it just keeps going, and going, and going...
SIRCAA
Fountain
• Found hovering over a small reflecting pool near the main entrance to the SIRCAA building, this anomaly seems to alchemize water out of thin air, raining water droplets as it slowly bobs up and down a few feet over the surface of the water. Some egghead tried to explain it to me once. Pfft. Like I need an explanation for miracles.
Rostock
Black Hole
• Just south of the base in Rostock, you can find the black hole Anomaly. Hovering over a deep fissure cleft into the earth and bracketed by a long building likewise sundered, you can see the random assortment of scrap and detritus that orbits the massive anomaly. It is said that leaping into it will safely transport you to another location, but I won't go near the thing myself. You do it, rookie.

Chemical Plant
Leaf Vortex
• Subtle and elegant, the leaf vortex is easy to miss. There isn't much too it. North-east of the Ahroprom Factory in the Chemical Plant region, this dreamy spiral of leaves hangs suspended in the still air, extending several meters across the grass. It's quiet here... Almost too quiet...

Stenchanka Transit System
• Located in Stenchanka on the western edge of the Chemical Plant region, this small hamlet is host to a network of teleportation anomalies that can zip you around in no time. It's perfectly safe. I'm sure that Kirill's heart attack a few hours after we went through it last week was sheer coincidence.

Mosaic Tendrils
• Located on the southern wall of the Promin CMD Factory in the Chemical Plant region. Just like it's counterpart in Garbage, tiles from a large mosaic flake off the wall and dance in a serene, spellbinding fashion. Look out for gravitational traps here, stalker.
Burnt Forest
Bonsai
• Like the ornamental trees they are named after, these twisted trunks have developed warped and misshapen, as though some force directed them to grow around the several large rocks that hover amongst them on their small islet west of Rozyizhdzhe in the Burnt Forest. Radiation is a problem here, stalker; don't stay long.

Levitating Boulder
• The levitating boulder anomaly can be found east of Krug Antenna Complex in the Burnt Forest Region. Ripped from the ground and suspended several feet in the air, this mammoth hunk of rock floats placidly, pivoting and rotating at a calm, gentle speed.

Duga
Locust Swarm
• Southern Duga is host to it's own swarm of locusts. Here, the dark cloud of buzzing insects winds its way around the streets and buildings, in search of what? I don't know. Lets go, rookie. They make me uneasy.
Malachite
Golden Sphere
• Found hovering over a small pond east of STC Malachite, this spherical anomaly doesn't seem to do much except drip water occasionally. Maybe someone left it behind while on a picnic. Why is the golden sphere really more a tungsten grey, you ask? Those are the kinds of questions that will get you killed in the zone, stalker.

Barnacle
• Trypophobics beware, barnacles are fairly common in the zone, as far as benign anomalies go anyway. You'll find them all over the place, but this one is at the VPC Mirror location west of STC Malachite. Unpleasant to look at, but harmless as far as I can tell. I still wouldn't touch it.
Yantar
Leaf Eater
• Heading south-west from the Trailer Dump location in Yantar, you can find a leaf eater hovering over the shore. This green-tinged gravitational anomaly swells as it consumes dead leaves, which seem to be the only objects light enough to be drawn in by it's pull. But don't take my word for it, stalker. Go stand underneath it. I dare you.

Web of Leaves
• Suspended between two trees next to a small pond east of Choppers Field in Yantar lies a giant web of leaves. Creepy. Just be thankful there doesn't seem to be a giant spider made of leaves to go with it. Oddly, in the background, a rusted-out tractor can be found where it broke down attempting to pull a tank from the muck.
Red Forest
Graviconcentrates
• A cluster of three large graviconcentrates can be found at the Containers location in the Red Forest. They are said to form in an instantaneous release of anomalous energy, catching the debris thrown by the initial explosion and suspending it in space. Best not to loiter, stalker. This place in known to be home to a large gang of bandits with an unpleasant pet.

Psi-Spires
• At three locations in the Red Forest, psi-spires can be found jutting from the earth. These strange formations are each unique in construction, but share the same features; long, narrow stalagmites sprouting diagonally from the ground like leaning termite mounds. For ambiance, an unseen force carries a swarm of small rocks, spiraling about the central structure and filling the air with an almost insectoid buzz as they rub and collide. In short, they're creepy as hell, stalker.

Spirit Leaves
• Near each of the three psi-spires found in the Red Forest region, spirit leaves drift through the trees, flowing, winding, and coalescing as they orbit the spires at a distance; never too close, but never too far. No one has been able to explain the relationship between these two phenomena, but the gentle, dreamy beauty of the spirit leaves juxtaposed against the unsettling, almost hostile nature of the spires certainly begs further questions.

Happy Ghosts
• Hidden in the trees near the eastern edge of the Red Forest, you may be able to spot the happy ghosts. Several splinters of bright blue light stand vertically in a circle. What exactly they are or what they are doing there, no one is sure; radiation in the area reaches levels that surpass the protection of even the best suits in the zone. That's probably why they're happy. No rookie stalkers poking and prodding them.

Web of Leaves
• Stretched across the road west of the Lishchyna Facility, just north of the intersection, you'll come across the web of leaves anomaly. We first found it when a stalker stumbled through it in the dark. Rookie, I tell you, you could hear a pin drop while we waited for something terrible to happen, but the web just closed up the gap where Boyd passed through and the zone stayed quiet. Lucky break.
Cooling Towers
Flaming Train Tracks
• North-east of the SKD Assembly Unit in the Cooling Tower region, you'll find a small stretch of train tracks that burns with an eternal fire. Doc says a train would have had to get up to at least eighty-eight miles per hour to generate that kind of heat.
Yaniv
Leaf Eater
• Another leaf eater anomaly can be found north-west of the Dusty Cable Tunnel in Yaniv. Nothing special about this one. Just doin' it's thing. Eating leaves.

Conjoined Wagons
• Fused into a singular mass of steel and fiberglass, competing theories as to how this formation came to be abound, but all are in agreement that they're glad to not have been around when it happened. South-east of the Tornado anomaly in Yaniv region, an eerie, ethereal tone provides a steady background to the spontaneous creaking of so much metal under so much stress. Look out for whirlwind anomalies, rookie.
Jupiter
Exploded Truck
• North-east of the Bread Factory in Jupiter, a lone truck can be seen suspended several meters above the ground. The apparent victim of explosive, anomalous force the vehicle appears to be frozen in apogee, even as it sheds tires and cargo. I wouldn't walk under it, stalker. You never know.
Pripyat
Unfalling Car
• Two hundred meters into Pripyat from the western entrance, if you look way, way up the side of an apartment building, you can find a falling car trailing sparks and tossing debris frozen in time. There is sits, having fallen, but not falling. Unfalling, if you will.

Anti-Gravity Apartments
• North-east of the Pripyat Ferris Wheel, a pair of apartment buildings stands side by side, just across from the park. Some unseen anomalous force is ever-so-slowly stripping chunks of brick and mortar from the structure and pulling them up into space. I sure hope no one was living in those apartments; the last time the zone blew up a guys kitchen, the whole place turned into a blood bath.

Pripyat Night Club
• Bordering the river's edge in north-eastern Pripyat, a small night club can be found at the River Port location. If you get too close, the lights go out. This party isn't for you, stalker. Don't take it personally. The host is kind of an ass anyway.

Irradiated Giant Hogweed
• In the space between the west and east wings of the Pripyat Industrial Hospital No126 grows a field of irradiated giant hogweed. You know, because regular old giant hogweed isn't bad enough. This anomaly is less "benign" and more "searing chemical burns." Anyway, the detector says there's an artifact back there. Good hunting, stalker.

@Captain M.o.M. - Thank you. I have no doubt that there are more than a few I have yet to find myself. This game is pretty amazing.

I spent many hours searching for such anomalies and was very surprised that I missed so many anyway, great job:steamthis:

@AndriyB, the benign anomalies are just for show, really. The only location here that has an artifact (and it does not respawn) is the giant hogweed in Pripyat. But if its artifacts you're after, you can check out my farming route guide here: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3441313662

HI, can they be harvested for artifacts?
