Scoring System Basics to know
Just recapping the tutorial
  • You get points for doing tricks. Drifting, close calls, spins, jumps, road stuff
  • There is a score multiplier based on speed
    • Slow, Grey text, 1x
    • Medium, White text, 2x
    • Fast, Yellow text, 3x
  • You get a bonus added for every 10k of points in your combo
  • If you are on dirt, you get NOTHING. If you drift onto dirt, you don't get any points
So, what do I do?
TL;DR: Slide down the hill on butter with one big combo

  • Obvious stuff first, we want that 3x multiplier as much as possible. So go fast. Lots of routes have hairpins where you will need to slow down (Nordic Frost), but keep speed where you can
  • Combo bonus is nice, so keep that combo going. Like, the whole time. This is part of why low grip wheels are nice, you can drift wherever you want
    • The tutorial suggests that the bonus is linear, so cashing in two 100k combos is the same as one 200k, but I haven't tested that. You won't really want to cash in early anyway
  • Any scoring activity will carry your combo. Usually this means drifting, but close calls and road stuff can help you out
  • Stay on the path. Drifting on dirt, even between the road and guardrail, gets you 0 points
Board and Wheels
Simple but important.

Board: Low steering
Wheels: Low grip

On very steep maps you may want your wheels to have a little more grip so you don't have to slow down so much in the corners. Otherwise the specific board/wheels don't matter, just use whatever looks cool.

We want to drift as much as possible. You can do other tricks WHILE drifting, so want to go sideways while mostly moving straight, and keeping your speed.
Low steering means that you start sliding sooner when just turning (no trigger input / putting hands down). This helps you to keep your drifts long, traveling mostly straight
Low grip is low grip. You can slide around and not loose speed very quick.
Drifting as Speed Control
Drifting is your main way to get points. With a slippy setup you can just hold down your triggers and slide from top to bottom. You'll have to get really sideways to make your turns, so longer boards give you more grace to avoid reverting off a cliff
You can keep your angle going for some spins, but it's really risky, since when you revert your board wants to turn the other way, so don't do it in a corner. You also lose more speed so you can drop multipliers with spins.

What about hairpins and losing speed?

Air brakes are very effective at slowing down, but it doesn't give you any points.
However, drifting with your hands up slows you down more than when your hands are down. when you're too fast in a corner, let go of your triggers and you can slow down enough to avoid eating guard rails. Best of all, you keep getting points.
Noticing this is what convinced me to write up this guide
Other tricks?
Close Calls
I believe this gets you the most points of any trick (Unsure about jumps, but those are rare). However, you can't close call on just anything. Most walls or rails don't give you close calls as there is a bit of dirt next to them. The tunnel in Vineyard Hills is a notable exception, you can get 20k+ inside that tunnel from close calls.

Spins
It's easy to bail with spins, so be careful. I personally don't do any, but I'm sure there's points being left on the table with them. As mentioned earlier you can drop your speed multiplier easily too, so spin in moderation.

Everything else
Everything else is situational. Road stuff adds a little. Jumps are cool but route dependent and hard to land consistently.
