Introduction
The guide will be covering the best ways to earn money in Necesse.

There are two parts to the guide, non-automatable farming and automatable farming. The difference between them are if you as the player need to do anything else besides the initial set up and the buying/selling of items.

Just before we start, I would like to mention there is a page for Money Farms[necessewiki.com] on the Necesse Official Wiki too.
Non-automatable (Dungeon Bombing/Mining)
Dungeon walls sell for a price of 10 coins each.

You can choose to mine dungeon walls (mineable with demonic pickaxe or above) to save up on bomb cost, but it'll take time and the return on investment for bombs is very good.

Bomb
Expected Returns
Potential Returns
Iron Bomb
200+
250-300
Dynamite
500
700-800

Notes:
  • Returns = Total money earned from selling to the Pawnbroker - Cost of buying dynamites from a happy broken pirate
  • Expected returns = Minimum return you can expect if you're throwing bombs right next to flat walls (and not spamming them on the same walls)
  • Potential Returns = With better placement of bombs and used sparingly, such as throwing bombs on walls that are caved in to maximize the amount of walls that can be broken by a single bomb

Why use this method?
  • This method is the fastest way to earn money in the game before reaching the Deep Desert Caves. Not only is there no set up required, the returns are instant. It's the perfect way to get quick bucks early on.
Automatable Farms (Crops and Logs)
Automatable farms means you can set it up in a way for your settlers to farm them for you, basically passive income.

Crops and Logs Comparison

I did a short 160 minute experiment to compare between the returns of crops and trees.

Results:

Item
Coins Earned
Wheat
15840 (sold to Farmer) / 3168 (sold to pawnbroker)
Pumpkins
3935
Lemon trees (w/o chopping)
2068
Cacti
1300
Oak Trees
1051
Lemon trees (with chopping)
872

Assumptions:
  • Money farm comparisons ran for 160min.
  • All crops and trees grown before starting but no fruits.
  • 10x10 squares, so only 25 trees fitted in those plots.
  • All plots tended to only one farmer each.
  • The farmer tending to those plots live extremely close by to their plot.
  • Limited fertilizer, started with 100, set to use only seeds for more fertilizer in compost bins. 10 bins accessible to each 100 land plot.
  • Wheat sold to max happiness farmer for 10 each.
  • No bees

Explanations:
  • Crops don't require space around them, so you can grow more crops in the same piece of land compared to trees.
  • Fertilizer also further speeds up the speed of crops growth, cutting the time for them to grow by half for only losing some money from selling excess seeds.
  • Wheat are sold for 10 coins each to happy farmers, much higher than anything else on the list that are sold to pawnbrokers.

Notes:
  • Log farms are still useful for crafting, so don't ignore them.
  • Crafting Farmland for Crops takes a lot of wood, so starting with a log farm to get the required logs for farmland is a good move.
  • You can also automate the expansion of log farms automatically. (guide on it in the official wiki page)
  • Flower farms (firemones and iceblossoms) can be sold to Alchemist as well for good prices. However, compared to crops (and especially wheat) that can have multiple drops per harvest, flowers only drop one per harvest.

Why use this method?
  • After setting up, there is no need for any player interactions besides selling of goods. So, it's basically free passive income.
Semi-Auto (Mob Farms)
With the addition of the Banner of War (obtainable as the reward for completing Deep Desert Cave's Adventure Journal Challenges), Mob Farms have turned into the most lucrative and easiest to start farms in the game.

An extremely simple yet effective design for a mob farm requires only as little as 9 building blocks and a suitable summon.

The best summon for mob farming is no doubt the Orb of Slimes for its consistently high AOE damage in medium range. The AOE and range part are especially important, as all other summons aren't able to deal all around AOE while also have a very far range leading you drops your player is unable to collect.

As for the building block, I found the bookshelves to the best. Because it's not a full tile, enemies will need to walk further before they are able to damage it, giving the orb of slime more time to deal damage and knock them back, preventing from them damaging and breaking the tile.

The outside walls are not needed. It was a failproof in case a bookshelf does break, to not give archers a straight line of vision to the banners. (Tho, it does make the farm look nicer)

If you pay attention, I have two banners on the lower corners. Those are Banner of Summon Speed and Banner of Damage to help increase the spinning speed and damage of the orbs further.

Before starting the Farm

For the farm to work best, the player should have the Toolbox or Item attractor trinket for the increased pick up range.

The player should also NOT USE THE STINKFLASK as enemies spawned from the stinkflask does not aggro towards war banners and would just wait around for the player to enter their sight.

Multiple Banners of War does stack. However, having too many will lead to the mobs reaching mob cap and players might not feel like there's much difference in mob spawn rate after that. Players can buy more Banners of War from the Elder after completing the Journal Challenge.

Note : The stink flask and Banner of War Stacking claims are confirmed by the Devs.

Starting the Farm

To start the farm, simply place Banners of War in the 9x9 area inside the bookshelves. I have a torch in the middle so I can fit up to 8.

Stopping the Farm

To stop the farm, simply break the Banners of War and clear out the remaining enemies.

Test Results

I done 2 tests on the farm. Read the info about my farm and notes below.

Time
Coins Earned
5 min
22464 (only bones), 33969 (if bones are crafted into bone arrows), ~46000 (bone arrows + gateway tablets sold)
10 min
48688 (only bones), 73032 (if bones are crafted into bone arrows), ~100000 (bone arrows + gateway tablets sold)

About my Farm

  • My farm was created in a Tier 3 Deep Forest Cave Extraction Incursion.
  • The reason I used an extraction incursion is because normal mobs (mobs not spawned in by the Banner of War) have a much lower spawn rate compared to normal caves and because extraction incursions does not progress no matter how many mobs are killed unlike Hunts.
  • Deep Forest Caves seem to be the most lucrative as mobs who does drop loot (skeletons) are in high abundance compared to other caves where many mobs don't drop any loot.
  • Tier 3 Incursions have an increased 45% loot, but has the downside of higher HP mobs. So theoretically, higher tier incursions should have even more loot drop.
  • The incursion I'm in has the alchemical interference modifier. The best modifiers to go for when picking an incursion are those that don't damage you directly. The best two would be alchemical inteference and earthquake. The crawlmagadon modifier might reduce the returns as the zombies would add to the mob cap too while dropping nothing.
  • The gear I'm using is T5 Ruby Crystal Armor and T4 Orb of Slime. Yes, I could have used a T5 OoS but I ran out of upgrade shards. uwu. I have a max summon count of 7.

Notes

  • Crafting Bone Arrows with the Bones instead of directly selling them also increases the value by 50%. 1 bone arrow (8 coins) will craft into 10 bone arrows (1.2 coins each, or 12 coin total). With this, we could see the 10 minute test reaching 100K per 10 min.
  • Farm could definitely be further improved with more damage or changing location to incursions of higher tier for more loot% (assuming enemies die at about the same rate).
Closing notes
More tests and comparisons that might be coming in the future:
  • Crops vs Flowers
  • Different Caves and Incursions for Mob Farms

I would appreciate it if you add the guide to your favorite list so I can see how many players are looking forwards to more updates.

With the economy changes (Pawnbrokers and Farmers no longer buying infinite amounts of items) and the addition of Traders, I'd love to see a Shipping Chest addition to this great guide!
Or even permission to write one myself with the explicit purpose of automating S.Chests and Traders for maximum laziness.

One thought is wheat: you could definitely micromanage a bunch of farmers to sell to at max happiness, but now they only carry a few thousand gold with a renewal timer of 10 days. Is it now more input-and-time efficient to put that wheat into flour making for bread/blueberry cakes?

2x wheat = 4g (Pawnbroker price)
2x flour = 8g for Bread
1x flour + 5 blueberries + 1 sugar = 26g for Blueberry Cake
