Introduction
Call me Marie.

Last year - to be precise - and having too much to do in my purse, and too much to interest me, I thought it would be a good idea to play this game and see a little about this world.
And here I am, 164 game hours later, doing a guide.

So, when it's about game stuff I like to make simple guides, soo simple, that they are useless, especially because we have a wiki and other stuff to help us.

But the intention is to help, to have everything we need about ONE SUBJECT in ONE PLACE with very direct information and very pretty pictures (cause it's nice and Book of Hours is beautiful).

This guide is in English because is more accessible to everyone, but I have to disclaimer that English is not my first language, and this guide will have some grammar errors (please enlighten me about those).

BTW, this guide probably has spoilers, since it lists every Ink recipe or location. But I will try to hide it as much as possible.

I hope you enjoy!
What is an ink?
In game context it's a type of "Craftable" item with an "Aspect" of a "Thing", "Liquid" (normally), "Ink" and at least one "Principle". The player needs to use a "Workstation" and overcome a certain level of "Challenge" ("Prentice-level", "Scholar-level" and "Keeper-level") to craft or, sometimes, use the Ink. Some types of Inks need a certain "Skill" to be made, some specifics ingredients, others just need the right "Principle". With Ink (and a few other things), the player can write "Letters", "Manuscript" (if you have DLC House of Light-HoL) and, ultimately, it's "Journal" with is a requirement to finish the game. Ink can be used as a resource for other purposes as long it matches the required "Aspect". When "Considered", it generates a "Memory" and is destroyed. In most cases, it is a one-time use item.
What to do with an ink?
As I said, u can use an Ink to:
  • Letters
  • Invitation Letters (DLC HoL)
  • a Manuscript (DLC HoL)
  • the Librarian’s Journal
  • a Petition
  • and Memory
With exception, to interact with those u need at least:
Workstation + Element of the Soul + Ink

The only case Ink will NOT be consumed or you don’t need a Element of the Soul are by Ordering (see Letters), writing Invitation or recording addresses information (see Invitations).

And if u want to save your Inks, u can use the Typewriters, since they will not be destroyed.

You can NOT use Pernculate Ink to write Letters, Invitation and Manuscript since it’s poisonous.

Letters
There are 5 letters you interact in the game:
  • A Letter to the Librarian
  • A Reply to the Trust
  • A Reminder to the Librarian
  • Order Form: Cater & Hero
  • Order Form: T.R.N. Ltd
You receive the A Letter to the Librarian after drying your Journal and present it to the Post Office (+ money).
  • By reply to it, u craft A Reply to the Trust and after send it u will start to welcome visitors, incidents and money (only in Spring Season, sadly).
  • If u decide to NOT reply it, A Reminder to the Librarian will arrive every season until u reply. Don’t worry, u can delay the reply as much as u want. BoH is a very chilly game, so your work as a Librarian is secure (however, no money until reply).
To reply A Letter to the Librarian/ A Reminder to the Librarian you need a Element of the Soul, it will define your reply message to the Trust.

The other two Letters are for Ordering, they arrive in Autumn/ Winter season respectively. They are:
  • Order Form: Cater & Hero
  • Order Form: T.R.N. Ltd
Both Ordering stuffs like paper, food, beverage, material, metal, cooking ingredient (DLC HoL), fuel, teapacks etc. U can order multiple items by re-using the order form before submitting it or rewrite it if made a mistake by select “begin again”. The total fee will be displayed in the order form info box.
After submitting it, two or three days later a Delivery will arrive with everything u buy. Yeahh, shopping!

To send a Letter, post it at the Post Office, pay it fee and that’s it.

Invitation (DLC HoL)
Dr Serena Blackwood a Librarian too will send Writing-Case after u submit A Reply to the Trust/ A Reminder to the Librarian at the end of Spring Season.

Since then, every visitor u help will give their card, so u can record their addresses in the Writing-Case by place it in a Workstation to later invite them to hangout. U also receive a Occult Scrap, a persistent Memory with Knock 2, Moth 2 and Rose 2 Principle.

Apparently, u can record the villagers’ addresses, but I haven't try yet. However, I do know that when consult them for help, if add the Writing-Case to “Topic”, they can be invited to hangout.

To write an Invitation you need:
Workstation + Ink (consumed unless it’s a typewriting) + Writing-Case + optional Element of the Soul + optional Skill + optional Memory
By matching the guest's Principle it will create a Invitation.

To send an Invitation, post it at the Post Office, pay it fee and that’s it. They will arrive after 65 second clock.

Manuscript (DLC HoL)
It's an item u make to help the Visitors of the Hush House, primarily after an incident ends. It's a small book about a Skill.

I did one, but never offer it to the visitors, so here what I learn:

Chose a Skill u want to make a Manuscript. The Skill Level will determinate it level as so the primary Skill's Principle the Manuscript Principle.

U can use the Typewriters to save Inks, since they will not be destroyed. However, using an ink that matches the Principle will double the Manuscript Level.

Journal
Finally, the Librarian’s Journal.

Surprisingly u can write on it if you want to. The game will give some tips if u try and that’s very important. So, keep an eye on it and read everything.

By those tips u may notice that are Great Inks that can be used in your Journal, so the following content is a spoiler, be careful.

We have those things call “Great Inks” or “Inks of Conclusion” or simply “Encaustum Terminale” you need them to write your Librarian’s Journal to record a History and fulfill the Librarian's purpose, i.e. finish the game.

To not let you use the item and lose something rare pay attention to those Inks with very high Principle you may or may not find on the Hush House or pay attention to the list below:
  • Marakat
  • Nillycant
  • Orpiment Exultant
  • Porphyrine
  • Uzult

Petition
You can write a Petition to ask for a very special situation but this may be or not a Spoiler. Better careful that sorry.

To not let you lose something, pay attention an Ink with Rose Principle. By interacting with, the game will give you hits.

I'm NOT 100% sure, but if a Petition has already been request, u have to wait it “event” end to write a new one.

Now the Petition itself:
There is a special Season named Numa. It occurs randomly but you can summon it by sending a Petition for Labyrinth Season in the Post Office. You need a special Ink to do so:

Porphyrine.

To write a Petition you need a Workstation and:
Porphyrine + item with Blank Aspect + 20 Knock, Moon or Rose and NO Heart, Edge or Winter
To send it, you need:
3 Tally (Tin Spintria)
At the end of the current Season, Numa will start.

Memory
By Consider all Inks, u recive Memory: Scent (nectar 1), with exception of:
  • Chronsichord - Memory: Pattern (Knock 2, Forge 1)
  • Perinculate - Memory: Fear (Scale 2, Edge 1)
  • Silent Typewriter - Memory: Touch (Forge 1)
  • Typewriter - Memory: Sight (Lantern 1)
How to make an ink?
To make a Ink you need:
  • an Element of the Soul
  • a Workstation and
  • a Skill
And if it’s a powerful item:
  • an ingredient
For a optional boost (most of cases):
  • a Memory
We have, in total 16 Ink and 14 can be Craft. For curiosity, the 2 Inks we can’t craft are Tools, they are Typewriters that can be found in Nocturnal Period rooms. The craftable ones are:
  • Ashrtine
  • Asimel
  • Catwink
  • Chronsichord
  • Houndsgall
  • Marakat
  • Nillycant
  • Orpiment Exultant
  • Perhibiate
  • Perinculate
  • Porphyrine
  • Stargall Ink
  • Uzult
  • Yewgall Ink
So, in summary:
Workstation + Element of the Soul + Skill (sometime specifics Skill) + ingredient (optional or if need) + Memory (optional most of time)
Let's dissect each topic

Element of the Soul
An Element of the Soul is a requirement for whatever you do in the game, however, you can also use Maladied Soul Element too. It helps A LOT since Malady cards don’t exhaust themselves. There is a guide that explains their uses, you can read about it here:
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3097120524

Workstation
For Workstation, every single one is fine, just be aware it's Principle, which limits and what can be done with each one. I assuming you guys know what a Workstation is, but if not, it is whatever thing you click and have, like 5 to 6 slots to place your cards. It can be tons of things, like Desks, Beds, Instruments etc.

Skill
For low-level Inks, any Skill works, as long the Principle is reaches (Prentice-level). To high level Inks, however, you need specifics Skills (Scholar-level) and stuff and, sometime, even a specifics ingredient (Keeper-level).

There three main skill:
  • Inks of Containment
  • Inks of Power
  • Inks of Revelation
In the next chapter, there is a list with all the Skill use to make Ink (because why not?).

Ingredients
A recipe can ask for a thing with a specific Aspect (ex.: Liquid, Metal, Plant etc.) or a specific item. The game hits you about those stuff and some books give you the recipes.
But, like with Memory, you can use ingredients just to boost your Principle level. Beware of the Workstation requirement since some only accept certain types of ingredients, for example Desk just accept Ink, Paper, Memory and Tools.

But that’s all very generic, to master Ink production you need to understand how Crafting works in this game.

Crafting
When creating stuff, any stuff, you need to achieve a certain level of Principle. For this, any combination of Element of the Soul + Skill in a Workstation + additional Memory or item works.

But to create more powerful items you need more Principle as well as a significant Aspect (ex. Flower, plant, metal, liquid etc.).

And for an even more powerful item, you need even more Principle AND a specific ingredient (ex.: Ichor Vitreous).

Those are the 3 levels of Challenges to create almost everything: Prentice-level, Scholar-level and Keeper-level.

A resume:
  • Prentice: Principle reaches 5
  • Scholar: Principle reaches 10 + specific Aspect
  • Keeper: Principle reaches 15 + specific ingredient
You can use Memory to boost you Principle level requirement, but that’s depending on the Workstation slots. The ingredients add to your Principle level too, meaning you don’t need high level cards to make high level stuff.

When crafting Prentice level, the menu info box gives tips for what to use or how to advance to a Scholar level. To Keeper Recipe, however, you need to find the recipes in books or Trial-&-Error approach.

I notice a few thing by Trial-&-Error, but they may be spoiler, so better safe that sorry:
If you are in doubt about how to make a Keeper recipe, use the item you creat in the Scholar lvl of that skill.
For exemple:
To creat Nillycant, a ink Keeper level recipe, you need a item named Solomon’s Preparation + Inks of Containment or Sights & Sensations. Solomon’s Preparation is an item creat by a Scholar level recipe from both Inks of Containment and Sights & Sensations, the very ones skills that is use to make Nillycant
Where to find inks recipes?
There are two ways to find inks recipes:
  • reading books
  • trial and error

Books
Books are the main source to find new recepes, I notices the most of them are about Scholar or Keeper Recipes or even a different approach to use a Skill.

I haven't really pin-point which book gives a recipe about ink, but I believe that most of books that give Inks Recipes are about... inks!

Here my hypothesis: when I said it's about inks you can include books that gives ink lessons and books that literally say something about inks (like "History of Inks" or "A Light in the Inkwell"). Even if the book don't end up giving a recipe, it's a way to start and level up the trio-ink skill (which is always a good thing).

Trial & Error
While books may look like the main source to find new recepes, to me, the best way to find a recipe is by Trial & Error.

When crafting, by reachs Pratice level, the game always explain how to advance to a Scholar level.

As I said this in the comments (thank you @ Fab for the insight), I believe it a design choice to encourage the player to explorer, try to discover new things when crafting.

We have three main Skill related to ink (Inks of Containment, Inks of Power and Inks of Revelation), but by using a Trial-&-Error approach while exploring other Skill the player may notice that there are (apparently) no-relate ink skill that can, indeed, craft ink (34 skills to be exact) and some are even easier to use than the trio-ink skill.

I recommend proceed carefully the next chapter if you don't want spoilers, because I'll explicitly talks about all the skill that can craft inks, all recipes and even where to find inks in the Hush House.
Which skill should I focus on?
There is specific 3 Skill that make almost every Ink (12 in total):

Inks of Containment - Winter 2, Moon 1 (5 Inks in total):
  • Catwink
  • Houndgall
  • Nillycant
  • Stargall Ink
  • Yewgall Ink

Inks of Power - Rose 2, Scale 1 (7 Inks in total):
  • Marakat
  • Orpiment Exultant
  • Perhibiate
  • Perinculate
  • Porphyrine
  • Stargall Ink
  • Yewgall Ink

Inks of Revelation - Lantern 2, Moth 1 (5 inks in total):
  • Asimel
  • Porphyrine
  • Stargall Ink
  • Uzult
  • Yewgall Ink

Only 2 Inks can’t be made by Inks Skill:
  • Ashartine (even if the description says it is an Ink of Revelation) and
  • Chronsichord (Tool first, Ink later)

Surprisingly, which Ink have its own set of Skill that can be used to make it. Here are the commons one use:

Thanks. You explained enough. :) I'm taking notes about some books I've read because I realized they have hints about secrets or recipes. I'll probably push forward as much as I can before going back to the hardest recipes secrets.

BTW, Fab, I write a waayyy bigger reply, but Steam have a character limit so I take some stuff off. Tell me if u need more tips, I have some that may helps.
I will re-read the guide and try to make a spoiler free section, so u (and others) can proceed without fear of spoilers.

Hello Fab, thanks for ur comment! I heavily rely on error-and-trial, but books give recipes too. Nowadays I allow myself to use guides and wiki since I already finished the game.

I believe that error-and-trial is part of the game design cause the books explain more about lvl. 10 and 15 recipes or a different approach to use skills that gives a lvl 5 recipes. The craft system reinforces this perception to me because when crafting, by reaching lvl 5 the game normally says what’ll be craft and the next step to a lvl 10 recipe. The books that give ink recipes are mostly about... inks! (ex.: History of inks) and maybe books that give ink-skill lessons have some recipes too, but that's just a hypothesis. And to find a recipe in a book is too, an error-and-trial experience. BoH is a game that, by design, needs time and a looot of reading and writing down for u to advance.

Hello Marie. I didn't read most of this guide to not spoil myself but I wanted to ask you how do you find the recipes in general for crafting. Are you just exploring and testing random combinations, or do you find concrete recipes at some point in the game?

I unlocked 40% of the rooms but I've not reached 10+ principle crafts yet (and I don't want to waste my materials if it doesn't work).

Thanks for the guide and have a nice day.
