Types of sparks.
There are six different colours your spark can be, and it depends largely on how well you act within the Primeval Forest. Generally ranked from "worst to best" as far as mechanics go, these colours are:

Red:

Purple:

Blue:

Green:

White:

Golden!:
Getting a golden spark
The game tracks your actions within the Primeval Forest both before and after you get your spark and certain values will decrease it depending on your actions.

From what I have generally seen, the game starts your spark off as either green or white, and if you anger the Great Forest Boar, it will slowly start moving towards the red.

The most noticeable change occurs when you kill golden boars and piglets within the forest. I am fairly certain that killing piglets is the greatest crime and will often move your sparks colour from one tier to a lower one.

As such, it is advisable to always avoid killing them. Pretty much everything else in the forest is fair game, so kill the wolves, bears and glowing fungus to your heart's content.

Also, there are some boars near the entrance to the forest that do not have the golden glow. I am fairly certain these have no impact on your spark's colour.

Saving Cay at the entrance to the camp only has a minimal effect on raising your colour. So you can skip him if you are having troubles with wolves at this point, but you'll have to live with your conscience.

I do not know how much your actions with the bonded (the worshippers of the Great Boar) changes your spark's colour, but it is generally not as impactful as killing golden boars. You need to do their quests in order to progress the story and get your spark. As a general rule: be polite to them, uphold their virtues and don't be mean.

And give love to the piglets!

Once you have completed the tasks of the bonded, and you receive your spark, it should be white assuming you've done everything right.

From there, Diemo will send you on a quest to attach a talisman to each of the mother roots in the forest. On the last one, you will find a group of poachers that have killed and roasted up some piglets. You need to express your anger at them for doing so and confront them for doing so and your spark should then turn golden.

Killing them is not entirely needed, but it is generally considered a good action by the forest, and we have forgone a bit of experience not killing boars...

The Expedition
Once you show your chosen faction your spark, you will be sent on the expedition to retrieve the Divine Boar.

Dialogue with the rest of the expedition force does not seem to have an effect on spark colour, but one could play it safe by constantly asking if what you are doing is "right". Although I had no issue with being boastful and eager to capture the boar. When entering the forest, you'll be given the option to skip a boar fight. Better to do so, but so long as you aren't the one killing the boars, you shouldn't receive any penalty.

Once you get to the boss fight, the rules still apply. However, the spirit boars are safe to kill.

Once the boar is made manifest, your spark will disappear, as such it stops judging you in the background. Once you beat the great boar he will start to get sucked into a druidic vessel, the great boar will summon a large swath of golden boars. I have found that you can kill them with impunity and no loss of colour seems to occur. But if you want to play it super safe, let your companions deal with them.
Regaining your Spark
Once you get your rune and hit Chapter 4, you can fight Diemo to regain your spark. He can be found a little west of the tavern where you fought the bear for the bonded quests earlier, here:

Dialogue here does have a moderate impact on your spark's colour. If you wish for Diemo to find peace once you defeat him your spark's colour may improve.

I do not believe interactions with the rest of the bonded changes anything, including getting vengeance with Bertine.

BUYING ALL THE ATONEMENT TOKENS DOES NOTHING!!! NOTHING!!!

But now that we have our spark back, there is one thing that we must do...
Saving Cay
In order to heal Cay from being cut off from the Primeval forest, we need to relinquish our spark to him by talking to Taron next to the tavern.

If you have a spark that is at least blue, you should be able to keep your spark after giving Cay its energy.

Untested if purple will still say with you, but a red spark will certainly leave you to stay with Cay. But if you want to keep your spark regardless, you can let Cay die.

You monster.

However, once Cay is saved, it is perfectly safe to change your spark's colour if you prefer a "lesser" colour by the forest's standards. There still are a few golden boars hidden in the dying Primeval forest for you to lower your colour rank (a little west of the Diemo fight).

Be aware, there might not actually be enough boars to change your spark from gold to red, so plan accordingly.
Conclusion
Do bear in mind, the colour of your spark is largely cosmetic and ultimately pointless. Keeping the spark around is also largely not worth the experience lost from not killing golden boars and only minimally useful.

Except, true Drovians will finish the game with a Golden Spark. :3

Most of these hidden mechanics were discovered through a bit of trial and error, and are not 100%. Pardon my use of the Virgin Nemetonian armours instead of the Chad Remnant armours. Experimentation required I used my sissy-ass non-iron man mode save files.

But please, if anything else in regards to Sparks is discovered, please detail them in comments.

I will not be providing any details on finishing any of the bonded's quests, so please do not ask there.

Happy Drova-ing and have fun with your badass purple spark!

Updated. Thanks.
I'm fairly certain that the new patch makes spark karma a little easier to deal with, and unfortunately I have not been able to enjoy this game for a while.

I got a gold spark that stayed gold the entire time, as a Remnant. It came back gold in Act 4. (I tested a save from the end of Act 3, and went right to Diemo. It's gold. Though if I choose a negative dialog with Diemo it immediately turns white.)

I never killed golden boars except in the boss fight, and I found the 2 poachers before the spark ritual. I chose an option that let the poachers live, but still scared them off. I must have chosen a lot of positive dialogs though. I tend to just agree with whatever an NPC is saying.

Originally had a White Spark then when I went to reclaim it in CH4 I got a Golden Spark. I had no idea there was so many... Such a cool mechanic!

If the Great Boar doesn't want his minions killed, why does he make them aggro me :lunar2020thinkingtiger:

Wow man, I got the red one during my 1st playthrough. That's a little disappointing but I really wanted that XP! Also I gave it to Cay cuz I love the pigglets and the Might Boar! I also got the good ending in the end so it doesn't matter. But I love this guide! I will give it a try at some point :D

Wow, this game loves judging your actions without telling you you're being judged.
If things are trying to kill me, I'll kill them. And now I'm being punished...
They should've at least made the boars passive until attacked.
