The Derail Valley update introduces a new way to customise your trains with private locomotives and demonstrators. You can now own unique pre-production locomotives called demonstrators, which are found in wrecked states throughout the game, most commonly hidden in stations. These demonstrators are owned by the Derail Valley Railway Museum, and you can buy them by purchasing the museum license for $15,000. Once restored, these locomotives become work trains that you can request via comms radio. They will never despawn, but they can only be serviced manually and are not covered by DVRT insurance.

The demonstrators need to be restored through a multi-step process: find and re-rail the locomotive, tow it to the museum's roundhouse, order missing parts at the museum's office, transport the ordered parts to the museum using a utility vehicle, install the parts at the museum, perform basic repairs and refuel the locomotive, and finally, apply a new paint job (optional).

You can purchase missing parts at the museum's office after reaching step 3 of the restoration process. The purchased parts will be delivered to the Machine Factory's loading track, where you can pick them up using a utility vehicle and transfer them to the museum.

Each demonstrator comes with four new paint jobs: Primer, Abandoned Demo, New Demo, and New DVRT. You can paint a locomotive after reaching step 7 of the restoration process. Painting is done using a sprayer gun and paint cans (purchased Separately) found at the museum's paint station. The body and cab can be painted separately, and exploded demonstrators will not retain their paint job after being repaired.
