Overview
While most of you probably already know of this mod or have it installed, I thought I might as well post it here too so that players, especially players that are new to the community, have easier access to it. This is a project I've been working on and off on for over a year now, dedicating a lot of my time to it. This mod is a means of helping out the community and just making the game's experience better overall. Special thanks to olsu for making the settings UI when pressing F1.
What does Velo do?
Velo is a general-purpose utility mod for SpeedRunners. It allows you to customize various aspects of the game and provides useful practice tools. It is not a cheating tool, any physics modifications are disabled in online multiplayer and will generally be watermarked. At this point, it is full of so many different features that it's hard to list them all and you will likely never need to make use of all of them. Let me just list what I would consider its flagship features instead:
  • Settings UI: A user interface that allows you to directly change all of Velo's settings directly in-game with instant feedback. Each module has its own little window of settings you can freely move around and show/hide. Just press F1 in order to access it.
  • Velo leaderboard: It's a system that allows players to easily create and share time trial runs with each other and keep track of their rankings. It replaces the speedrun.com leaderboard and makes submitting and verifying runs way more streamlined. There is no further setup required and you can just hop right into a solo run session and do some runs while Velo automatically records, validates, categorizes and submits them as you play. Press F2 in order to access the leaderboard itself. From there, you can click on any run to watch a replay (you can even watch it frame by frame and enable an input display) or assign it to a ghost to race against (Velo ghosts are also completely lag-free!). Make sure to also take a look at the rules page. Velo will very pedantically check for these rules and a lot of care has been taken in order to make cheating as hard as possible!
  • Auto update: When launching the game, it will automatically check for new Velo updates. If found, you can directly install them by just clicking "Yes" and it will automatically relaunch your game.
  • Savestates: They allow you to save the current state of the player and level and to then restore it at any time by just pressing a hotkey. Savestates are even allowed to be used to set up 1 lap runs (with some cooldown restrictions).
  • Recoloring: You can recolor various graphics in the game, like grapples, lasers, popups, chat, etc.. For (almost) any color you can change, you can even specify a color transition in order to make the graphic cycle through different colors.
  • Speedometer: Shows your current speed.
  • Angle display: Shows your swing release angle.
  • Hitbox indicator
  • Input display
  • Tile outlines: Shows outlines around the tilemap. Looks best without graphics and dark/black backgrounds.
  • Blindrun simulator: Simulate and practice blindrunning in solo.
  • Performance enhancements: Enable these in order to boost your FPS, prevent framedrops and reduce input delay. Depending on your case, you may expect a pretty decent improvement.
  • Hot reload: Allows you to modify the .xnb contents of your game and directly apply them in-game without having to restart it.
  • Physics modifications: Play around with changing the physics of the game, play in slow motion, remove the speed cap, remove the grapple cooldown, reduce gravity, etc..
  • (TAS: This is currently still in development and more features will come in future. Currently you can more or less just play the game frame by frame without really having a way to record it in a TAS-like manner. The TAS videos I have created were done using a different tool.)
Getting started
Installation
After downloading the mod's ZIP file, just drag its contents into the game's installation folder and let it replace files if asked. See the contained "_README.txt" file for more detailed instructions.
How to use Velo?
After installing Velo, you will first of all notice that nothing has really changed at all. This was a design choice and without having touched any settings, the game will behave pretty much like default. In order to access the settings UI, press F1. For every of Velo's modules, you will see an own little window. In case you closed a window and can't find it anymore, look out for the window titled "UI" (it will probably be in the top left corner). From there you can directly show/hide all the windows. In order to change a hotkey, left click on the box that says "N/A" by default and press the desired hotkey. By right clicking this box you can unassign this hotkey again. Just play around with all the different settings from there. Tooltips for most of them are provided. In order to create color transitions, see the contained "_README.txt" file for more detailed instructions. To access the Velo leaderboard, press F2.
