As of starting this guide I've just recently fallen in love with this game! I've failed one playthrough, gotten a true ending on my second, and now I'm looking forward to making more characters!

But... I've already gotten tired of looking at the default character! Especially when he doesn't fit a lot of the character concepts I have in mind. So the character appearance mod available in the workshop is heaven-sent and means I can find a better look for whatever character I want to make! Whether I want to play as a female-appearing character, or a more evil dude, or take advantage of one of the more unique & distinct designs available in the game.

I know there's an upcoming update with a portrait pack so we'll see how useful / necessary this remains, but for now I'm really enjoying the way this enhances my replays and I hope you will to!

Alright, here's a very quick breakdown on how to get this mod running.

First, subscribe to the Character Appearance mod on Steam Workshop.

By default, Hero's Adventure prevents you from unlocking achievements while using mods -HOWEVER, this next mod allows you to bypass that so you can enjoy a unique appearance and still unlock achievements for future runs. Highly recommend it.

Next, launch the game. In the bottom right of the main menu, hit the Steam Workshop button. Then, tick the box on the two mods there (or just the one if you skip the Achievement one).

Either load into an existing character or make a new character. If you make a new character you'll still see the warning informing you mods will prevent you from unlocking achievements. As of my last test (11/12/24), the other mod I mentioned above does successfully bypass the block.



Upon loading in, you'll have a new item in your Inventory. Equip it. As soon as you do, you'll be presented with a host of menu options to change your character appearance! Unequip it when you're done or the menu will reappear after a certain amount of time passes.



Special Note: If you want to reset your appearance, it's the last option on the last page of the menu.

With these confusing menu options before you, use the rest of this guide to help you navigate them! The next sections translate all the menu options in order so you know what you're clicking on and then each sect/faction is broken into a specific section that translates the available character options and provides a preview of the sprites & portraits so you don't have to click around!

Feel free to read through or directly search for the name of the character you're hoping to embody to see if they're available and where to find them. Some are straightforward and some are not where you'd expect them to be. You might encounter some minor spoilers based on seeing where certain sprites are located.

A few extra notes on how these appearances actually look in practice:

• Many of the characters have cool, unique idle animations! Fun!
  
• Unfortunately, the portraits and sprites don't have the same expressions and animations as the main character, so you'll miss out on that.
  
• Also, you won't have an overworld sprite on the map while using this mod and your gathering animation will still show your original sprite.

Despite the drawbacks above. I've still had a blast with it and hope you will too! Remember to click on the images to expand them!
