Basic Single Player Guide

Unrailed is a daunting game, and even more so if you are alone in your quest to reach the terminal station that will mark the end of your journey. So here's a quick guide for those of you who are starting out solo for any reason.

1. Basic Mechanics
Unrailed 2 has quite a few game mechanics, some old and some new.

1. Gather resources to craft railway tracks.
This game mechanic is the same as the first game. 1 tree = 1 wood, 1 rock = 1 iron, combine them and you gain 1 railway track. For this reason, you would generally want to mine only as much as you chop.

2. Compressing resources.
This is one of the new mechanics introduced in Unrailed 2. You can feed 5 woods to a deer or athe Compressor Wagon to combine 5 woods into 1 compressed wood (and 5 irons into its compressed counterpart). By compressing resources, you can stock up to 5x as many resources in your Storage Wagon. However, note that a compressed wood can't be used to build a bridge.

3. The train speeds up at the same rate per level
For this reason, long levels (maps with double arrow icon) are worth more distance and preferred for those of you who are trying to achieve a high score.

4. The train speed resets when you go to the next biome.
Every biome has a fixed starting speed, so it is recommended to delay your trip to the biome junction as much as you can.

5. The train speeds up with more players.
Bots are counted, so you can slow down the train by removing them in the middle of a level.[/i]

6. The train speeds up when there are more tracks ahead.
This mechanic also existed in Unrailed 1. To be specific, your train slows down when there are only 2 tracks ahead, and speeds up when there are 8 tracks or more.

2. Make the most of the bot
1. Use emoji as as soon as a new level starts.
There is always a fog covering the player's screen at the start of each level. Bots, however, are not hindered by this. Give a command to your bot while you wait for the fog to clear up.

2. Switch with bot frequently.
The bot changes its action depending on what you are holding as it takes your place:
  • Nothing/Wood/Iron: Collect resources on the ground, refuel your wagons, fill the storage, lower the tracks from Crafter Wagon, and water the wagons when there is nothing else to do.
  • Tracks: Build railway tracks towards the station.
  • Axe: Chop nearby trees and destroy obstacles when there is nothing else to do.
  • Pickaxe: Mine nearby rocks and destroy obstacles when there is nothing else to do.
  • Bucket: Water all wagons and refill bucket when empty.
Tip: I recommend swapping the default button with R1 for easy access on controller.

3. Respawn the bot when necessary.
This is done by switching to bot, open the pause menu, and select Respawn. This will make the bot respawn at a random spot near the train.

This emoji tells the bot where you want it to go. Simple, yet versatile. The bot's behavior pattern has also been improved as per the latest update.

4. Try the Flag emoji
The flag emoji lets the bot do more complex tasks, including mining, chopping, clearing obstacles, building bridges, and so on. It is by far the most versatile command in the game.

3. Find the best route
1. Start from Monorail Meadows.
Even after unlocking the next biomes, it is recommended to start from the Monorail Meadows due to the difficulty spike the later biomes provide.

2. Pick the hardest, but doable map.
Generally, you should go for the hardest map that you can handle at your train's current speed. You will be rewarded with more bolts, better rewards, and better items in shop. Also, Extreme maps always reward you with cartridge when you clear it.

3. Maximize your bolt income.
  • Clearing levels (Easy = 2, Medium = 3, Hard = 4, Extreme = 5)
  • Completing tasks (up to 3 bolts per level)
  • Finding bolts in map (1 per level, or 2 for maps marked with double bolts)
  • Feeding the Pig Wagon (at the cost of resources)

4. Pick the Easy level when your train is going fast.
But, consider saving bolts and choosing Biome Junction if you find that the train is going way too fast for you to handle. As mentioned in the Basic Mechanics, entering the next biome will reset your train speed. (Entering the boss level also has reduces your train speed for some reason.)

4. Upgrade your wagons wisely
1. Upgrade your Crafter Wagon.
While there are more wagon types in Unrailed 2, one thing remains the same: you should prioritize upgrading the Crafter Wagon so that you can craft enough tracks for you to place ahead.

2. Grab the Ghost Wagon.
As your train gets longer, every turn in the path becomes a choke point. Ghost Wagon has the potential to reduce the collision of your long train to nothing but the engine. It is also cheap to upgrade.

Tip: Consider upgrading Ghost Wagon only up to level 3 and when there is a discount. After that, use Supercharger instead.

3. Find the wagons that work best for you.
Getting new wagons is all about reducing your workload. Consider the pros and cons of each wagon and see if their purchase is worth more than simply upgrading your Crafter Wagon. The old meta of using two Dynamite Wagons is a good way to start.

5. Get your starting cartridges
1. Gather hexnuts.
Unrailed 2 introduced a roguelike mechanic where you need to gather hexnuts to power you up for the next run. You receive 1 hexnut for every level you cleared and 3 for every biome junction. Hex Tree Wagon also produces hexnuts over time.

2. Purchase your starting cartridges and extra slots.
After gathering enough hexnuts, you can purchase any cartridge that you have previously obtained. It will then be available as your starting cartridge.

3. Specialize your setup.
Generally, you would want to set different roles for you and the bot (e.g. player transports items, bot chops and mines). This will also determine what cartridges you pick during the run.

4. Complete your cartridge collection.
Even a seemingly useless cartridge may prove to be useful in specific situations. Gotta get 'em all!

6. Read the handbook

Thank you for the guide.
The required number of hex nuts is incorrect.
The second cartridge slot - 50 hexnuts.
Brute Force cartridge - 20 hexnuts.

The bot now handles obstacles such as moles, webs, bones and canyon mountains. It will also automatically extinguish the train in wagon mode if there's nothing else to do.

Let me know if I got the number of hexnuts wrong since I pulled those numbers from memory.

I didn't put routes/wagons/powerups in this guide since I feel that it will ultimately depend on the player's style. But let me know if you want me to make a guide for those as well.
