Stab the trees with your metal object, stab the rock nodes for rocks, don't tame if you're beginner or new to game. You want the meat that is dropped by the wolves, deer, and bears. Craft a spear with logs for basic weapon, then start the process of building a base out of ice.
For the ice, you'll need a mining tool; preferably the base or metal pickaxe. Mine ice as the materials differ between small amounts each five hits on the node gives you materials you can craft to beyond imagination.

Base building can be fun with your friends or your enemies, I mean you could technically starve them of any materials, food, and water resources. Try your hand at fishing, It could be a fun adventure. There's a trader with the $ Money/Cash symbol, the trader will buy your wares and sell cheap wares when you're in need.

Defend yourself from the wildlife; Namely the polar & grizzly bears. Deer are fine, about 2.8 minutes of stabby with either your basic or hands. Wolves differ. Stab, Block, Stab, Block, Skedaddle.

Yetis are far more dangerous than I had expected, I died 17 times attempting to run to the next trader that's located in a former shopping clothing store that has vehicle wreckage strewn as a defense deterrent against the local wildlife namely Yetis, Bears, and the giant wolves. Looks like the Yeti's have about the same health points as two polar bears, defense is about the same as the Polar Bear King Miniboss.

Polar Bear King: I managed to use roughly 27 bolts with the light crossbow, took about 4.25 minutes to completely kill the king bear. Loot is very high with the King. The light crossbow is average 76, but highly 109 to the head.

Those giant wolves on the other hand have a habit of sneaking right up to you from behind in a pack of two, threes, and even quadruple. Be careful while scavenging in the ruins if you've started in the city map with the plane wreckage north of the trader where you spawn.

What you want for needs: Base with fire, keep a ice chest nearby stocked to the brim with wood, ice, snow to craft water bottles, cook food, and fishing. Gold ore is a must but is also good to sell at the trader; one gold ore is 40g. With 40g you can get your basic needs first. Try an apple, they're delicious. Though their spawns are quite hefty.

Edit: Found out you can craft a mallet and improve your building from ice to wood and to stone. Like elements from Stranded Deep & Rust
