C&C Generals and Zero Hour Startup Crash Fix

If you downloaded your C&C Generals and Zero Hour Copy and now can't start your game, this Guide might help you work around that.

Install, Change, Edit, Play
1) Install and Launch C&C Generals & Generals Zero Hour
you'll probably try and launch it and it will either hang up or crash upon start.


2) Enable Compatibility Mode
2.1) In the game folder for Generals, right click on the application file
2.2) Select "Properties"
2.3) In the compatibility tab, enable compatibility mode
2.4) Select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
*make sure it's "Service Pack 2" since the options also allow "Service Pack 3"
2.5) Repeat for Generals Zero Hour
*You can find the game folder from Steam by right clicking on the game in your Steam library and selecting "Browse Local Files"

3) Edit the Options.Ini file
3.1) Go to C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data
*Could also be in C:\Users\[Your Username]\OneDrive\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data
3.2) Open the Options.ini file (Right click : open with "Notepad")
3.3) Add a line saying Resolution = 1920 1080 (Use your screen resolution if it is not 1920x1080)
3.4) Repeat for Generals Zero Hour
*If the INI file isn't inside this folder, please restart the game until it get's written by the game

4) Edit the Steam Launch Options
4.1) In Steam, right click on Generals and select Properties
4.2) In the Advanced Launch Options field add -xres 1920 -yres 1080 (Use your screen resolution if not 1920x1080)
4.3) Repeat for Generals Zero Hour

5) Delete the "dbghelp.dll" file in each game folder

6) Relaunch Generals and exit
*You have to relaunch Generals in order for Generals Zero Hour to work.

Installed GenPatcher, basically did all of this here, game still stays stuck on that launcher window then crashes. FML

little tip, just to clarify
this address might be confusing C:\Users\[Your Username]\OneDrive\Documents\....
should use this rather C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\....

I've made it as far as step 5 but I can't find or don't have the "dbghelp.dll" file. I do have a debugwindow.dll in both game folders which I have already tried removing and generals will not start. I'm using Win10, Any ideas? Where should I find the file in question? Thank you.

@slingblade2021 try restarting the game a few times until the game spawns that file. It took me about three tries for the game to create that ini file.

I have no Option.ini file in step 3.1. Ideas?
