Urge

A bit of Story Direction (no spoilers)
By Master_Sherm
Hey, this game is awesome but like many open world survival games where you discover the story as you play, it can be a bit confusing (and in my experience slightly disheartening) when you just have absolutely no idea whats happening or what to do next.

The creator of this game, EnDrew, has some great gameplay basics guides, but I wanted to put something together to point you in the right direction to get things rolling if you don't want to just wander around aimlessly. I want you to feel absolutely free to take this guide and make it better for new players, I'm just making it because I love this game and one doesn't exist.

This guide takes heavy inspiration from youtuber named Chesh who made a video called "THE HORRORS OF URGE EXPLAINED | Urge Explained" where he talks about some of the early game story details and locations and theorizes what's going on here. While I do recommend this video, it's too spoiler heavy for someone who wants to learn things for themselves and put together the pieces to make their own theories, and this video takes that away from you. So this is basically my take on what you should do when you first start a game to kind of get a grip of the situation but not rob you of one of the coolest gaming experiences of all time. I'll be keeping story details to an absolute minimum and mostly just try to point you in the right direction to discover the Horrors of Urge for yourself.

-Prologue-
Take your time and look around this area, explore the whole house and backyard. There's not much for you to pick up here, but there's a few details you don't want to miss. Environmental storytelling is the name of the game here. Don't worry about being on a time limit despite what may happen ,you have time to look around, just keep an eye on your hunger, thirst, and Urge meters.

The biggest one is the easiest to miss, and I didn't find this until I'd already spent about 70 hours playing the game.

After you've explored the house and backyard, walk past the water tower at the back of the property, to a thicket of bushes and interact with what you find in there. Yeah, it surprised me too.
-Coming to-
This is the most 'spoiler heavy" section in this guide, but this is all stuff that could happen in you first 10 minutes of gameplay so you've probably already seen it happen, if not, just finish the prologue before continuing.

There's a couple details you don't want to miss during your escape (spoiler, you don't) just keep an eye out while you try to keep your vehicle steady.

When you awake, you'll hear a loud sound, depending on where you wake up. If you go outside and look to the sky, you might see what's happening. You may discover the end result of this later.

After you come to, gameplay is going to dictate that you get adjusted to the new environment you've found yourself in and acquiring the basics of survival. For the story, locate where you wrecked your vehicle and search the house. (**This is for later as you will need a healing item and a weapon, but you may want to crack open the concrete manhole in the backyard, hop down and follow the concrete pipe pathway, but I wouldn't do this on day 1 as a noob.)

Right now, your only real lead is the direction you and ____ were driving when trying to "leave" this place. Continue down this road, and you'll see a church and a couple houses along the road, and soon, you'll see the RV that ____ was driving. Search it. There's 2 more details very close by, walk the direction of the exit of the RV to find one, and the second is sitting in a wrecked semi truck a bit further that direction. I somehow managed to play this game for almost 40 hours before finding this, and it is absolutely necessary that you search this RV.

This will give you your next lead to follow.

Bare in mind, that there's going to be lot's of story items that you'll find randomly in this town that you are in, some of these feel like you should find them first after having searched the house that you crash into but it really doesn't make a difference unless you can't figure out how to make your first axe. Pretty much everything in the game is worth exploring.
-The Dusty Trail-
Pursue your next lead. While on the way there, you may notice a crashed airplane on the highway adjacent to where your headed, search it well, it's absolutely necessary. Once finished, continue to where you're going. Enter the semi trailer in the warehouse. This will give you a hint on where to go next, but it's extremely vague.

Follow the dirt road next to the warehouse back into the Floridian wilderness until you reach what looks like a dried pond/creek with a kind of wooden ramp setup on the other side of it, this is how you know you're going in the right direction. Follow this dirt road until you've reached your destination, and search the place. It's worth noting, you will need a weapon, and a bladder nearly full of piss may help. You'll be visiting this place again soon.

Inspect the note left by _____ and use the gps you found in the RV to locate this area. This is a good time to setup a camp somewhere to stash your items and insure your basic needs are taken care of.

Locating this area with your GPS will give you your next lead.

-Something Here Just Isn't Right-
After you've located where the gps coordinates are taking you, you'll find another story item, that want's you to go right back to where you found the coordinates in the first place. Follow those directions and inspect the area.

Amongst the items here is a vhs tape, labeled in some kind of code. Somewhere, you'll find a document that I believe is used to decipher this code, but you'll just have to look around. One item you find will highlight several areas that warrant investigation, I'd highly recommend checking them out as soon as you can, but you'll have to find them first. One will require a keen eye and heavy hands to discover what lies within.

At the back of this area, you'll find a well with a ladder in it. When you reach the end of this path it'll spit you out into a kind of runoff reservoir with a vehicle in it that will allow you to reach an area you'll need to go to later. Be sure you have what you need with you (ex. fuel, water, healing items, a weapon) because where this paths ends up is going to be very far from where you came from, if you choose to get the vehicle out of the reservoir.

A good place to hit after this is going to be at the end of the dirt road next to where you crashed your car. Search that whole area once you break through the barrier.

(WEAPON SPOILER) And a little bonus, if you hug the kudzu vegetation wall next to where this dirt road leads and walk for about 10 seconds until you see a piss pond in front of a cave, walk into the cave, past the hanging corpse, and take the first left, and chop thru the barriers, you'll find a true staple of any apocalypse, and another story item.
-What's Next?-
This is up to you. I personally would start gearing up, exploring the caves, and begin my urlid refining process. This is a good way to get started for understanding the story, but it feels like I haven't even scratched the surface. I've got my theories on what's goin on here, but part of the fun is putting the pieces together yourself. I haven't even visited Urlando, Dreadland, or Milfort yet.

But I've got one last piece of advice for you.

There's an island off the coast that you're going to want to use that airboat to visit.
Thanks for reading!
Let me know if this was helpful, or if you have any information you feel should be on a guide like this. And if wanted more to go on and don't mind spoilers, watch Chesh's video.

Good luck!

@Alpha Kido nahhhhhh I thought you were talking about the one behind the intro house, the one next to the rv is an "empty" grave intended to be for... You? it's unclear but it seems to be implied.

Diggable pits have a specific look and dig promt, you'll see.

@grandmaster_sherm is the grave by the RV supposed to be something you can dig up? I feel like the context clues imply there's something buried there but since it's not working for me idk if i'm just doing the wrong thing or what

@Alpha Kilo Have to keep it vague for the sake of the experience, check out that youtube video I mentioned if you want spoilers. Excavateable areas look a little different than most dirt and actually give you a prompt to dig when you look at them. You just look down at the area and start smacking it with your shovel. If it's not working, it might be a bug because that's never happened to me.

the directions are not particularly helpful. What's the deal with the grave? I have the shovel and I'm trying to dig but it won't let me?

I don't know why no one else has commented on this, so I'm gonna be the first to say thank you so much for this. I love guides like this in open world games, and in my experience they're kinda rare. Thank you for putting your time and effort into this!
