"After I came to, the was nothing, I hadn't the faintest clue where my boys were. The sound of rifle fire had faded, I no longer heard the screaming shots of artillery. They, the dead, were the only company I had, and yet they could not speak. They were at rest, and I was not yet about to disturb their rest, not even the dead Yanks. They have now seen the end of war. I walked around for a short while trying to get my heading. I trailed the bodies, it was strange to see all these men I knew, or had never known to exist, lay there so peacefully, after the battle, even though they couldn't speak, nor move, the dead were leading me somewhere. I think my camp is just over the hill. I think I'll rest here for the evening. I've seen enough for today. I'm going to watch the sun set. I could desert if I wanted to, they probably already think I'm dead. Yet there is a feeling, a charge to my soul, I have a duty to my girl, and to my company, with whom one day, I may sleep next to."
