Planets, blocks and you
By Node
Attention all platform managers. The perils of the various planets are vast. It's in your best interest to understand what the different blocks do and how to deal with them. Please read this memo and delegate to your workers accordingly.

Main
Each planet has different types of blocks. The blocks that they have in common and share are all the resource blocks as well as meta progression blocks (things like the yellow/green/purple resources which you can upgrade at the main screen as well as your platform.).

However each planet has it's own set of hazards. Blindly running into, for example, the frost planet will yield a crop of many dead workers very quickly. So use this to help you understand the mechanics better and dig deep!

Coal
Allows you to dig deeper. usually you need 4, but the tier 3 tech will allow you to dig with only 3 coal.
Iron
Used in everything. Prioritize this to begin with. Get lots of it.
Swarmlit
Rarer than iron. Used also in mostly everything. To start you don't need much but as you start upgrading turrets and building more buildings, it will become more and more in demand.
Yellow
A common yellow resource used in upgrading the meta progression
Green
A rarer green resource used in upgrading the meta progression
Purple
Toughest to acquire purple resource. This will be the one in highest demand and always be the thing that's stopping you
Tech
Allows building of additional structures. On floors 1 and 2 there are lots of them, but they get tougher to find the deeper you go.
Cavernous planet events
The cavernous has a few unique properties. Before we dive into the blocks, let's talk about the various events that can happen:

  • Solar Eclipse - Unable to use any day time abilities. This isn't that bad honestly.

  • Terrabor - Worms periodically spawn even during the day. This can be really nasty and if you get bad RNG, basically prevent you from evening mining during the day.

  • Earthquake - Periodically the screen will shake, and any "loose" blocks above you that aren't supported by another have a chance to fall. The falling block will one-shot a worker if it hits them. For this reason, if you see earthquake, make sure you're mining from the top down and don't leave blocks above your head. If you're aware of this event it's not that bad.

  • Arachnor - The big bad boss of the level. Have a couple Mini Gun turrets ready! First time it appears, will run away at 50% health. Then a couple nights later he'll return (still at 50% health), at which point you kill it.

Alien
If you mine this, a monster will appear which will also drop two swarmlite. Just don't mine it and it's never an issue. But if you have guards nearby and are in dire need of swarmlite, go ahead and mine it. Take note however, this monster from this block is much more difficult than the monsters which spawn from eggs. Highly suggest having multiple soldiers on stand-by ready to deal with it. It will be a "red" looking monster, indicating maybe it's an "elite" version of the normal monsters.
Monster Eggs
Spawns little monsters randomly, up to 5 or so blocks away. A bit tougher to mine out as they take a few more hits then normal dirt. Later difficulties they can take a large pounding before being destroyed. If there are currently no active monsters spawning, you should prioritize this all the time
Spawning monster
Created from monster eggs. This shows a location where a monster is about to appear.
You should instantly go for this all the time as soon as you see one, even if it means you need to stop mining whatever it is you're mining.
Shield
This make all blocks in a 3x3 grid adjacent to it very tough to mine. You should either directly go for this if it's in your way, or flat out ignore it. If there is only a single tile to mine within its protection radius, just go for that single thing instead then move on. If there are multiple, then definitely mine it out to prevent the protection. Also the oscillator makes it super easy to mine these. As does using the resonant laser to instantly zap it.
Lava Jet
Periodically shoots flames 3 tiles out in all directions where there's a red circle on it. Comes in various forms... can have 1 flame jet or up to a maximum of 4. You won't see the three and four variants until you get into higher difficulties or go much deeper. At difficulty 10 you might start seeing 4-way jets as early as 50m deep. If you're unable to safely mine it, it's best to stay away from the jet, wait for it to fire, then immediately focus mine it with your workers. Typically you can bust them before they fire again.
Boulder
If you are under this and mine out the tile below it, you will instantly die. You can crush many workers this way. Sad day. Never mine from the bottom. Mine it out from the sides or the top. If you don't have extra vision, be VERY careful about mining upwards as you never know if there's a boulder above the tile you're mining... Better yet, just don't mine upwards until you get the technology tier 1 vision upgrade.
Webbing
Mine these out as you come across them. If you leave them behind they slowly start to duplicate themselves and can start taking over the zone. Easy to mine and never an issue as long as you stay on top of them.
Sand
Basically like a boulder, but delayed. As soon as you mine out what's beneath it, it will shake a little bit and after a few seconds, will drop. If you have workers below, they'll get killed.
Frozen planet events
The frozen planet has a few unique properties. Before we dive into the blocks, let's talk about the various events that can happen:

  • Polar Night - Unable to use any night time abilities. As of version 57.4.9, this is by far the worst event in the game. Because night abilities yield so much damage output, this will severely cripple you. Honestly not even sure how to beat the later difficulties (8+) due to this mechanic, as even fully loaded turrets don't seem enough to stop the enemies.

  • Snow Storm - Worker speed and actions are reduced. It's basically like the snow storm block but over the entire zone. Not too bad though.

  • Freezing Storm - Randomly some frozen blocks will appear throughout the zone. Also not that bad. If a worker happens to be on a tile which a frozen block appears they won't die but rather will just be stuck there until you free them

Snowfall
Mostly a nuisance block. If you mine out anything under it, it will drop snow directly below it. The snow will slow the effectiveness of your workers. After a few seconds a new snow block will appear on top of the next available surface, building up a snow wall of sorts. Just mine them out as you come across them to avoid them being a bigger problem later.
Frozen Explosion
Always ignore these things. If you mine one, all workers surrounding it, as well as all other blocks, are instantly frozen. Freeze lasts several seconds. However for each tile you fall after freezing, you take substantial damage. If there are a couple tiles of empty space below you and you freeze, you're at extreme risk of dying. Furthermore, the frozen blocks it leaves behind are a major pain to mine out as they're very durable. Ultimately, do everything you can to avoid mining these out... let them rest in peace. If you absolutely must mine one, make sure there's no space below your miner and come at it from the side while having solid ground right below you. Or, zap it with the resonant laser day time ability.
Freezing Jet
Like the lava counterpart. Except this one freezes your workers. It's only tragic if you get frozen and you have empty space below you, causing you to take fall damage. Try to take them out from an angle they aren't spewing, or at least make sure there is ground below you if you must take it head on.
Snowstorm
Creates a 2-tile radius snowstorm around it. This just slows your workers down and halves their mining speed. Not that big of a deal really but it can become a quick problem if a worm is about to spawn, or there are monsters that are starting to thaw within its radius. Take these out when it's safe.
Frozen monster
Once you get within 2 tiles of these frozen monsters, they being to "thaw". It takes awhile, but eventually they'll be a little chomper dude that runs around wrecking havoc. At night, they will re-freeze too if you've not dug them out. If they are along your mining path, make it a priority to mine them before they unfreeze.
Ice Shard
Treat this like a boulder. As soon as you mine it, a large frozen spike drops directly below it, inflicting massive damage to whatever it hits. Usually it will break a block below it, but some tougher blocks it might only just severely damage it. Your workers will get insta killed.
Tips, Tricks, Strategies
  • Never build more than one factory. Diminishing returns and cost just doesn't make it worth it.

  • Boulders - These are actually very useful! I always mine out the ground underneath them from the SIDE. This make the boulder fall, destroying the tile right below it. Two tiles for the price of one!

  • Generally speaking, you want to start off always mining in a downward direction. This is because at night, worms move left/right. You need to be able to have space to avoid them. if you start out digging to the right or left, you're just making a perfect tunnel with no where to escape to get all your workers insta-killed.

  • Until you have visibility 2 from the tier 1 technology, try to avoid mining upwards. You can't see boulders above you! It's a sure-fire way to kill your workers. Or you can always take the gamble...

  • The fastest way to get purple resources is to simply beat the level. On top of that, getting the qualifications done yields the most purple reward of anything. It's the best way to start finishing the meta progression

  • As you go up in difficulty, so too does the number of creatures at night. Also blocks start to become a bit tougher to mine. Lastly, more disrupting tiles appear more often. For example, on difficulty 10 you're going to see shield tiles, lava spitters, and the blocks are really tough to mine out, all on the very first 50m depth.

  • Elite workers are amazing. Try to get them right away.

  • Nightbay and Drone station are absolutely amazing... maybe best combo. But when you get the last qualification done for the Disruptor (turret does +300% attack speed), always take that. It will allow you to completely decimate the enemy forces. You can launch drones, boost a turret (or if no boost yet, use something like machine gun), pop nightbay, and repeat! Your damage output drastically goes up with Nightbay. Always, always take it.

  • Most buildings are pretty worthless. Aim for 1 factory > barracks > barracks > barracks > barracks. After that 1 tech building, and prioritize the mining upgrade first, then speed, then visibility. They're super cheap and help so much.

  • Use Mortar all the time. Make it a starting tech. Makes the first 2 nights a breeze, and will get you through the third night while taking some core damage.

  • Don't fret about placing temporary buildings. Short on turrets but you're saving for some other technology? If you need some firepower, just drop a turret down. Or if you need some temporary night ability to get you through the night, place it down. It costs 1 iron to sell something but you get full price back. Iron in this game is hardly an issue if you've got 10 miners running around.

  • Daybay is also really great. Combine it with the resonant laser to quickly clear those tough tiles! Shield tiles, monsters about to spawn you can't get to, etc. Zap something, daybay, zap again. Also works really great with the Turbo Station. Boost your factory for really fast iron production, daybay, then do it again!

  • Drone station - Just get it. Make 5 of them. You'll thank me later. Also combine with Nightbay and have 5 of these... becomes screen clearing until you're in the higher difficulties

  • From @Anodder - You can use the resonant laser to destroy the normally indestructible walls. This can be very helpful when the layout of a floor is particularly bad and opening up another passage reduces the distance to the platform significantly.

  • Lots of other stuff I could list but I wanted this guide to be about planets and blocks and yet... here I am on a big rabbit trail talking about all kinds of other stuff :) So stopping for now.

Very cool guide! I think you missed the sand block where if you destroyed the block underneath it, the sand will wobble for a few seconds before it falls to the ground.

For the factories, I would say that if you plan on going very deep (350+), and building the factories only on ground floor, then you may want to have 2 or 3. It helps quite a bit since the initial 12 iron is paying back big time.
