Are you ready to ruin the fun and just get through the stages to collect the tapes?
Great.

Here's what I did:
1. Guess on the first pull. Whether or not you get it correct, move on to step 2.
2. Use press your luck until temporary score reaches 10.
The monster doesn't move fast enough to ever catch you, but only if you go to 10. It's usually early enough at this point to let all the numbers fall off so you don't even have to guess what the number is.
3. Use the lights, then press your luck. Do this til all three of your light uses are gone. The light completely stops the monster, so you don't have to worry about time or waiting for all the numbers to fall off.
After all that, you should come out with 22 points (unless you were wrong with first guess). This is generally enough to pull the lever to exit the stage. If not, you gotta do one (or a couple more) guesses. But at that point, the monster may be too close to use press your luck.

It's a very simple game and I love the art and atmosphere. Just getting the tapes was fun enough for me.
Enjoy!

Yeah, but you can press your luck one more time before using the lights as far as I could test. If I get really good numbers, like 1 or 20, obviously pressing the luck won't be necessary, so you can save that for later.

I had to push my luck mixing these strategies playing in hard mode (20, 30, 40 points). If you play safe, you only save about 2 points in round 1 and 2, so the last round will be a gamble. The monster is still coming at you when your paying the points. It got me twice there, but I still made it through.

This only really matters for hard mode. I played on hard mode hoping there would be an achievement, but the final ones are story-related - which is kinda disappointing, 'cuz the optimal strategy is just to play on easy until you get all tapes.
