Intro
Greetings everyone,

Unreal Tournament 99 was originally designed for mouse and keyboard, but for those who prefer the feel of a controller, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to set up controller support. Whether you’re playing for nostalgia or discovering this classic for the first time, using a controller can provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience. I will cover key considerations to keep in mind and provide some tips for optimising your gameplay with a controller.
Why Use a Controller?
Some players may wonder why they’d want to use a controller for a fast-paced shooter like UT99. For many, it’s about comfort—whether you’re used to playing on consoles or simply prefer a gamepad, using a controller offers a laid-back way to enjoy the game. Although mouse and keyboard are traditionally more precise, especially in shooters, a controller offers its own appeal with its intuitive layout and relaxed grip. This section will explore the pros and cons of using a controller for UT99.
Preparing for Setup
Before diving into controller gameplay, you’ll need to gather a few things. First, make sure you have a compatible controller—whether it’s an Xbox controller, a PlayStation controller, or a third-party option. Check that your drivers are up-to-date, and ensure your controller is properly paired with your PC.

For this guide, I'm using an Xbox One controller, wireless connection via Bluetooth, Steam will auto-adapt depending on what controller you are using and this guide is essentially controller type agnostic.
Let's Do This
Alright, (make sure your controller is still connected and hasn't turned off)

Step 1:
Navigate to the game in your Steam Library

Step 2.1.1:
Click on the 'Controller' like icon over on right-hand-side of your screen

Step 2.2.1:
If this icon isn't visible for any reason, navigate to the 'Metal Gear' ~"When you can't even say, MY NAME!"~ icon right next to it as shown in the screenshot below and click on it

Step 2.2.2:
Next, click on 'Properties' in the drop down, then in the window that opens up, navigate to the 'Controller' tab

Here, make sure you set the 'Override' row drop-down to 'Enable Steam Input'

Step 2.2.3:
Next, click on the 'Configure Controller' link that should be visible right above the drop down you just tweaked

Step 3:
The following window should open up:
Click on the tab marked with the red arrow (right below 'Current Button Layout')

That would take you the this screen below:
Please navigate to the 'Search' tab, this would allow you to search for pre-defined layouts and templates

Step 4:
Now, type in 'UT99 CF88' in the search field:

Clicking on the result shown will result in the layout being downloaded, click on it again to get to the following screen:

Step 5:
Click on 'Apply Layout'. This step is imperative; in case you do not see this option, it means that it has been applied successfully and you're good to go.

Frag 'em and bag 'em, choomba!
Optimising The Controls
Once your controller is set up, optimising the sensitivity and layout is crucial for smooth gameplay. Sensitivity affects how fast you look around and aim, which is critical in a fast shooter like UT99. You may also want to adjust the dead zones, which determine how much you need to move the analog sticks before your character reacts. Smaller dead zones offer more precise control, but may make aiming feel twitchy. Finding the right balance between comfort and responsiveness will ensure you get the most out of your controller experience.

I have it set to 145 in the layout, feel free to tweak it to your play-style by using the slider

Not only this, you can further tweak what each button does using this, via the 'Edit Layout' option, and then publish your own,

I currently have the 'Y' button set to cycle weapon, like COD, to avoid spam I have the 'B' button set to cycle in reverse order, like a doubly linked list :)

The left shoulder button is set to throw weapon, simply because I find the animation funny XD; point being, play around, get comfortable; and don't be afraid to break some test-tubes!
General Tips
Adapting to Controller Gameplay:

Adapting to a controller for UT99 can take time, especially if you’re used to playing with a mouse and keyboard, like me since childhood; age like fine wine, fellas. One of the biggest adjustments will be learning to aim and move fluidly using the analog sticks. Start by practicing strafing and general movement to build muscle memory, and gradually increase your sensitivity as you get more comfortable. With a bit of practice, you’ll find yourself moving and aiming naturally, just like with a gamepad on any modern shooter.

While using a controller in UT99 is perfectly viable, it does come with pros and cons. On the plus side, a controller offers more relaxed and comfortable gameplay, making long sessions easy on the hands. It’s also more intuitive for players used to gamepad setups. However, controllers may limit your reaction times in high-stakes duels or sniping scenarios. But for casual play or reliving the game’s nostalgia, a controller provides a perfectly enjoyable alternative.

Recommended Settings:
While the ideal settings may vary from player to player, here are a few recommendations to get you started. Keep your sensitivity at a medium level to balance speed with control. Map your jump and dodge to easily accessible buttons, as movement is crucial in UT99. Consider using the right analog stick for aiming and the left for movement, as this will mimic the standard FPS control scheme. Adjust these settings based on how comfortable you feel and how the game responds to your controller input.

Closing Thoughts
Experiment with your setup and enjoy the game however you prefer. You, my pookiemon, are the finest creation in all of universe <3

While UT99 was built for mouse and keyboard, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy it with a controller.

Whether you’re a console gamer at heart or just looking for a different way to play, setting up a controller can bring new life to this classic game. With some tweaking and practice, you’ll find a setup that works for you. So grab your controller, fire up the game, and get ready to frag—old-school style!
