The basics
In this guide I will explain to you how the tickbox "Join game in progress" works and how it will influence your MvM experience.

This tiny checkbox here will decide your queue time, whenever you will rejoin a game you just left or not, the quality of your match and the experience you will have.

If you check this box, it will take much less time to get you into a match. This however is influenced by the amount of people there are in your current party. As this number rises, the chance to get into an ongoing game will be much smaller, as the chance of you being put into a new lobby outweighs the chance of being put into an ongoing game that needs X players. Even if you manage to get into an ongoing game as four or five, the quality of the lobby may be low due to people leaving the match because they failed the waves, lost a big amount of credits or because the server may have issues (though this is very unlikely as of 2024)

Though as a party of six, you MAY have the chance to get into an ongoing game. If everyone on the server just left, there is a grace period where you can get into such a lobby as six.
The advantages
The advantages of joining fresh lobbies are simple.
  • Getting a new lobby after you've been kicked
This one should be obvious but it isn't: If you find yourself kicked, even if considered unfairly, you may get back into the same game upon requeuing, which has a high chance of seeing yourself getting kicked in minutes, if not seconds. The kick may be happening so fast that you won't even get to see the MOTD screen before seeing the disconnect message.
  • Rerolling the dice
If you find yourself in a low quality lobby (clueless players, griefing teammates etc.), you have the chance to reroll the dice by simply requeuing. This one however is not 100% guaranteed as your other teammates can also just requeue and you may run into those again.
  • Deciding the outcome of your next lobby
Ongoing lobbies may struggle with the amounts of credits they have. If the previous waves had no scout and the team struggled at holding the front, inexperienced players will have issues mastering the upcoming waves they will face. This point however does not count if you are an exceptional experienced MvM player. Those people should be able to carry any valve made mission if the team ain't griefing/trolling too hard..
  • Farming achievements
This one does not matter for a lot of people but if you happen to complete ongoing lobbies a lot, it will take much longer to get those extremely time-consuming achievements such as Metal Massacre, which requires you to destroy a million robots.
& disadvantages
  • Queue time will be longer on average
This one should be obvious. Depending on the tour and region, you will face longer time queues.
  • 0% chance to "snipe" late wave games
If you are one of those people who constantly gamble for late wave games then you won't get that experience. Though in my experience, actively trying to reach for those lobbies is a waste of time. It takes as much time as completing a mission by yourself. Even if you happen to get into such a game, there is a chance you may just be kicked by the lobby because someone either crashed or they are trying to get a friend into the game.
  • You get into a game that was about to end (and losing your ticket)
You may have the rare chance of joining a game that was about to end. This one may be positive if you want to grind your tour count/complete for loot but negative if you happen to repeat (playing mann up games without the intention of completing those) or if you play for fun.
Common inconceptions and other stuff
  • "Playing from wave 1 gets me a better chance of australiums"
This topic is brought up by new players. be it having an A+ rating every wave, playing from wave 1, playing every mission in order whatsoever. The drop system does not care how you complete games.
  • "but I want to mess with the people who kicked me"
Chances are very slim that you will actually suceed at your plan. Even if you know how to disrupt a mann up lobby, chances is you will get kicked and eventually replaced. Save your time and get into a fresh game.
