Why a new gift guide? They existing ones have done useful work - I've used the one myself, when first time playing - but they could be improved upon. This guide aims to be maximally complete, precise, error-free, AND easy to use + searchable.

Gifts always gain friendship in discrete amounts. Let's call these "Friendship Points", or FP. Here is a single point gained with Mikasa Ackerman, at friendship rank 9:



Higher friendship ranks are harder to achieve:

So, for example, if Zachary is at level 7 friendship, and you gift him a Strange Objet d'Art (6 FP), a Strange Painting (4 FP), and a Strange Vase (3 FP), this will efficiently bring him to rank 8.

Each gift gains from 0 to 6 points, depending on how much someone likes it.

You get hints from dialog, as well as the journal, but these are imprecise. For example, Mikasa will say "Okay, I guess I'll take it" in response to a chess set, but also to alcohol. Yet a chess set gains 1 point with her, while alcohol gains nothing! Which is surely not a trivial difference if you're looking to dump 20 of the same gift on someone.

Raising friendship with Christa eventually gains you the "Friendship" Daily Skill. To be clear: this does NOT affect gains from gifting, or from dialogs. It only affect gains from missions, and is worth having for that reason. The same is true for the "Intensive Cleaning Week" policy from Levi.

More relevantly to gift-giving, you may wish to obtain the "Negotiating Skill" from the Merchant Association Boss, as well as the "Regiment Store Sale" policy from Hannes, as they will lower prices in stores. Gifts can get expensive!

The majority of gift-character combos give 1 friendship point. These are not listed above.

But some gifts are so poorly thought out that you won't get any reaction at all. The dialog will be the same as if you got one point, but the gauge won't budge.

To be sure to avoid that you can consult the complete spreadsheet. But most cases of duds are covered by simple, largely commonsense, rules:

• Don't give flowers to men.
  
• Don't give alcohol to teenagers. This is a Japanese game.
  
• Don't give military manuals and handbooks to the two obvious noncombatants.
  
• Nobody likes the Titan Doll except Titan Shifters, and of course Hange.

I measured the gift values by getting all characters to the same friendship rank, namely 9, then taking screenshots after giving a gift.

In 1920x1080 the horizontal bar showing friendship gain starts at pixel 720, and is essentially (*) 525 pixels long, with each unit of friendship taking up 35 pixels.

((*) By "essentially" I mean the above is a very slight simplification that's off by 2 pixels total.)

Once I converted these to numbers in a spreadsheet, it was possible to have that spreadsheet cough out the graded lists of gifts.

I'm reasonably confident in the accuracy of these results, but it's not impossible that handling this amount of data I made a mistake, either organising screenshots, or converting them to numbers. Please let me know if you notice something needing looking into.

However, before you rush to send me corrections, please make sure the brain is turned on and you've understood the method. Remember that at lower friendship levels the gain will be visually different, due to less friendship needed to next level! Use my savegame to confirm your observations, so as to keep conditions unchanged.
