Merchant-related Achievements
This section contains achievements related to buying and selling stuff and upgrading your weapons.

Standard Issue No More
Upgrade a gun for the first time.

Simply find gun parts, then go to the trader and ask him to upgrade any of your weapons.

A Call to Arms
Fully upgrade a weapon.

I believe you can only complete this achievement by the beginning of the Chapter 6. The game imposes constraints on the number of upgrades that you can do, but slightly lifts them with each new chapter. Just choose a gun that you like using the most and gradually improve it, until you get the achievement.

What're Ya Buyin'?
Purchase your first item from the Merchant.

What're Ya Sellin'?
Sell more than 500 cigarettes worthof items to the Merchant.

You can easily get this achievement by the end of Chapter 3. There are many water pumps at The Road level. Once you get the pump handle, you will be able to use it and thus get many gemstones (rubies, emeralds, sapphires), which cost a lot.

Wartime Looter
Open a special drawer.

Not necessarily a Merchant-related achievement, but it ties well with the "What're Ya Sellin'?" achievement. You just need to open 1 drawer with a small key to get the achievement, but I will list the locations of all the drawers:
  • Chapter 2. Supply Trench, Mining Office.
  • Chapter 3. The Road, End of Road, Homestead (a building with the Merchant inside);
  • Chapter 4. German Trench, German Bunkers;
  • Chapter 5. Town, Waiting Room (western part of map, building next to a save room);
  • Chapter 6. Fort Vaux, 1F, Isolation.

Here is the list of small keys' locations (though I'm not entirely sure, help would be appreciated):
  • Chapter 2. Merchant;
  • Chapter 2. Fort Souville, Casemate Anatole;
  • Chapter 3. The Road, Swamp. In a drawer inside the shack to the far right (credit goes to Midnight Ranger for pointing that out!).
  • Chapter 4. Sold by the Merchant (credit goes to Dandy!).
  • Chapter 5. Town, B, Exit Hall (Sewers);

Avid Gun Collector
Acquire infinite ammo from the Merchant (fully upgrade all weapons).

This one can be a bit tricky. You will only be able to obtain this achievement in the NG+ for two reasons:
  1. There are not enough gun parts in the normal game. In the NG+ the amount of gun parts which you can buy from the Merchant is unlimited.
  2. At the very end of the game you can get a grenade launcher, but, obviously, there is no time nor gun parts to upgrade it.

Here is a list of all the weapons that you need to upgrade:
  1. Ruby pistol: found in the very beginning of Chapter 2.
  2. Luger: can be bought from the Merchant.
  3. Revolver: you need to destroy a barricade at the Support Trench, GF, Reserve Trench West with a 75mm shell. After that, go down the stairs, explore Collapsed Station and get the Revolver.
  4. Rifle: found at Supply Trench, Supply Route.
  5. Elephant Gun: can be bought from the Merchant.
  6. Pump Shotgun: found at Support Trench, GF, Back Door. You also need to find a Gun Cleaning Kit (Pigeon Coop).
  7. Hunting Shotgun: I'm not sure, but I think it can be found at The Road, GF, Woods ==> Hunting Cabin.
  8. Machine Gun: can be found at the beginning of Chapter 4 at Supply Trench, Antechamber after you talk to Marcel.
  9. Spandau: Fort Vaux, 1F, Loft. You need to unlock a door with 3 pronged keys.
  10. Grenade Launcher: Endgame. First, you need to release the carrier-pigeon at Fort Vaux; second, go outside the Mantle to defend the Fort: your lieutenant, at some point, will throw Grenade Launcher at you.
  11. Mustang-11: found at For Vaux, 1F, Observation Tower. Gaston will give you the pistol, but only if you've met him 6 times and given him a cigarette each time. This achievement will be explained later in this guide.
  12. Sweeper: Town, Gun Store, behind a door with a combination lock.

Once you collect and upgrade all the weapons, The Merchant will get a new item at the store: Infinite Ammo Box for 0 cigarettes. Once you purchase it, the achievement is yours!

P.S. I finished a playthrough on the Veteran difficulty with a S+ rank. I've started a NG+, went to see the Merchant and found out he is willing to sell Infinite Ammo Box, though I did not upgrade all weapons. Perhaps, finishing the game with a high rank can help you with this achievement, but I'm not sure at all.

Endings
Sleepers of Fort Vaux
Achieve Ending 1A or 1B.

Paths of Glory
Achieve Ending 2A or 2B.

We Have So Much To Say
Achieve Ending 3A or 3B.

The War to End All Wars
Achieve Ending 4 (secret ending).

There is a phenomenal guide on how to achieve all these endings by BadTea: "How to get different endings in the game". I highly recommend you to check it!
Completion Challenges
These achievements are awarded upon the completion of the game in a certain way.

Poilu
Complete the main story on Veteran difficulty.

This one should not be that difficult. Just play safe and put your knowledge of the game to the test!

Conscientious Objector
Complete the main story without directly killing any enemies with guns, melee, grenades, or hazards.

This one can be quite challenging. You cannot use any weapons at all and explosive barrels. Some words of advice:

  • I'm not sure whether you can or can't kill rats, but I would advise you not to do that, just in case.
  • Once you get the wire cutter, you will unlock the Fire Trench and Trench Infirmary locations. As you know, you need to kill a couple of knights and get the Infirmary key from their dead bodies, but you cannot do that. You must collect a 75mm shell and fire it upon the rubble in the Fire Trench. This way, you get the key without voiding the achievement.
  • In the town sewers in chapter 5, I got chased by the enemies and accidentally killed one, while trying to destroy wooden boards blocking the doorway. Be very careful when you are destroying boards.
  • You need to abandon your post during every battle. In Chapter 1 by figuring out a code (you can find it written on two pieces of paper), in Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 by hiding in a Coward's place (or smth like that, it is a small room underneath a trapdoor), and in Chapter 6 by not defending Fort Vaux.
  • I would advise to do that achievement on a NG+. You will have high stamina, high health and a good knowledge of the game.

Elite Trench Raider
Complete the main story without damaging enemies with guns or grenades (ending 3A, 3B or 4 only).

I would also advise to go for this achievement on a NG+ for one reason only: Cavalry Sabre. It is extremely durable, it deals 2 points of damage and it makes you look very cool!
You can find it at Fort Vaux, GF, Vaux Weapon Storage. You just need to clear the room of gas and find the right combination code.
I don't quite remember which locker it is: either left or middle one. So the code is either:
  • found on a dogtag at the Mortuary, GF;
  • found inside a German Diary at Emergency Surgey, 1F, in the form of a riddle. But if you need it very much, the code is 4512 .

Apparently, burning dead bodies or blowing up rat holes with a grenade do not void the achievement (credit goes to Camelsnake for pointing that out!).

Hairy Day
Complete the main story in 6 saves or under and without checkpoints (no ending 1A or 1B).

This one should not be too hard. I would only advise to save at two points:
  • Before the mine field at Chapter 3;
  • Somewhere during the Chapter 6 (this chapter can be brutal).

Over by Christmas
Complete the main story in under 3 hours (no ending 1A or 1B).

This one is also not too difficult. NG+ playthrough seems preferable. Run whenever you can, don't stray away from your current story objective and go for it only when you've learnt the game, key items' locations and levels themselves. Fresh Puttees are also mandatory, Evasion Tactics — preferable.

P.S. The game only pauses when you hit Esc button. Browsing through the map or inventory still counts as playing, therefore time spent increases.

Combat-related achievements
War Criminal
Kill 2 enemy soldiers with one shotgun blast.

Should'nt be that much of a problem. Just line 2 low-health enemies and take aim.

Modern Warfare
Kill an enemy knight with only the knife.

You need to kill an axe-wielding armored enemy with a knife (found at Support Trench, Mess Hall). Can be a bit of a trouble on a Soldier or Veteran difficulty, but with enough patience, you will get the achievement.

Who Needs Artillery?
Kill 4 enemy soldiers at once with an explosive barrel.

There is a perfect oppotunity to get this achievement during Chapter 1. Here is a screenshot:

Rodent Prevention
Burn 10 enemy corpses.

Missable Achievements
These achievements are the ones which can be easily missed during your playthrough.

Widowmaker
Refind a lost photo twice.

That's what you need to do to get the achievement:

  1. Chapter 3, The Road, Camp location. Talk to a prisoner by the fence. He asks you to find his wife's photo.

  2. Go to the location called River, then go under the Bridge. There is a small room. Find the photo there.

  3. Go back to the Camp and give the prisoner his photo.

  4. Chapter 4, Support Trench, Reflecting Pool. Kill the Knight and then interact with his body: you will find the same photo, but bloodstained.

The Harvest of Battle
Kill 25 enemies in the trench run sequence.

During Chapter 4, after shelling german positions and finding every soldier at Blockhouses, you will need to get to the new Frontline. Eventually, you will charge enemy positions.
I really suggest making a save before that and bringing your biggest guns. You should get this achievement easily, if you commit to it.

The Sacred Way
Use the transport truck to travel to 3 different locations in Verdun.

Can be obtained at the beginning of Chapter 6. Once you leave the Town, there will be a truck in the Thicket with the Merchant standing next to it. Just take a ride to The Road, the Frontline and back to the Town.

Uncomfortably Numb
Obtain maximum health and stamina levels.

Stimulants:
  • Chapter 2. Fort Souville, B, Combat Shelter. Medic gives it to you if you bring him a bandage;
  • Chapter 3. The Merchant;
  • Chapter 4. Behind Enemy Lines, Medical Tent Anatole;
  • Chapter 5. Town, Waiting Room (a house near the Merchant), inside a drawer;
  • Chapter 6. Fort Vaux, 1F, Isolation, Cell #3.

Morphine:
  • Chapter 2. Support Trench, Infirmary, a locker to the right.
  • Chapter 3. The Merchant;
  • Chapter 4. Not sure, but I think it's at Support Trench, Blockhouse Desire (close to Support Trench East). Bring the Medic a disinfectant bandage, and he'll give you morphine.
  • Chapter 4. German Trench, German Bunkers, inside a drawer.
  • Chapter 6. Fort Vaux, 1F, Emergency Surgery.

Indoctrinated
View all 15 pieces of propaganda.

I have written a separated guide about poster locations, which you can consult by clicking here!

American Horsepower
Obtain the Mustang-11 from Gaston.

You need to give one cigarette to Gaston each time you meet him. Here's the list of locations where he can be found:
  1. Chapter 2. Supply Trench, Arbory;
  2. Chapter 2. Fort Souville, B, Combat Shelter;
  3. Chapter 3. Fort St. Michel, Panic Fort;
  4. Chapter 4. Support Trench, Sleeping Quarters;
  5. Chapter 5. Town, Cemetery Alley;

  6. Chapter 6. Fort Vaux, 1F, Observation Hall ==> Observation Tower.

Stretcher Bearer
Offer medical supplies to the Medic 3 times in a single playthrough.

Here's the list of all encounters with the Medic:
  • Chapter 2. Fort Souville, B, Combat Shelter. Bring him bandage;
  • Chapter 3. The Road, Camp. Bring him alcohol;
  • Chapter 4. Support Trench, Blockhouse Desire. Bring him disinfectant bandage.

Ranks S and S+
Not Youth Any Longer
Complete the main story with an S rank on any difficulty.

Grognard
Achieve a new game S+ rank on Veteran, without checkpoints and unlimited saves (no ending 1A or 1B).

The first achievement is somewhat easy, really. But the SECOND ONE... Oh, boy, you are in for a ride. "Grongard" achievement is not for the faint of heart. But they have one thing in common: they both have requirements which are listed and explained in Dante's "How to Get S+ (And Any Other Rank)" guide. They did a phenomenal job, I simply will not be able to put the explanation into words. If you want to get these achievement, you REALLY should consult with their guide.

But I still will provide some advice for those, who will try to get the "Grognard" achievement:

  • Don't save and don't get hit in Chapter 1. If you play it perfect, you will get some advantage and room for mistakes in later chapters.
  • Heal as rarely as possible. But if you DO heal, use only morphine.
  • Save as little as possible, but DO NOT be too greedy with saves. I've lost a couple hours of progress twice by playing too risky. Find a perfect balance.
  • You ABSOLUTELY MUST get your hands on body armor. It completely nullifies health damage. And you can repair it with repairing kit, but only if it is not completely broken. Take care of your armor before it becomes useless.
  • Finish the game at least 2 or 3 times to know where to find key items and to be time-efficient.
  • Fresh Puttees will help you save a lot of time. Evasion Tactics are also recommended, since it helps you dodge in a more efficient way: less times hit ==> less heals used ==> better chances of getting S+ rank.

Conclusion
I really hope this guide will be helpful to you. If you need some more help and clarification or if you find some mistakes within my guide, please, do not be shy to leave a comment.

Good luck on your achievement hunting, Poilu!

the grenade launcher needs to be upgraded, and when exactly should the dove be released, I released it outside in the courtyard of Fort Vo, upgraded all the weapons, I only received the grenade launcher during the final battle, I still haven't gotten the achievement, is there some criterion for what difficulty to complete? and do I need to upgrade the grenade launcher that the lieutenant throws to us? because I just spent 5 hours, collected all the weapons and upgraded them completely and completed the 4th ending with an A rating on the Recruit difficulty level.

The location of the stimulators for achieving the “Unpleasant Numbness” state is incorrect.
Chapter 4. Behind the Front Line, Medical Tent Anatoly becomes available only in Chapter 5.

Otherwise, thank you for the guide.

OMG!!! I'M SO FUCKING DUMB!!! I've got S+ but i finished the whole game without any saves!! I unintentionally made this achivment even more hardcore xDDDD
corbin.bunce 18 Apr @ 6:10am
You can save for S+ rank, just can't have unlimited saves, which gives you endless ink, active
WexOR_Ru 18 Apr @ 2:44am
Wait YOU CAN SAVE for an S+ rank? I thought it says that you can's use saves for that achivment?

Well the truck is there, but the merchant is not showing up, just in the designed places
Stasyak  [author] 20 Feb @ 1:52am
Danielle V, if you are able to interact with the truck and useit to fast travel, then you should get the achievement without any problem. Can you interact with the truck north of the town at chapter 5?
Zoey 15 Feb @ 11:23am
Hey hello, I'm trying to achieve the sacred way but the merchant is not there, I almost finished the 5th chapter but no sign of the merchant in the truck, but the actual vehicle is there, am I missing something?

Hello hello there. I had a question about that "Harvest of Battle" achievement : is the "No Man's Land" map the only area where you have to kill those 25 enemies ? Cause it felt like there was not enough soldiers here, thinking that the German trenches counted towards this kill counts.
So should I stay in one place of the No Man's Land and wait for Germans to spawn ?

Hello,
Thank you for your guide; it helped me a lot.

I’d like to add some clarification about the Avid Gun Collector achievement. After fully upgrading a weapon, you can sell it if you need more cigarettes to buy gun parts. (I sold all my weapons except the Handcannon—it’s too expensive to upgrade!)

Also, I didn’t complete a game with an S+ rank before.
