JR Shikoku 6000 Series / JR四国6000系

The 6000 Series (6000系) is an EMU operated by JR Shikoku since 1996.

Manufactured for operations on the Seto-Ohashi bridge connecting Shikoku with Honshu, the 6000 series is a lightweight stainless steel vehicle bearing a strong resemblance to the 211 and 213 series. Due to the possibility of long emergency stops on the bridge without being able to let passengers disembark, trains operating across the Seto-Ohashi bridge must have toilets installed. This meant that the 121 series could not be used, and JR Shikoku had to purchase second hand 111 series vehicles from JR East. However, their age lead to frequent breakdowns and high maintenance costs, which lead to the company introducing the 6000 series as their replacement. To reduce costs, the exterior body and cab were made to be identical to the 211 series, while much of the electrical equipment is shared with other types owned by the company. In consideration of the high number of unmanned stations in Shikoku, there is a conductor's corner behind the driving cab. While JR Shikoku had intended to order a number of 6000 series trains, only two sets (6 cars) were ever produced due to the company's poor financial situation at the time. The type was withdrawn from services across the Seto-Ohashi Bridge in 2019, and currently runs local and rapid Sunport trains on the Yosan and Dosan lines. One Sunport round trip per day operates as a 4 car set by coupling with the 7000 series trailer car.
