How to Scout
By Mr. May
My guide is a simple Team Fortress 2 guide for the scout class. It contains simple tips and tricks. Please leave feedback because this is my first guide, but please do not say things like, "its bad" or, "you copied (person)". Please leave constructive criticism so I create better guides in the future. And finally, if you have read through this rediculously long description, thank you, and (hopefully) enjoy.

Before you read my guide...
Please know that I do not play Team Fortress 2 professionally. I am just someone who felt that they knew scout well enough to make a guide on it for newer players. So without further ado, enjoy my guide. Thank you!
The Basics
If you have ever played TF2 before, you should very well know this by now. The scout is fast. He has medium to long range weapons and a very fast melee attack speed. All of these things make scout one of my favorite classes in the game. Yet I sadly see so many scouts trying to shoot snipers halfway across the map with their scatterguns, and running at pyros, trying to mow them down with a bat. This secton is for the beginner scouts. People who are still getting the hang of the game. The scout is offensive for a reason. He is fast, and has a very important role on the battlefield. He can capture objectives faster. This is one of the most important things to note. But I will not get into that since it is pretty straight forward.
Weapons
The scout as tons of amazing weapons. However, there is already a guide on scout weapons, so I am going to stick with the stock scattergun, pistol, and bat. As I said earlier, I see too many scouts shooting at snipers halfway across the map. It is a shotgun. It is really only effective at close range. If you really want that sniper dead, use your pistol. It fires faster, and is more accurate. The pistol should only be used at medium to long range. So I have explained the properties of the pistol and scattergun, so now we move on to the bat. The bat is a weapon that, while is very powerful, should only be used as a last resort against, and I can not stress this enough, certain classes. Like a said earlier, I see so many scouts rushing down pyros with their bats. To a pyro, and I speak from experience, the second you see that scout rushing you down, they already see you on the ground burnt to a crisp. Do not rush down pyros! This is one of the classes you should avoid trying to kill with your bat! Just run away, and look for some ammo. A demoman would be an easy target for your bat. He has projectiles, and if you can dodge then, he'll have his head bashed in within seconds. A medic is a good class to rush with your bat, especially if he's using the Crusader's Corssbow. But don't forget to watch out who the medic is healing. If it is a soldier, heavy, or pyro, DO NOT RUSH HIM! Even if you do get the medic, your victory will not feel quite as satisfying if you get mowed down with a minigun, blown up, or cooked to perfection. Every class except heavy, soldier, and pyro, (and engineer, unless he has a sentry on the hunt for anybody in its path) you can most likely kill with your bat.
Movement
The scout can double jump. He is fast, as I have said many times. This is what makes him so annoying. However, these are countered by his lower health. With a mere 125 Health, the scout is quite easy to kill. That is why you have to be able to avoid incoming damage. Your double jump can get you to greater hights. This can be used as an escape route as well as offensively and defensively. For example, you get a spy's attention. You are a threat to him because of your damage output and speed. It is very hard for him to backstab you, therefore you can kill him easily. For example, you are out of ammo (unlikely but, just for the example) and you only have your bat. However, there is a pyro guarding him, as well as a soldier (again, unlikely. This spy is not the president, but for the sake of the example). There is a higher ledge. You can use your double jump to get up there. The other classes can't double jump. Therefore, you have an easy escape route (possibly) right to an ammo pack so you can get right back in the battle.
Thanks For Reading My Guide!
Thank you very much if you have indured this very long, and possibly very pointless guide. Again, it is my first guide, so if I could get some constructive criticism that would be great. This was a guide for beginners, but if you want one, I can make a guide for more advanced players. So thank you, and hopefuly there will be more guides to come!

Thank you! I will try to do all of these things very soon!

Just noticed that you said it's a guide for beginners. If you could do one for more advanced players, that would be great. Also, another idea for a guide that I could definitely use is how to strafe effectively.
Thanks and great job!

Your guide is well written and informative. Unfortunately, it was not exactly what I needed, but that's my problem, not yours. I only have one thing that I would disagree with, and that is that it is a long and pointless guide. It is actually about a perfect length, and you could make it much longer, and it would still be fine. And as for pointless, it really is not. It is a great guide that has the potential to really help players improve, so long as they actually listen to what you say.

This is more of a request than constructive criticism, but I would love it if you added more about more specific strategies to fight certain classes, or how to stay alive in the heat of the battle, or stuff like that. I always find that I can't seem to hit scouts, but when I play as scout, I can't avoid getting hit. I know that practice has a lot to do with that, but a guide would definitely help.

There's a lot of tricks to scout, most based to player preference. I, for one, kill heavies with a simple circle-strafe and three-four shots with the scattergun at point blank range kills him.

Stock scattergun is best, end of story.

As for this guide, it would have been nice to overview the class matchups with scout against the other 9 classes (including his own class), and to compare the strengths and weaknesses of the weapons.

Also, please try to space out your paragraphs, this felt like a massive wall of text. Some video evidence as inspiration of how to be a good scout (For example, [extv] Lucky Luke).

I actually found it very helpful, having wanted to improve at scout. I haven't tried to kill a sniper from halfway across with the scattergun, but I will admit I've tried to kill a heavy and a pyro with a bat. Let's just say... I lost.
This is all good advice, keep up the good work!
