Tobu 50000 Series / 東武50000系

The 50000 Series (50000系) is a commuter EMU operated by Tobu Railway since 2005.

Developed as a next generation commuter train for the Tobu network, the 50000 series is the first aluminium bodied train to be produced by the company. The series aimed to improve environmental friendliness and accessibility, as well as lowering energy usage. The double-skinned aluminium structure is based on Hitachi's A-train design, with modular construction methods and standardised materials to ensure ease of future recycling. There are 4 subvariants within this series, the 50000, 50050, 50070 and 50090 types. The base 50000 variant is used for above ground operations on the Tojo Line. 50050 series trains have a narrower body for direct operations from the Nikko Line/ Isesaki Line to Tokyo Metro Hanzonmon Line and Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line. For through running between the Tojo Line and Tokyo Metro's Yurakucho and Fuku-toshin Lines, the 50070 series was developed from the 50050s. Lastly, the 50090 series were manufactured for the reserved seating TJ Liner services on the Tojo Line, these cars are fitted with rotating cross seats, which can be turned 90 degrees to form a long seating arrangement instead. Therefore they can also be used on regular trains in long seating mode, in addition to TJ Liner in cross seating mode. The total number of cars produced is 400, all of which are arranged in 10-car trains. This type is commonly seen on the Tobu network on longer-distance runs, especially for Tojo Line operations.
