Introduction
Upon starting the game, you will be faced with a little "quiz" that will determine which of the four protagonists you are going to play as: Urpina, Taria, Leonard or Balmaint. The results of the quiz may also change your protagonist's stat bonuses, penalties and favored element a bit, the same character may have different stats distribution depending on your answers.

Of course, if you are unhappy with your choice, you can simply press back on the results screen and choose the protagonist you want directly at will. However, you will get the default version of the chosen protagonist without the aforementioned bonus and penalty.

There is nothing particularly wrong with the default stats, but if you are a min-maxer and aim to get the best stat distribution possible for a specific purpose or just want to know how the quiz works, then read on.

The protagonist's default stats, which is used when you directly select a protagonist or when you recruit them in another character's story, is as follows:

Protagonist Stats - Variations
Depending on your choices at the comet quiz, the protagonist's stats may change to another variation. Each variation is associated with a constellation (of the Celestials and Old Gods). Upon starting a new game for the first time, there are 8 possible variations that you can get, with each character getting two variations from the quiz.

The table below will list those 8 variations and the differences from the default stat.

Each completed playthrough will add one additional variation to the list. The added variation will always be the same regardless of which protagonist you chose for the previous playthrough, so the first variation that gets added after 1 completed playthrough will always be Diemazu for Balmaint regardless of whether your first run was with Balmaint or Urpina or the other two.

The list of the additional variations are as follows, with "Completed" being the number of completed playthrough(s) required to unlock it.

How the Comet Quiz Works
How It Works

The comet quiz is comprised of 7 different questions, with each containing two possible answers. Each answer corresponds to a constellation listed above.

1. When you pick an option, one of the two options of the next question will be associated with the constellation you picked previously, and the constellation you did not choose will not show up again in the quiz.
For instance, the first question on a fresh game is:
The emperor's coastal vanguard has set sail. What draws your eye? - (Kada) Its well-equipped medical chamber. - (Tejedura) Its beautiful figurehead.
Picking the first option associated with Kada will give you the second question:
It's the night before an important competition, and your leg has cramped up from practicing too hard. What do you do? - (Macha) Administer treatment and compete. - (Kada) Give up on the match and rest.
As you can see, one of the two options of the next question is still associated with Kada, and it will keep appearing as long as you keep selecting it. At the same time, since you didn't pick Tejedura option for the first round, you will not get a question that will have a Tejedura option again in the remaining questions. If you choose Kada again then there won't be another Macha option either.

2. The final question will determine which constellation & protagonist variation you will get.
It doesn't matter if the first 6 questions you are all in on Macha if on the 7th you pick the Marigan one, you will get Urpina - Marigan as the results. Similarly, if you picked different constellations on the first 6 questions then picked Shaams for the 7th then the result will show Balmaint - Shaams.

From this, it can be seen that the purpose of the first 6 questions is to eliminate the constellations that you don't want.

3. The order constellations appears in the quiz is fixed for a given number of completed playthroughs.
For instance, the constellation order from a fresh playthrough is:
Tejedura - Kada - Macha - Shaams - Astel - Adamas - Imhokiel - Marigan
For the first question, you will get the first pair, Tejedura and Kada. Regardless of what you choose earilier, Macha will be the "opponent" for the 2nd question. Similarly, whoever got picked for the second question will go up against Shaams for the third.
For this one, this order does not change for a given number of playthroughs completed, as in whether you press New Game or load a cleared file this order will be the same. This number is saved separately from your actual save files.

4. The order constellations appears in the quiz changes with the number of completed playthrough.
Pretty easy to guess this given how (3) is worded.
For example, when you press "New Game" in the title screen, the order if you completed 2 playthroughs will be:
Tejedura - Adamas - Macha - Marigan - Kada - Astel - Imhokiel - Shaams
"Wait, but what about the newly unlocked constellations? Why is it still these 8?" you may ask.

5. If loading from a clear file, the constellation of all previous runs recorded in that clear file will be replaced with new ones in the order described in the Variations section's 2nd table.
Let's reuse the 2-playthrough order since it's most accessible at the time of writing this.
Tejedura - Adamas - Macha - Marigan - Kada - Astel - Imhokiel - Shaams
My first run was with Urpina-Marigan, and my second is Taria-Macha. Upon loading the Urpina clear file and choose to do the quiz again, the order is now:
Tejedura - Adamas - Macha - Diemazu - Kada - Astel - Imhokiel - Shaams
Notice how Marigan is now replaced by Diemazu, the first in the list of new constellations. Upon loading the Taria clear file:
Tejedura - Adamas - Bartlett - Diemazu - Kada - Astel - Imhokiel - Shaams
Once again, Macha which was used in the previous playthrough is no longer available and is now replaced by the next variation in the list, Bartlett.
Replacements only start appearing when loading cleared files, and pressing "New Game" will only offer the initial 8 gods without considering your selection of which protagonist stories you completed upon pressing NG.



Implications
The ordering of constellation appearances will affect the difficulty of getting a specific constellation or character.
Assume that you are picking the answers randomly and are not trying to be consistent with the theme of a constellation. Given the initial order:
Tejedura - Kada - Macha - Shaams - Astel - Adamas - Imhokiel - Marigan
Due to how the comet works, the 7th, decisive question will always have a Marigan choice regardless of the road you took to get there, meaning that overall there is at least 50% chance of getting Urpina. I said "at least" because Adamas is also an Urpina constellation so the actual chance of getting her is even higher. (62.5% if I'm correct).
Meanwhile, to get Taria, you would have to pick Tejedura or Macha repeatedly from the very beginning, and it's possible to eliminate both Taria options completely by the 3rd question. Similar with Balmaint.
It is through this that they can bias the quiz towards certain protagonists for a given number of playthroughs. For your first, it's Urpina; for the third, it's Balmaint.

You can't get the same protagonist with the same constellation again for a cleared file.
Due to (5), if the first run you did Urpina - Marigan then on the second if you still want Urpina you have to play with either the default stats or the Adamas one.

I expect that it would cycle again on your 9th playthrough, but the order the old constellation reappears is currently unknown and I don't know if I'm going to play the game 9 times or more to find out.

It may get temporary harder or even impossible to get the same protagonist as your previous run again through the comet.
The shuffling is one thing, but taking out one constellation completely to replace with another of a different character would definitely affect the chance of getting a specific protagonist. If your first 2-3 runs are all the same protagonist then their constellations get taken out of the comet entirely, forcing you to manually pick them.

It won't last forever though as the new constellations cycle through 4 characters, so they are bound to appear back eventually.
