Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller served as Governor of New York from 1959 to 1973 and Vice President from 1974 to 1977. He was infamous for leading the Eastern Establishment Republicans, later known as Rockefeller Republicans, a group known for advocating economic responsibility and social progressivism. It consisted of Northern and Midwestern liberals. Rockefeller supported universal healthcare, considering it a human right. He also promoted a balanced approach between labor and business, while being more supportive of unions.

Rockefeller ran three times under the Eastern Establishment banner: first in 1960, then in 1964, and again in 1968. In 1964, he came close to securing the nomination until conservative Barry Goldwater gained prominence, transforming the Republican Party and marginalizing Northeastern liberals. Today, Rockefeller is remembered as a quintessential liberal Republican, and is a reminder of what the GOP once was years ago.
