I made this guide for anyone who wants to do a historical playthrough. I have the sources listed in its own section at the end if you want to look at them. I tried to stay as historical as possible but if you find anything wrong or have a source with credible information, just post a comment with a link and i'll check it out.

I tried to keep as close to historical naming and assignments. There will be some units listed in the Units of____ sections but not in the order of battle because for some reason they had not been assigned to an army or did not participate in a battle that the army they were assigned to participated in. All lot of units were disbanded and later reorganized, specially between 1775-1777. This led to different regiments having the same designation at different times. I'll try to make it easier to follow the units lineage by noting their previous designation and if they changed designations during whatever year. Militia units are not listed because there were hundreds organized throughout the war, so are only mentioned as militia in the order of battle.

If you only care about the order of battles they are listed here in the same order they are in each section.

Cavalry
First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry
  • The units was a volunteer-only, privately funded unit. It was comprised of local social organizations in the Philadelphia area. The organization is similar to The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1775, the unit performed non-combat and bodyguard duties for George Washington. I do not think the unit was every adopted into the Continental Army, but I included it because aside from militia, it was the only cavalry unit operating with the continental army in 1775.
Order of Battle
The Continental Army in 1775 almost exclusively operated around the New England and upstate NY/Canada region. The Eastern Department was the main army and participated in the Campaign of Boston in 1775. The Department of New York or Northern Department participated in the Invasion of Canada Campaign from 1775-1776. The order of battle was created using a snapshot of the departments during their respective campaigns. The order of battle is more of a general look at the organization of the army during the campaign.

Department of New York, Invasion of Canada, Battle of Quebec, December 1775
* I am not exactly sure what Montgomery's units were, after capturing Montreal, he left a small force to guard the city. None of the sources listed what regiments were left to garrison. Also Arnold organized his units into 3 brigades, of which I can only confirm Morgan's Rifles was 1 brigade. I assume the two Rifle Companies were 1 brigade, and the 2 provisional battalions were another.

I do not know if this was a small militia type unit of cavalry or an adopted unit in the Continental Army. I can only find information on one engagement detailing a Bloodsworth commanding a cavalry unit. The unit also does not appear in any other report in the document so I am not sure what to do with it.
Order of Battle
1776 was a large reorganization year for the Continental Army. Many units were reorganized into continental units or consolidated with other regiments. With the recent failure of the Invasion of Canada, Washington would transfer regiments between departments almost on a monthly basis. I choose to use snapshots of the departments during the major campaigns as a general order of battle.

The headings are formatted as: Department, Campaign, Battle/s, Time Frame of Snapshot

Department of Canada, Invasion of Canada, Battle of the Ceders/Retreat from Ticonderoga, May - June 1776
* - The units listed were part of the Department of Canada but did not participate in the Battle of the Ceders. The units were spread across the upstate NY and southern Canada regions. The only regiment listed that participated in the Battle of the Ceders is Bedel's Regiment. All units did participate in the retreat from Ticonderoga in June of 1776.

Third reorganization after the next one-year enlisted was over. 1777 was the first year the Continental Congress did the 3-year or end of the war enlistment. So many units would be reorganized in 1781 after the 3-year enlistment was over. Had to split up the section because of the word limit.

This Order of Battle is from July 22. Between the 22-27 Washington would form and send 4 detachments of men ahead of the main army. These detachments, Scott's Brigade, and Varnum's Brigade would form Charles Lee's Vanguard force and engage the british on July 28. Woodford's Brigade would be transferred to Nathanael Greene.

Commander-In-Chief George Washington

State Lines
A state line referred to the regiments of a state quota. Throughout the war, the Continental Congress gave each state a quota of regiments to maintain. States had the authorization to organize additional regiments that would be considered part of the state line. At the end of 1779, the 3 year enlisted soldiers ended. The Continental Congress ordered another reorganization of the army. Dropping the required number of regiments to 50.

I can certainly do that. Almost all 1775 units were created soon after the Battle of Lexington/Concord in May-June, 1775. There were a second, smaller batch of units created after the Battle of Bunker Hill in July-September, 1775 to reinforce Washington's Army. I may not add those formed dates in the next update, depending on long the 1777-17780 sections take.

This may be waaaay to much of an ask but it would be awesome to have a "formed date" for the 1775 units so that I could create the unit in-game around the same time historically they would have been created and joined the army/department!
