Prepare to test the chest by standing near the chest, with a weapon of your choice
The Test
Hit the chest with your weapon from step 1. If it attacks you, it's not a real chest - fight it to the death. If it does nothing, you can safely open it
Epilogue
Pick up your loot, and you're done.

You have successfully learned to operate a piece of furniture without being killed.
