Dengfeng Observatory (World Wonder)

The construction of the Dengfeng Observatory began in 1276 under the supervision of Guo Shoujing, a prominent astronomer (also a mathematician and hydrologist). The observatory has a square base and is shaped like an overturned dipper. A stone rail extends from the observatory terrace, built to measure the length of shade cast from the sun. Under the reign of Kublai Khan, Guo Shoujing and his colleagues headed to Dengfeng Observatory and other observation points throughout the country, using astonomical instruments (some invented or improved by Guo Shoujing himself) to observe the movement of celestial bodies and the subtle differences in time of days. Utilizing the vast amount of astronomical observation data, Guo Shoujing compiled the Season-granting Calender and gave the length of 365.2425 days, more closely approximating the 365.2422 days of an actual solar year, with an accuracy equal to that of the Gregorian calendar issued three centuries later.
