Body Armor/Garment Classification System
"Gray Zone Warfare uses the body armor classification system established by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). This system is internationally recognized for evaluating the performance and effectiveness of ballistic protective equipment."
Protection Levels
The NIJ body armor protection levels are classified as follows, from the least to the most effective:

  • Level I
  • Level I+
  • Level IIA
  • Level IIA+
  • Level II
  • Level II+
  • Level IIIA
  • Level IIIA+
  • Level III
  • Level III+
  • Level IV
  • Level IV+

Level IIA:
Protection against .9mm FMJ RN bullets fired at a velocity of 373 m/s and .40 S&W FMJ bullets fired at a velocity of 352 m/s.

Level II:
Protection against .9mm FMJ RN bullets fired at a velocity of 398 m/s and .357 Magnum JSP bullets fired at a velocity of 436 m/s.

Level IIIA:
Protection against .357 SIG FMJ FN bullets fired at a velocity of 448 m/s and .44 Magnum SJHP bullets fired at a velocity of 436 m/s.

Level III:
Protection against 7.62mm FMJ rifle bullets fired at a velocity of 847 m/s.

### Level IV:
Protection against .30-06 M2 AP rifle armor-piercing bullets fired at a velocity of 878 m/s.
Interpretation of Symbols and Levels
  • Plus Symbol (+):
The "+" symbol indicates that the vest has additional enhancements compared to the standard level. For example, a vest rated IIA+ offers greater protection than a standard IIA, but less than a standard Level II.

  • Letter A:
The letter "A" after a level (e.g., IIA) means that this level is lower than the next higher numerical level without the "A". So, a Level IIA vest provides less protection than a Level II vest.
Examples of Application
  • level IIA+ vest provides additional protection compared to a standard level IIA vest but does not surpass a level II vest.

  • level IV vest is designed to stop high-powered armor-piercing projectiles, offering the highest protection available according to NIJ classification.
Protection Zones
When inspecting a vest or body armor, you can see which areas are protected, indicated at the top left of the vest. Common protection zones include:

  • Front
  • Back
  • Sides
Conclusion
The NIJ classification system is essential for understanding and selecting protective equipment suited to various ballistic threats. When choosing a vest/body armor, it is crucial to consider both the protection level and any potential upgrades (indicated by "+") to ensure optimal safety in conflict or threat situations
