Introduction

Kaze and the Wild Masks is a 2D platformer that takes you through the crystal islands on a quest to save your friend Hogo and free the island inhabitants from an ancient curse.

This guide aims to provide some useful info about the various enemies and items.
Controls
This tiny section covers the basic controls of the game and assumes you are using the default keyboard layout. Controllers are supported, and keys can be re-mapped in the options menu.

The arrow keys move you in the direction you want to go.

The C key is used to jump.

The X key will perform a spin attack. You can also hold X to glide in the air or ride an updraft.

You can perform an air smash by holding down in the air and pressing the X key. This is useful when needing to descend quickly and works as an alternative attack.

Kaze can perform a pseudo-double jump by spin attacking off a ledge, and pressing the jump key while still spinning. This is useful for clearing large gaps.
Characters
Kaze and Hogo
Kaze (left) is the main character of the game. She is a rabbit that can glide in the air using her ears or perform a spin attack. She is accompanied to a floating temple by her friend Hogo in search of a magic ring.

Hogo (right) becomes cursed after the spirit inside the ancient ring attacks and unleashes chaos on the crystal islands nearby, transforming many common vegetables into an army that terrorizes the inhabitants.

Gaia
Later met in the first crystal island after restoring peace, she offers help to Kaze. Gaia has an airship that is used to travel between the crystal islands, and when you are stuck in a level, she can fly you to the next one. She also provides extra checkpoints in levels when playing on easy mode.
Collectables
There are many collectibles scattered around the crystal islands for you to find. This section provides some notes on each one.

Small red crystal
The most common and worth 1 crystal when collected. You need to gather 100 of these in each stage for one of the objectives.

Large red crystal
This large gem is worth 10 crystals when collected and is harder to find.

Crystal heart
This crystal heart recharges Hogo's power to shield you from a single hit or two hits if playing on easy mode. It grants you five red crystals if you have a full shield.

Letter Cards
There are four letter cards in most levels of the game, and collecting them all rewards you with an album page.

Emerald (left half)
The left half of the emerald is usually found in the first bonus stage of the level. You need both halves to make a whole emerald.

Emerald (right half)
The right half of the emerald is usually found in the second bonus stage of the level. You need both halves to make a whole emerald.

Small green crystal
This crystal is only found in bonus stages, where various amounts are required to complete the challenge.

Stop Watch
Collecting the stop watch will begin time trial mode. This pickup only appears at the start of a level that you've already cleared.

Fireflies
These little bugs can be found on various things. Attack them to get small red crystals.

Vases
These contain collectibles and can be broken by throwing them at enemies or projectiles.

Red Vase
Break it open to get a crystal heart!

Yellow Vase
Break it open to get a letter card!

Purple Vase
Break it open to get 10 small red crystals!
Checkpoints
Idol Statue
Touch a checkpoint idol to activate it. You are returned to the nearest checkpoint when you fall off a level or take damage without a shield. Any letter cards and red crystals you collected before touching the idol are kept.

Mask altars also count as checkpoints.

Gaia platform
When playing on easy mode, Gaia will provide extra checkpoints for you. These only appear after failing the level.
Portals
Bonus stage portal
There are two of these in most levels, and each one has a challenge to clear in return for an emerald piece.

Goal portal
Usually located near the end of every level, Touch it to clear the level and be shown the results screen.
Mask Altars
Kaze will come across 4 different masks on her journey across the crystal islands. Each mask will grant you a new ability while wearing it, and each mask altar also serves as a checkpoint.

Shark
This mask gives you the power to dive and move underwater faster. You can perform a spin attack underwater that propels you in the direction you're currently moving. You can also hold the C key to swim faster.

Eagle
This mask allows you to fly through the air by flapping your ears with the jump button. Pressing the attack key will throw a projectile in an arc, which will also stall you in the air for a brief moment.

Tiger
The tiger mask will give you the ability to climb walls using the jump button and gives you a horizontal dash attack.

Lizard
This mask is the most unique and changes the gameplay into an auto-runner. Kaze becomes enraged and their normal attack move is now a quick dive. You can also double jump.
Enemies
There are many different enemies all over the crystal islands. Some are more dangerous than others, and below are field notes about each one.

Bean Pod
This is a smaller enemy that can glide in the air and also float on the surface of water. These enemies will always run to the end of a ledge and jump off, floating on their way down.

Carrot
Easily defeated on all sides and moves slowly.

Eggplant
This enemy leaps up in the air and can be used to gain extra height from a jump.

Castor Bean
A spiky ball enemy that is usually stuck in place or moving on a set path. This enemy can be defeated by throwing a vase at it.

Tomato Bazooka
This enemy shoots flaming carrots at you with a rocket launcher. Dodge it's attacks and defeat it from any side or by jumping on its head.

Corn
Chomps it's way back and forth and cannot be defeated from the front. Jump on top or attack it from behind.

Pineapple
A crab-like enemy that quickly moves from side to side. Cannot be defeated. This enemy can be put to sleep with a light switch.

Dragon Fruit
A hedgehog-like creature that can only be defeated from the front.

Beet
This enemy hovers in place and is often used to get across gaps in a level. Sometimes wears a helmet to protect its head.

Ostra
This cactus-like enemy shoots petals and comes in a variety of formations. It cannot be defeated and is most commonly in groups.

Sledding carrot
This enemy comes out of an igloo and is quite fast. They always respawn, so not worth defeating most of the time.

Flaming Pumpkin
A large enemy that moves on a set path and is often in packs. Cannot be defeated and requires tricky movement to avoid.

Cucumber
A strange enemy that can be found on land or in water usually acts as a barrier. Easily defeated from the sides.

Star Fruit
A fast-moving enemy that spins rapidly. Moves in a set pattern and is tricky to avoid. Cannot be defeated.

Piranha
A very dangerous enemy that cannot be defeated and travels through walls. It can be put to sleep or also angered using a light switch. It's best to move quickly and avoid it.

Onion
These little things leap out of the ground to surprise attack you. Watch out for it's quick movement and defeat it with a jump attack.

Banana Cannon
Shoots bananas like a torpedo; they can be stood on top of but cannot be defeated. The bananas it shoots can be defeated by jumping on their head.

Watermelon
A wide enemy that is bulky and has a shield covering its body. It will use its shield to bounce you backwards. Attack it from behind to defeat it.

Mini Walkthrough
A walk-through of the first level in the game and the boss waiting for you at the end of the island. Great for new players.

After being launched out of the palace, our friend Hogo protects us from harm with a magic shield. We begin on the first level, Cranky Carrots 1-1.

From the start of the level, you can head left to find a large, hidden red crystal. This crystal will give us 10 small red crystals. Let's try to find at least 100 of these before the end of the level.

Heading to the right, you'll come across a log full of small red crystals and a large crystal just above it. Keep going to the right, and you'll see fireflies near a small bush. Press X to spin attack the fireflies to be rewarded with more small red crystals, bringing our total up to 41!

Our first enemy will be the bean pod, this enemy is easy enough to defeat. Either jump on it's head or use a spin attack to dispatch it.

After the bean pod, you'll come across a bridge with a red crystal heart. Ahead, there will be a few more bean pod enemies; keep going, and you'll find a carrot enemy. Like the bean pod, a spin attack or jumping on its head will defeat it.

Up on a ledge, there will be our first letter card, the letter 'K'. There are three more to collect in this level; we'll get all four by the end.

Keep your eye out for red crystals as you make your way up to the second letter card, 'A'. After collecting the 'A' letter card, instead of heading further right, jump up on the small platforms on the trees to reach our first bonus stage portal.

In this bonus stage, we have to collect all the small green crystals within the time limit. You will then get your first piece of this stage's emerald!

Continue forward in the level, and you'll reach your first checkpoint. You will be returned here if you fall off the stage or take damage without a shield.

After defeating the carrots and bean pods, you'll find the 'Z' letter card under a small ledge. Continue along, and on the lower route, you'll come across the second bonus stage portal.

This one requires us to defeat the number of enemies in the stage to be rewarded with our second half of the emerald, completing it!

Next, you'll come across a large hill. Sliding down the hill will have the fourth and final letter card, 'E', and by now we should have at least 100 red crystals! After collecting the 'E' card, make your way to the end of the level and jump into the large pink portal.

You'll be shown the results screen for the level; afterwards, on the world map, continue on to the second level.

As you progress, each level will introduce new enemies and mechanics. Collecting all the emeralds on an island will also unlock a bonus level, at the end of the island is our first boss fight.
End of Stage Results Screen
After clearing a level, you will be shown the results screen. Most levels have three main objectives to complete. These are collecting all letter cards (yellow), collecting both emerald halves from the bonus stages (green), and lastly, finding at least 100 red crystals in the level. You don't need to collect all the level cards or both emerald pieces in a single attempt, but you do need to find at least 100 red crystals before touching the goal of a level.

Every level features a bonus objective for clearing the level without taking any hits.
A gold crown will be shown on the results screen and added to the level select screen.
Time Trial Mode
To start time trial mode, collect the stop watch that is at the beginning of a level you previously cleared. All other collectibles are then removed from the level, and you are given a full shield. Make it to the goal portal as fast as possible for a medal.

After receiving a medal, you can also open the leaderboard to see how well you did against others.

Boss Guide - Mother Mona
Waiting for you at the end of the island will be Mother Mona. Their fight will start off with Mona shooting thorns at you from the top right corner.

They will then sweep side to side, raining spikes down on you. Mona will start sending out small castor beans from the base of the trees on the left and right; watch for the blue glow for which side the castor beans are going to come from!

Mona will then shoot spikes towards your left and right to force you into the middle. She will then drop to the ground and crash. Now's your chance! Watch out for the fire coming from them and climb your way up on the newly extended platforms on the left or right and do a dive attack or jump onto the gem on their forehead!

Once hit, Mother Mona will become angrier and drop a crystal heart if playing on easy mode. Their attacks will become faster and have slight variations. Continue to dodge their spikes and jump onto the gem on their forehead two more times to defeat them!

Once defeated, you've rescued the inhabitants of the first island. You are thanked by Gaia, who will now take you to the second island to continue your adventure!
In closing

You should now be familiar with the basics of the game and have defeated the first boss. You can refer back to the information in this guide if you need it in the future; perhaps you can change the fate of Hogo along the way. Thanks for reading, good luck!
